Volkswagen is Launching Clean Diesel Offensive

Volkswagen is well known as a leader in clean diesel technology. After ending its cooperation with Mercedes-Benz on the Bluetec Diesel campaign, starting early in 2008 Volkswagen will launch new clean diesel engines in the US market using the CleanTDI branding.

The first models available in US will be the new Jetta CleanTDI and the Golf Variant CleanTDI.

The high end clean diesel engines has been specially developed for the USA and has been designed to also emissions regulations in California – the strictest in the world.

In Europe Volkswagen has a range of TDI engines that already meet the 2009 Euro-5 emissions standards. By the end of 2008 VW will have nine BlueMotion models in their lineup.

Some approximate numbers have been published by VW regarding the 2008 Jetta TDI with the new CR 2.0-liter. Around 140 horsepower, up from 100 that was sported in the 2006 with the 1.9-liter. Torque will come in around 236, up from 177 in the previous motor. The new motor will still be approved for B5 biodiesel, and the new motor should actually improve on previous fuel economy, up from 38 mpg to around 45 mpg city/hwy. combined.

This article states that VW will put the TDI in the Rabbit, but I have not read that before. I believe the confirmed vehicles are the Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, and the Tiguan. VW leaves the Rabbit diesel as just a possibility for now.

With regards to the Tiguan, however, VW has shown this same engine with SCR (adblue) NOx abatement as opposed to the LNT-type NOx abatement that will be used in the Jettas. The concept Tiguan actually came in at around 200 horsepower, which would give this diesel 100 horsepower per liter if produced to those numbers.
