Altima Hybrid Tested - Fuel Consumption is Much Higher than Advertised

Day 4:

I really enjoyed my week in the Nissan Altima Hybrid. Part of it was because of the novelty of the Hybrid technology, part of it was because it cost me next to nothing in fuel and part of it was because the car is really well put together and drives great.

The advertised fuel mileage figures on Nissan’s website are: 5.6 L/100 km (50 mpg) City and 5.9 L/100 km (48 mpg) highway, this might be a bit optimistic compared to my experience this week, but on a really good day — downhill and with a strong tailwind — you might achieve those numbers.

Sport is trying to knock Toyota by posting this - how cute!

Altima uses HSD with a Nissan 4-banger.

Toyota uses HSD - clearly, because it is Toyota's technology - with a Toyota 4-banger. Toyota's 4-banger is more efficient. If the same person who wrote this article tested the Camry Hybrid in the same way as they did the Altima, then the Camry would produce better results in the mileage department.

It was worth the try, Sport! ;)

A reason for the author's lower than expected mileage...

The record high temps mentioned in the article are not going to be a benefit to the hybrid, as the author presumes. As with any vehicle, mileage drops precipitously when an air conditioner has to be run full time, full blast. I notice this esp in city driving in my Prius, tho hardly at all on the highway.
