Unfortunately, despite the better fuel economy of diesels, the biased majority of the American population will never throw down more than $20k for a diesel "car".....the sad truth is that it will be a "cold day in hell" before BMW and Mercedes are able to make a substantial profit off of diesel cars in the U.S.

I just got back from a BMW event in Chicago and I got to drive a 535d (twin turbo diesel) and 535i back to back. I tell you what, that 535d is amazing. 282hp and 428lb-ft, it was awesome. It felt quicker to me than the 535i did, especially coming out of corners. I'd buy that car in a heartbeat. And enjoy better fuel economy than a hybrid for only $1k more than the gas version versus the $10k upcharge for the Lexus hybrid. And I get to have a real trunk that doesn't lose half it's volume to batteries.

Incidentally BMW is bringing that engine over in 2008, legal in all 50 states, in the 335d and in the X5.

This is straight from a Lexus brochure here in Germany.
-LS460 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds (slower than S500, equally fast as S450, slower than 750i but a bit faster than A8 4.2 FSI)
-LS600hybrid 0-100 km/h in 6.3 (they claim it has V12 performance .. but its slower than ALL of the competitors. And it doesn't make a nice V12/W12 growl)

Lexus hybrid: fuel economy? not really. driving pleasure? considering it has more weight and a rubbish gearbox NO. perfomance? nope

Europe doesn't need Bluetec (yet). Instead we have the E220 CDI, E280 CDI, E320 CDI and E420 CDI.
