No Such Thing as a “Green” Car

Reuters reports that Norway is banning manufacturers from advertising a car's green credentials. As far Norways's Department of Truth (a.k.a. Consumer Ombudsman) is concerned, "cars cannot do anything good for the environment except less damage than others." By that, state censor Bente Oeverli means that certain cars can be less harmful than others, but they're ALL bad for the planet. But don't try and claim your car is less harmful than the other guys, 'cause that's banned too. "If someone says their car is more 'green' or 'environmentally friendly' than others then they would have to be able to document it in every aspect from production, to emissions, to energy use, to recycling," she said. "In practice that can't be done." Meanwhile, in the UK, Volvo was told not to repeat a claim that the C30 car was "designed with the utmost respect for the environment in mind." Now that we can understand. Respect in mind? Tsk tsk.

I like diesels best, especially German diesels, but your statement is wild and too vague. I want Mercedes to bring the Vision C220 Bluetec to North America ASAP.
If they don't, I may just buy a rice burner or GM product instead.

David 989 states that diesels cause cancer -- I agree you can get cancer if you go around sniffing older diesel exhaust pipes while the engine is running. Particulate traps on modern diesels were meant to contain those cancer-causing particles and prevent their escape into your breathing space. BTW, it was recently reported that workers in popcorn-making factories were getting serious lung ailments due to breathing an excess of one of the ingredients of popcorn in their work environment. Cancer risk is everywhere all the way from asbestos dust in buildings to bezene fumes in gasoline. You can even get cancer from eating the poisons that the food industry uses as pesticides and unnecessary food additives. Hundreds of thousand die every year worldwide by chewing or smoking tobacco. Some cancers are genetic and are therefore totally unpreventable. I'll take my chances with modern diesels any day, especially small diesels such as the engine in the Vision C220 Bluetec.

I'll never consider a used diesel car. I have asthma, as well as chronic issues. modern diesel, well, can't say much but they are making a lot of tq. but im not considering one yet nor a hybrid.

just cars that are somewhat less damaging.

if you REALLY care about the environment...take a bus, ride a bike, take a train, walk.
