The Audi R8 humbles a Porsche 911 and walks all over the BMW M6

EVO magazine tests the Audi R8 with the Porsche 911 C4S, Aston Martin V8 Vantage Prodrive and BMW M6.

Needless to say the Audi was the true superstar of the group.

The BMW M6 may not look all that serious in terms of its performance, but its 500 horsepower V10 can deliver thrills that will leave you wanting to run it hard everytime you drive it.

The iconic Porsche 911 this time in capable C4S form has a chassis and balance that has been perfected for over 4 decades and is the benchmark for everyday usable sports cars. Its involvement, precision, steering, agility and precision have made the M6, Aston Martin V8 Vantage and many others pail in comparison. The other cars looks like cows on ice meanwhile the Porsche 911 is a time tested and perfected machine.

The M6 and Porsche 911 C4S may be fast and the Porsche maybe the four decade long benchmark, but there was one new entrant in this group that provided a confidence aspiring, capable, intoxicating and precision filled experience that the BMW M6 could not come close to matching and even the Porsche was left in its wake.

The Audi R8 was given praise that the BMW M6 was far from achieving. Find some of the quotes below:

After just half an hour, it’s obvious the R8 isn’t tracing the usual high-performance-Audi flightpath but is heading into orbit. I’m reminded of the supercars that have hard-wired themselves into my central nervous system and downloaded a rush of sensations that linger and glow like direct sunlight on retina. A decade ago, an insane, twenty-minute blat across the North York Moors in a Porsche 959 left me tense, twitching and close to visceral meltdown. My adrenalin-drenched state had more to do with what I’d managed to get away with than achieve, but the concentrated memory will stay with me forever. I repeated the exercise a few months later in a tweaked Ferrari F40. The experience was so intense, so wild and so sharply administered, it left me with an aching neck and tingling nerve-ends for hours after.

It soon becomes clear that the R8’s baseline abilities are similarly extraordinary: its amazing stability, traction and grip, unparalleled steering accuracy and bite, its uncannily flat and disturbance-free ride. For these attributes alone it blows the reference points thus far provided by the others out of the frame. But the crucial difference between the Audi and the supercar markers we’ve driven down in – what shines through like a halogen beacon –is the sublime effortlessness of it all.

It all feeds into the overriding impression of fabulous dynamic cohesion already established by the exquisite steering feel, enormous grip, brilliantly judged damping and colossal top-end energy. The bottom line is that the R8 can corner at a quite ridiculous lick – all the time feeding back finely resolved information about the road surface to the rim of the wheel. And its transient responses are little short of phenomenal. Up in the hills it scythes through one particularly challenging series of sweeping semi-hairpins into a section of manic S-bends with frankly amazing speed and precision. It’s as extreme and addictive as you could want.

But, in the end, purity of purpose and breadth of ability win the day, and no car here – probably none under £100K – expresses the fusion more perfectly than the R8. There are faster supercars, but we can’t think of another currently in production that takes a demanding road apart with quite the surgical precision and cool-browed composure of Audi’s incandescently rapid and hugely desirable R8.

So here’s the answer. It’s one we sometimes doubted we’d ever witness, but, for the good of the supercar’s evolution, it could hardly be better. Audi humbles Porsche. A new dawn starts today.

The Porsche 911 Turbo maybe faster and even more precise, but even that true global everyday supercar icon and benchmark asks too much of the everyday commuting driver to achieve its amazing abilities. It is scary on the limits of adhesion and it doesn't have nearly the same cool and calm composed ride of the Audi R8.

The R8's essence is more of a GT than a raw supercar. It is a sports car that you could drive and live with every day, like the 911. It's more refined than the Aston and more fun than the M6. I know I would take it any day of the week.

Audi have really created an epic car in the R8. Lets hope this pushes BMW and Porsche to create even better cars.

"No load space?" The R8 can fit four golf bags if you count the space behind the front seats, which is actually usable. On the other hand, the M6's rear seats aren't usable, so the seats are wasting space, which means there's more room behind the front seats in the R8. Nobody buys an M6 for its seat count, let alone its "practicality." These cars are similarly priced, have similar performance aspirations and can be cross-shopped.

No body has the ball to go up against the LF-A. I think the only thing that will be as fast as the LF-A is the Veyron, or an F-16. Perhaps not even. The LF-A is the Best Thing Ever Made... ha ha...

The R8 really is a GT, also, it just has two seats and looks 1,000,000X better. Both can easily be driven every day, à la 911. But when you consider it, the R8 is in fact the one you'd rather have year-round- AWD. M6's rear seats are useless, which depletes that argument. Even though the 6 Series is 10 inches longer than my car, the rear seats are way smaller. Where did all the space go? The hood?

Audi DOES NOT consider it a gt, but a super car. It doesnt automatically become a gt because it has a nice interior! I tried the rear seats in the M6 and they are not useless. Small but can actually fit people. The R8 also doesnt look that much better and dont forget not everyone wants the 'look at me' look the R8 has.

So basically you are trying to tell me that the M6 and R8 are direct competitors? Meant to compete with each others?

You took my post and butchered it.

1. Audi knows it's a GT! It's marketed as a sueprcar, but they built it as a sports car you can drive every day... also known as, a GT. It's what the 911 is. They took Porsche's formula and perfected it.

2. You know the R8 is way, way, way better-looking than the M6. And to say the M6 doesn't say "look-at-me" is ridiculous. It's a huge BMW coupe with giant intakes and "V10" badging- let alone those ultra-thin tires on polished 19" rims. MY car is a sleeper, definitely. But the M6? Hardly. I wouldn't buy that car to blend in. But nobody buys the R8 for that either. Whoever doesn't like the way the R8 looks should be shot.

I have to agree with some here that having the M6 in the comparison is wrong since it is a 4-seater GT. R8 is nice though, but I would take the Aston.

Forget the BMW M6 then. Is the Porsche 911 C4S not a true sports cars.

The Audi R8 is for REAL.

I selectively went after the M6 to make sure amazinBimmer gets the point and so I can wait for another completely off-topic, nothing to do with cars response from him.

Never said the Audi R8 is not for real. I think it is a great car, but come on comparing it to a car that outweighs it by 500 to 700 lbs and that is about 12" to 15" longer ... How bout a school bus vs. G55 by Mercedes? That is how ridiculous this article is ... The Porsche 911 C4s is a sports car, a more refined one. If I was going to compare like performance and price cars, then why not the Porsche Turbo or the GT3 to the Audi?

C'mon, bmw4ever, you know the C4S can be WAY more expensive than the R8 if you option it up. Porsche has NOTHING standard. A comparably equipped C4S (which I built online) runs you $113K, which is right in the middle of the manual and R-tronic R8 prices.

GermanNut you're wasting your time, you'll never get through to him, he's brainwashed.

BTW S4 aside from the fact the R8 can be driven on a regular occasion & not just the weekend, it still fits more definitions of a super car rather than a GT.

The M6's backseats are not useless, if you're under 6 feet I'd even go as far as saying you may find them comfortable. I had 3-people in my 650 not to long ago & the person sitting in the backseat (About 5'10 in height) said the seats & car are really comfortable.

Also the M6 is quicker than the R8 to everything but 60MPH, the M5 as well.

Fact remains, in a real world street race, the M6 is faster. No one races thru a winding road normally, and when an R8 pulls up to you on the highway, I think the M6 would pull away. Keep in mind that I'm not defending the M6, I would choose the R8 myself, but simply pointing out some food for thought.

The M6 is not clearly faster in this case. Although the manufacturer estimates make the R8 out to be slower, its quickest time has been recorded at 3.9 seconds from 0-60mph. The M6 has never achieved a time under four.

The R8 can only beat the M6 till 60mph, but then, bye bye R8! This is because the R8 weighs WAY less than the M6, which is a GT CRUISER AND THE R8 IS NOT.

I'm not debating which car has the fastest 0-60, of course the R8 with AWD(btw, where did you see a 3.9 0-60?). I'm saying that the most common street race is on the highway or on a street where your already traveling at some speed. At this point, the M6 would surely pull away from the R8, that high reving V10 works better at its top end.

Evil, I'll ask again, which Sub. or Mits. is faster than the M6? I didn't say I thought straightline speed was the only thiung important, I just stated that some people do.

Okay, then we'll wait for the R8 V10 to be faster than the M6. But I wouldn't be wanting for speed with the "lowly" 4.2.

I have read so many reviews of the R8 that I have no clue which one I got the 3.9 time. But it was from one of the American magazines, I think. I don't make things like this up.

The results of this article is in the eyes of the beholder. You can get anything from this article.

Of course the R8 is fast, because its Audi's top of the line sports car so far. (btw, the R8 is in no way a Grand tourer by its common definition).

Top of the line Audi Sports Car v.
Top of the line BMW Grand Tourer v.
Mid-trimmed 911 Sports Car.

Gee... Thats a tough one...

Title is very misleading and opinionated...

The R8 won't be top-of-the-line for long. This will be the "base" trim when the V10 version comes out, and even possibly a V10 TDI.

As for the C4S. No, it's not the flagship Porsche, but it's good enough to merit its inclusion in this article.

M6? I would say the huge engine makes up for its size. Of course, it's noticeable in the twisties, but as others have said, it's faster in a straight line.

The correct car for this compare should be M3 and even that will have some problems due it is a 2+2 coupe. You can not compare M6 against CL65: The Bimmer will be more agile due MB is a lot heavier, Then in the Autobhan the M6 will see the Benz in the horizon geting away from him, but as soon as it have to turn, the car with less weight will gain ground again. almost the Same here in this compare.

And that's happen with most of the cars that try against any AMG in the Autobhan (even Porsche, Lambos or Ferraris will have a hard time). But try an M3 in a twisty muntain and the Merc will stay behind. R8 is great but i think on Straight line, M6 Will kick his but in the same way as an CL65 Will kick the M6.

Not quite. The difference isn't dramatic- nor is it in the CL65 vs. M6. Mercedes-Benz quotes the CL65's 0-60mph time at 4.2 seconds, which is about what most magazines get for the M6.

On a public road with two rich guys who are average drivers, the R8 and M6 would be very evenly-matched. But if I was behind the wheel of the R8, I'd probably destroy the other guy, LOL.

Regardless of how the R8 compares against other specific cars, it stands on its own as being noteworthy in most respects. The styling, inside and our, is fresh without being trendy or awkward. Handling and power are superb. Price is reasonable for what you're getting.

The R8 is a winner. Plain and simple. And that looks good on Audi. Kudos.
