Back To The Future Re Deux? DeLorean Motor Cars Rises From The Dead

The DeLorean is back.

Twenty-five years after the stainless steel carmaker went belly up, the vehicle that starred in all three "Back to the Future" movies will get a new lease on life, according to executives of the new DeLorean company, formed in 1995.

James Espey, vice president of DeLorean Motor Co., said the company will begin building new DeLoreans next year. The cars will sell for $57,500 and retain the squared-off looks and gull-wing doors that made them unique.

Instead of mass producing the cars, DeLorean will assemble them by hand in Humble, Texas. Espey said the company will build one or two cars a month.

"Job 1 will begin in the third quarter of next year," said Espey of a possible start time.

Standing with several DeLorean owners along Woodward Avenue during Saturday's Dream Cruise, Espey described the cottage business that emerged from the wreckage of the bankrupt original DeLorean company.

Oh goodie!

I can now purchase a brand new (old-a$$$) DeLorean.

I would hope that just the exterior is the same as the original as power, emissions, transmission, suspension config, etc. has come a long way since the mid-80s.

And for almost $60k, this car better be mightly appealing. Maybe the company is going to announce a patent for a real "Mr. Fusion" to qualify the cost this beast.

Why buy this over a Porsche Cayman S, BMW M Coupe, BMW M3, Audi S5, Nissan GT-R, Mercedes-Benz CLK550 or Chevrolet Corvette?

vdiv, the stainless steel you refer to is simply a veneer. It was alleged to be cheaper to use SS veneer than to paint the car. I wish it were a real stainless steel car which would never rust out.

OK, I'll take the veneer then :)

Call me old fashioned, but I still like this car. It has a character, it is instantly recognizable and in my view it was never given a chance to evolve and improve. This is that second chance.
