Toyota Corolla to get aggressive in 2009

I get that everyone is trying to get all competitive, but I hope consumers don't lose on the pricing end of things for the new aggressive cars

Funny how the sub-compact seems to set the trend for their new design language. It will sell either way - and there is absolutely no need for the carolla to have a performance oriented variant. Why can it just be what it does so well? A reliable compact that gets good gas mileage.

my thoughts exactly M35. Who the hell wants a performance oriented variant....???? That's the same as making a performance oriented Prius IMO.

Toyota needs to save $$$ by using only one engine and making it get the best MPG...BETTER than the last model not faster!

Not sure why I got deboosted...I mentioned that the carolla will always sell well, and DOES NOT NEED a performance oriented variant - why? I forgot to mention the most important reason: Scion tC ...if anything, that car needs a 200+ hp engine. No one buys a carolla to run with Civic Si's, etc., they by the tC. Isnt that why Toyota created Scion?

New Corolla will be a winner. Go TOYOTA!

Current 1.8l VVT-i Corolla here in Middle East produces 140BHP.

So a 2.4L engine with 158hp and an automatic tranny is considered a performance variant for Toyota?

Actually I think it's good that Toyota is getting back to performance oriented Corolla again.If you remember back in the late 80s they had a RWD 130HP 16 valve Coupe (I believe it was the GTS).I understand it is quite a good drift car now.Unfortunately the 2.4 is only coming with an auto transmission.

Winner in sales but will never match the Civic in performance, just like the new Accord will blow by the Camry and the TL will blow past the ES leaving them in dust. Toyota seems to have a year headstart in terms of design and performance but Honda/Acura always wins in the end.

The TL is not in the IS class, The TSX is and the base IS is no better performance wise than the 4 banger TSX. The TSX will also get a performance boost and the gap will be closed. Lexus those sell more cars without a doubt and they make fine products but their isn't no car they have that I would choose over an Acura because in the long run with Acura you get more for your money. Acura is also doing well here in the US in terms of sales too selling much better than most luxury companies.

The TL might blow by the ES but is far behind the IS. And considering the ES is meant for older folks who like soft comfortable rides and couldn't care less about performance then that doesn't say much for the TL.
But i will agree with you that the Corolla has never been a match to the Civic performance wise and i do believe the Civic outsells the Corolla. I also agree that the Camry has never been as good performance wise as the Accord.

back to the corolla --- now who will buy the $20,000 Corolla with the bigger engine, less MPG, spoiler, 17" wheels, etc......??!?!??!??!?!??!
