GM May Make 60,000 `Volt' Electric Cars in First Year

General Motors Corp. may build as many as 60,000 of its Volt electric cars for their inaugural year on the market, four times the sales of Toyota Motor Corp.'s hybrid Prius on its U.S. debut, people with knowledge of GM's plans said.

Production at that level may allow GM to sell the plug-in Volt for less than $30,000, said the people, who didn't want to be identified because the plans are confidential.

GM and there bold predictions. Where is that Camaro? I see GM is already advertising the non-existent Volt on this site. Big difference form the tight lipped Toyota execs who will neither confirm nor deny anything about the next Prius.

There is not much technology in electric vehicles other than a Li-Ion battery that lasts 10 yrs and is inexpensive and safe. Such battery does not exist today. Not as far as I can see in 5 years. GM is just dreaming. I will believe it when I see it.
So far, I read a lot of "could", "may", "depending on..." from GM. Just a ton of marketing hypes. Will GM stand behind their Volt with 10 yr warranty like Toyota do with Prius? I would love to see a Li-Ion battery that lasts 10 years.

while i'm no GM fan, i know at least they have been smart enuff to recognize and RESPOND to their japanese competitors, actually making VAST IMPROVEMENTS in quality in recent years.

the same CAN NOT be said of the germans.

they seem still oblivious to the seriousness of their competition, and have actually now been BYPASSED by Detroit in building good quality, RELIABLE CARS.

What did GM do with all the information accumulated from the EV1 and EV2?Sounds like another dead end project car.I'm glad that a big company like Toyota is pushing forward on new technology and proves it.I hope GM makes this car but don't hold your breath.
