Sports car owners in London to pay $50 per day in congestion charge

UK motoring bodies are planning to raise London’s congestion charge to £25 (US$50) a day for high polluting vehicles in an effort to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions. The new charge is targeted towards vehicles that make the biggest contribution to global warming, such as large SUVs and luxury models, plus high-performance sports cars.

These cars alone account for eight percent of all the vehicles registered in London, and if the new proposal is voted in the owners of these cars would have to pay the £25 charge for traveling through certain parts of the city and they would also lose their entitlement to a residents discount. The high polluting cars are those that emit more than 225g of CO2 per km.

That is the best way to put pressure on automobile company to find new ways to reduce pullution.

I love sports cars and big motors but we still have to think about enviroment.

If sales are going down, companys will do anything to survive.

Can you imagine driving a V12 Lamborghini with 550 horepower, 0-100 km\h in 4 seconds doing only
10 liters\100 km in the city.

Car companys need pressure to achieve those kinds of goals.

Just a tax from jealous H8rs who wish they could drive an awesome sportscar to work instead of being crammed into a bus or the tube. Even if the cars had zero emmisions they would still be against it.

That's not good news. That means all Lexus cars are affected since they are very sport. Heck, a Lexus IS250 outhandles a BMW 335i.

Public transport in general is a loosing proposition, but it is good for the economy and people. Atleast the UK and its towns fund such transportation. In the state I currently live in you pay car tax every year and a registration fee, high fees for licensing and renewals. Average property tax running into thousands a year, not to mention state income tax, federal income tax(to U.S. Gov't) and Medicare(Healthcare which I'm not allowed to use because I work).
There are very few buses here, trains are limited, and not many taxis (my town lacks all three). *Don't move to Connecticut!* :-)

I doubt this fee would be raised as high though

Won't anymore, with this new system it won't be freee, it will be 16 dollars a day just like all other normal cars.

Cars emitting under 120gCO2 will be free (Most Yaris-Sized cars and under), cars over 225gCO2 will be 25 pounds (Range Rovers, S Class, LS460, performance cars) cars in between will be 8 pounds. (Everything else including all Lexus hybrids)

Interestingly BMW has planned for this, and come the X5 facelift, they will slightly modify it so the 3.0d version slips just under the higher rate.

And Nicad, the 450h sells better than the 300/430 combined.
