Wasn't that exactly how Lexus broke into the luxury market? By starting with near-luxury offerings that were reasonably priced?

Lexus DID NOT offer a better product back in 1989. Man the BS here, as bimmermike will say is "REAL THICK"

You German fans have short memories. DO you know what BMW was putting out in 1989? Do you remember the slow, over-priced yupie-mobile called the 3 series? How about the 6 series that hadnt been updated in a decade. How about the flagship 7 series wihout an 8 cylinder engine? Now let's look at Benz. 190E anyone? I had one, biggest piece of junk I ever owned. Their flagship had been around for a good 8-9 years, with engines that still used '70s technology. Audi? Did they even have a flagship...the 5000 or 100-200 class? Believe me, the 5000 was not exactly the A8 of its era, not even when a V-8 was (finally) installed. The Audi was a good, sporty car, but was not even mentioned in the same breath as BMW and Benz. It would be several more years before Audi became a serious luxury player.

Lexus came on the scene with new, areodynamic (if a bit derivative) styling; high-tech, multi-valve engines; sumptuous and ergonomicaly sound interiors. Basically their products were SUPERIOR to most German products at the time, at a lowered price.

The Hyundai can offer none of this superiority, only a low price. And that won't cut it. The bar is simply too high. Lexus raised the bar in '89. The Germans, depending on your point of view, either matched or surpassed that. And again depending on your point of view, Lexus has either matched or exceeded this new bar. Where is Hyundai? Trying to keep up with the best offerings from Toyota, Volkswagen and even Ford and Chevy.

So enough of the b.s. about Lexus quaking in their boots, or about how Hyundai is following the Lexus formula. I know it makes you feel better, but really, get a clue.

Thats one expensive hyundai, that wont retain any value.

Did you notice on the interior shot that they have an iDrive like controller. Will this be the first Korean with a nav system?

I was in Greece a week ago and I saw a hyundai sonata with navigation.

I drive? It looks JUST like the Audi MMI (multi media interface)

Interior seems designed nice, but the materials still look a bit cheap. I give it to Hyundai for making great strides...just can't overcome paying more than 30k for one though..

I don't see $30k being extremely unreasonable. When the Nissan Altima 3.5 debuted in 2002, it costed $32k fully loaded, with a trash warranty to suck even more money out of the consumer; and it didn't have anything....I think the Bose Audio system and the V6 engine were the only percs the car had. I went with my wife when she bought hers.

How many sedans can you name, in the U.S., that are RWD with 300hp, for $30k and a huge warranty. I can't think of a single one; I could be wrong though.

In fact, LG has a high-end phone dubbed the LG Prada, using a very similar touchscreen UI that came out BEFORE the iPhone did.

The Koreans are very capable of producing great tech products.

That touch screen product intergrated with google maps will be an AMAZING feature on new car navigations. I love it my iphone. Saves space and has unlimited key configuration possibilities while making the most out of that big screen.

my dad has an iphone too, but the problem is tht when he trys to unlock it, it wont go, wont unlock... its a 4gb.

I typically don't like Apple, but despite that and my previous comment, I actually do have an iPhone.

"Revolutionary?" I don't think so, but the best multimedia, user-friendly, useful and prettiest phone ever? I'd say so.

OK, I'll agree that the Koreans (Japanese, too) have terrific electronic products. I'll also say that Hyundai has come pretty far since the days of the Scoupe, but comparing a Hyundai to a BMW is just silly using today's cars as a basis.

Having said that, can you drive a Samsung or Lucky Goldstar(LG)? Yes, those cheap Goldstar products from the past are the namebrand LG now.

Hyundai is making strides, but I have yet to see or drive a sporty Hyundai - Tiburon included.

I don't know why so many people are so negative of what Hyundai is doing right now. From the looks of these pics it seems to be turning into a great car. And besides, a company like Hyundai will keep the other top dogs in line making good cars at reasonable prices so everyone benefits from this.

Hyundai is on a roll. Friends who agonized over being seen in a Hyundai finally caved in to the highly competitive price and bought one. They are totally happy with their decision. I too am not above driving a Hyundai and I want a large powerful car with RWD and LSD. The new Genesis DOHC V8 meets this requirement in spades.
