UK to Raise Driving Age to 18 to Minimize Casualties
Learner drivers are to be banned from taking their test until they’re 18, under new government proposals.

The plan is to allow young people to start learning at 17, but not allow them to take their test until they turn 18.

In addition to these new plans, new drivers would also adhere to a zero booze limit, preventing any “I’ll just have the one” antics.

All things considered, I think all this will really do is raise the fatality rate for the 18-20 age range. Granted maturity is a factor, but more so I believe it's the experience that comes with driving that is more a factor. Bumping the age up, just puts more novices in a different category. Perhaps a program requiring more driving time or learning before getting your license should be implemented.

I'm 17, and my Vw Lupo (tiny as it is) costs 1000 quid a year, even though I'm on my Dad's policy. In my own name, it would be a 2000 a year.

i'm 16, and im going to be 17 in a few months, and i live in the uk. the new proposals have really got me angry, because i'm passionate about cars.. if the uk government wants to crack down on the deaths of young people when driving, they should change the way the test is, make it more difficult so only the drivers with enough skill can pass it. changing the age from 17 to 18 will do nothing, because even though you're one year older, you're still very likely to still be a complete prat behind the wheel. i really hope these laws come into force after i take my test, which should be in early December.... oh yes, and just as a random side note congestion charging is rubbish.

Congestion charging is rubbish, are you in London?
I hate having to pay every time I want to see my friends in Kensington or even just go shopping in the west end.

I'm 17 in november and does this mean i have to pass before 2009?
Or as my friend has told me, do i have to book my test before 2009 even if i dont pass?
Replies will be much obliged.
