30 years of the BMW 7 Series

The only flagship luxury sedan that handles like a sports car behind the wheel, and feels like a limo in the rear. This car is truly amazing. I am hoping the 2009 750 will be more evolutionary than revolutionary.

That was 30 years ago. The Lexus LS is now the best handling car in its class.

I have a great idea for a new game:

All Lexus fanboys need to strap on a C4 vest and go for a test drive the lexus of their choice. If at any point you get passed by someone from the German camp, you simply push the button and spare the rest of the world of yourselves and the car.

David, after much toil and tribulation, I have come up with a custom solution to your psychosis. This solution is a very pin-point and exact theory that is guaranteed to work, only possible with your full support and colaboration. It has worked wonders for others in the past. Eh, it doesn't compete with the Phantom or Maybach. I don't think it handles like a sports car but the driver certainly feels more connected to the road in a 7-series than an LS for example, and whats wrong with that, its important to know what the car is up to at all points and feel confident driving it. Something that wallows and handles like a boat isn't going to inspire you with confidence when you're driving it.

Like most German cars, this one has a great and rich history. One has to respect that.

The only 'dip' in its history is when in 2001 the current 7 was launched. It's just ugly.

It wasn't that much of a dip. It made the S class look like it came from the stone age. (design and technology)

I have to admit it was revolutionary. Especially iDrive and the whole interior design has be copied by many others.

the old E38 went for USD 100K in Myanmar, now it would round to 200k+ its a great car, but I prefer other makes than the current one.

Love the old 7 series. My favorite is the E32. I remember, I was like 11 yrs old and got my first copy of Automobile Magazine, and there it was in there. I LOVED IT! I stared at it, how perfect the lines seemed then for a big sedan. I knew of huge Cadillacs and large Chevy Caprices and this was art to my eyes. I still have that magazine (1987 I think it was) in storage. ( I also remember when I was young I got a kick out of the 750iL... to me it said 75 Oil... hehe)

thats the entire point lithon--it is a sports car with luxury appeal. By your comment it sounds like you would rather drive a car that has the handling of the Titanic.

I have to agree on the reliability, but keep in mind, ALL flagship introductions have numerous issues the first 2 years. Merc, Lexus, and BMW have all had their issues, and the flagship sedans for each brand are ALWAYS the most unreliable by far.

The 7 is the only full size lux car that can handle like a sports car and still actually SELL. The Merc and especially Lexus are more numb behind the wheel, but alot of buyers are looking for a more plush ride and arent concerned with that to begin with. When the Infiniti Q45 was first launched 17 years ago, it was praised for its handling and power - although the Lexus LS killed it because it was a true full size luxury sedan...Infiniti 'dumbed' down the Q, made it bigger, softer, and more blah. The car failed.

The 7, on the other hand, was the first, and continues to be the only full size car that has a true sporting intent (other than staight line accleration). If anyone will ever come close to competing directly with the 7, it will be the 'new' Infiniti Q, which (if executed well) will compete with the 7 much like the G competes with the 3 series. ...Nissan's got some serious work cut out for them.
