I think the side impact and the pole test are more important. The EURONCAP tested 1st Series was 5 doors hatchback.
Is it wise to design a "premium" car with similar protection level with a small cars? How can you "escape from the car where the occupants can use only 2 side doors? In case of side impact the both side of the car will be deformed. Why they did not test the impact protection of 3 doors H/B? Do not forget, the rear-wheeldrive body structure has completely different stiffness then a front wheel drive one.

The IS has the most ridiculous back seat of any 4 seat near luxury car. Stuck on stupid......

what dealerships are those? Here in the US we will not receive the 1-series for another 6 months. In the US the 1-series will debut in the spring of 2008

If you think the 1-series is too small for you and you can't fit in the back, think again. You are over weight.

The Audi A3 may or may not handle better than The 1er coupe. But shouldn't we at least wait til someone take the 1er for a spin and gives an opinion of it's handling & performance before we come to conclusions?

I'll take both. A3 2.0T for frugal, stylish, fun, versatile daily driver, and a 135i coupe for weekend getaways and such.

Lets see it with a decent sized driver and the seat back. I think its still a bit small.

It would help some of you if the 1 Series was thought about as a R32 / STi / Evo alternative. All these cars, specially the R32, will reach in the good $30K bracket and have just as much or lesser space and since its a coupe....the car is basically front driver & passenger focussed anyway....in all coupes, most of the space and attention is devoted to the front occupants.

Yeah it's too small - in the same way the Porsche 911 doesn't have enough legroom in the back, the Elise is too light (not enough creature comfort), and the Mini Cooper is too stiff for long hauls - what are we nitpicking here? In fact, without going to another manufacturer, BMW does offer fun cars with more backseat room (M5, 4-door M3 soon). But then again, the headline might read: "Is the M5 too heavy?" or "Is the M3 too expensive (50% more than a 135i)?" Everything comes at a price - literally and figuratively.

It's insane to (even) imply that a company with BMW's reputation would not have done their market research for such a (potentially) mainstream/high-volume vehicle.

This is about the 1 series coupe, even if the space was smaller there was no problem after all it is suposed to be that way, if someone needs something bigger the solution is to buy a 3 or a 5 or a 7 series ..., this of course if you want to buy a BMW!! To me this car recovers the BMW essence and the space or the lack of it is not really a issue specialy because you don't really have anything else to compete/compare with it!!

The whole point of this car is that it is small and sporty. Yet people are complaining about the space? The 1-series also has a 5 star Euro NCAP rating for occupant safety. The highest you can achieve.
