Does "F" Stand For "Fantastic"? First Look 2008 Lexus IS-F

Does
It's as if the New York Philharmonic added an "An Evening of Kanye West" to its concert season. Though Lexus has always carefully presented itself as the jewel of the Toyota empire, it's preparing to jettison two decades of heritage with the 2008 Lexus IS-F, a tough-looking car fortified with a 400-horsepower V8 that will challenge the Audi RS4 and BMW M3.

It's the most surprising thing Toyota's luxury division has done since hiring actor James Sloyan to purr out words like "relentless," "pursuit" and "perfection" back in 1989 before it had even sold a single car.

It must stand for "Fast and Furious." Or how about Fugly? I'm sorry, but this thing looks like garbage. Even if it is somewhat competitive, performance-wise, I'd rather buy an inferior car than associate myself with the idiot posers who drive Lexus yawn-mobiles - like the moron with the IS300 who insisted on racing me on I-94 and I-57 today, and got smoked twice while I had 3 people in my car! Grow up Laxus owners.

I agree sweetheart. The IS-F is very bold and macho looking. It has manliness written all over it. The kind of guys driving this car are confident men in their late 10s and early 20s who know what makes a true performance sedan.

Without question the IS-F is the most reliable, best interior (including seats), best brakes, quickest, fastest, most comfortable, best handling and my gosh it looks so hot!

Everytime I see this car I get aroused. It is just so beautiful. Lexus should only sell it in blue. Give me an IS-F and I'll show you guys how to kill an M3 or even a Veyron.

"The kind of guys driving this car are confident men in their late 10s and early 20s who know what makes a true performance sedan."

David- I read that and couldn't help wondering if you were mocking yourself. Very few cars are marketed to people in their teens and early twenties. Cars that are intended for that age group, are generally cheap and not taken seriously by older people. Additionally, 18-24 year olds aren't very good drivers becuase they are young and lack the driving knowledge and experience necessary to identify a "true performance" car. What does all of this say about the Lexus?

I think Houstoncutie's keyboard is broken. The caps key is stuck. That's what I heard anyway.

Honestly though, I think Lexus has hired an American designer to come up with their new designs. They probably asked, "How can we make this car look over-the-top while trying copy the Germans edgy, provocative styling? And, how can we do this while still preserving our bland, ricey styling cues that our buyers have come to expect and love?"

...and Wah-lah. This is the best they could come up with. The previous generation had more character than this thing. You can compare it to a TSX or G37, but NOT an M3. The M3 is in a whole other league that Lexus will never, ever see.

Above all, it's STILL a Lexus! No matter how hard they try they will never compete with BMW, MB, or Audi on styling or performance. Why settle for a Lexus if you want a performance car?

Lexus NEEDS to worry about DIRECT competitors (Acura and Infinity) in their BACKYARD. They should be the most fearful of HYUNDAI though! That's right, HYUNDAI! They're coming for you!

My 85 745i turbo running 16psi of boost will own any of your cars, and if you want we can line up anyday. 399 rear wheel hp (not at the flywheel) and 496lb/ft torque everything is stock except for a re-programed chip, modified wastegate, cartech FMU rising rate fuel pressure regulator. Take that from a 22 year old car, you wouldn't believe the looks I get burning camaro's mustangs and GTO's (stock to lightly modified) on the highway. anyways I am getting off of the point. BMW's are quited good cars if maintained properly, they aren't like American cars, although they have improved considerably, and BMW's inline 6 engines are bullet proof. The LS is the king in its class, so is the IS, LX570, SC430 the GS. The ES has no rivals because the Germans are afraid to touch it. The RX needs an update but it was the best SUV in its class when it was new. Actually I still consider the RX to be the best SUV in its class. Who wants an X5 or ML when you can have a reliable, powerful and quality interior Lexus RX?

Richie, just remember that Lexus is a true innovator and leader. Other car companies look up to Lexus for inspiration and they benchmark Lexus interiors and build quality.

Rolls Royce recently admitted that they benchmark Toyota Corolla interiors because they're so good. Imagine what would happened if Rolls Royce benchmarked the Lexus LS interior for example. They'd get some respect back!

Lexus 400HP = German 600HP? Lol...too funny. Obviously Lexus is not a trendsetter because they are trying to compete with German automakers that ALREADY have sport versions of their autos for many years. Lexus is an upstart trying to catch up. Yes Lexus is a good auto maker and luckily owned by Toyota with deep pockets.

I understand David and Houston get their kicks from saying stupid things so it is good they are here for comical relief. Thank you!

I have ready most of the comments here about how Lexus vehicles are tops in everything--power, looks, quality--and reliability. Well, allow me to elaborate on my experience with Lexus. I bought a new '07 IS350 in December 06--I, too, believed the hype that the cars were rock-solid and I could look forward to years of trouble free driving. The car has been a quality nightmare from day one. As I write this, it is in the shop for the 8th time to have repairs made. It has been out of service 33 days in the 8 months I have had it. There have been rattles(EVERYWHERE), the Nav system stopped working 3 separate times--the sunroof jammed and would not close. There were loose trim panels, missing pieces in the b-pillar--and the list goes on and on. Most of the problems have been chalked up as "poor assembly' by the dealer. My point is no car, Lexus or not, is perfect. They all can have problems. I for one am trading this car as soon as I can. I could deal with the cold, no-driver involvement feel of my IS--if it was a quality car. It is not. I think the folks on here who blindly hide behind Lexus' reputation for quality and reliability should realize a Lexus is just a car too. But then again, I doubt most of them would ever be able to buy one

I seriously doubt that to be true CTS. I am a die hard loyal BMW kind of guy, but Lexus is a damn reliable car and I have nothing bad to say about them except they are a little less emotionaly invigorating than some others. Lexus are made here in the U.S. so I can bet they aren't built with as much pride and attention to details because as they once were, as our mentality is so much different fromt he Japanese (no offense to anyone). Anyway, I think if you really had that much trouble, Lexus would have given you another or bought that one back, or the Lemon Law would have came into play. I am a car fan. I appreciate cars, not labels. I like Lexus, love Audi (the A8 is a the most beautiful large sedan to me) Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, etc. I like some of Just about all makes. They are building more and more of them in the U.S. Just before recently they were only built in Japan. Now I believe the es, new lx570, rx and gx470 are built here in the U.S, so There goes Lexus perfection, becaude you can have the best design but if it is assembled like crap it ain't going to be as good as the designers intended it to be. We Americans don't take pride nor care about our products like the Japanese and Germans do. We have the laziest don't care attitude of any other country I know of. Why do you think we make the crappiest cars. Why do you think GM sux so bad. especially their electronics. Delco has to be the crappiest electronics company I now of. I am a mechanic and you wouldn't belive the crap we go through everytime a GM vehicle comes in especially with an electrical problem. you'd have to see it to believe it. You know how much of a pain it is to do a simple tune up on a Camaro with an lt1 v8? you have to take the harmonic balancer off and the water pump to get to the distributor cap, but you can't get it wet of its trash and the optispark is expensive. the wires are routed to where it is a pain to re-run them unless you have hands the size of a dwarf, the plugs are hard as hell to get to, you have to tae all of this crap off to get to the front of the engine to access the water pump. it takeds a good mechanic about a day and cost alot. I can do a complete tune up on my BMW in about 30 min or less. fuel pump on a chevy lumina over $300 for the part and then you have to drop the fuel tank which is always full and cram your arm up in a space you can't see to dis connect the fuel lines and wiring. my BMW....$79 and takes about 10 minutes to change and the ones with internal tank pumps had great idea of making a panel to access the top of the fuel tank so you don't have to go through al of that hell to access the fuel pump. Volvo, BMW and most Japanese cars are also lie this. American cars are the biggest pain in the a$$ to work on and they always break down.

And by the way, Lexus cars may have reliable electronics, but they are just not very well-built. The trim pieces are coming loose on the RX, the wind noise is getting worse and the rubber trim strip along the door fell off. It's not as if we're going off-roading in this thing or anything. "Lexus will have to go along way to even equal the RS4, let alone the M3 or the C63."

You're saying that as if the RS4 is the worst of the three. All three are so evenly-matched that there's no clear "best" right now; the RS4 was the benchmark last year and the C63 and M3 are both challenging that. There has been no conqueror as of now.

001/009 - I think it is about time that you implement a system to block or isolate comments from posters like David989, Houston, benz??? etc. that, regardless of motivation (sarcasm, irony, stupidity, hate) take the dialogue down to an unbearable level.

EX: David989 "Rolls Royce recently admitted that they benchmark Toyota Corolla interiors because they're so good."

We can all have bad days, enjoy pointed humor, or have passionate positions, but these individuals add nothing to the dialogue and are deboosted to the point of being ridiculous. Some of them seem to average a -10.

Autospies should relegate the posters with that kind of average to their own thread -"Ranters Corner"- for a period of time so that ANY response they enter to ANY thread will go automatically to the "Ranters Corner" and the adults can continue on with our dialogue. (If we are really bored we can visit their thread and see what the lunatics are doing in the asylum.)

This would help eliminate multiple identity posters and distill this site down to some of the really bright and well spoken enthusiasts that we all enjoy reading comments from.

The site would still get the posts and hits it gets paid for but you might bring people into the conversation that don't want to dip their toe into the intellectual cesspool this has devolved into.

Something to think about. It is past time for you guys to do SOMETHING!!!

OK. I'll take that at face value. But tell me why to buy it over the...

• Audi RS4: high-revving, 420hp V8 that may be upgraded to 450 for 2008. A gem of an engine, as well as perfectly-weighted steering and a slick manual transmission that's just more fun than ANY auto, DSG, eight-speed or not

• BMW M3: similarly to the RS4, it has a fantastic V8 engine that loves to rev and supremely capable handling; you can customize your M3 driving experience in hundreds of different programmable ways

• Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG: a breakthrough for Mercedes-Benz is this latest model. Also like the RS4, it combines comfort and style with a glorious engine and mold-breaking handling

I know the IS-F will be a very impressive machine, but it looks like it's shaping up to be an "alternative" to these three big boys.

Here F should mean the 'F' word. This one is gross, fugly, and retarded.

And it is 2 days, and 200 posts.

If this car were to NOT have any impact on the market, it is safe to say that this would get as much recognition as a special edition Buick Park Avenue. But, alas, it isn't.

If Lexus bores you so much, move on.

If this IS-F doesn't deliver on its promise of high-performance and intuitive driver involvement, then it probably would not interest me much. We simply don't know all that much about it yet, but it seems to already be getting underneath your skin, fellas.

If you like the M3, RS4, and C63 as much as you do and don't think there is any reason to give this car credibility, then there is no need comment on it as much as you do. You are all giving it the opposite of what you think it doesn't deserve - CREDIBILITY! Kind of a catch-22 isn't it?

Anyways, I'm more of an RS4 man, myself. I actually don't know whether I dislike the IS-F, or if I like it yet. I decide to wait until there is something to discuss.

Until then, enjoy the flame war!

YOU may be joking, but what you didn't understand is that what I said may apply to the majority of posters on this site. Forgive me for singling you out.

I just came back from walking the dog (bear) so that he could do his nightly ritual: dumping some logs.

Time to hit the sack.

Goodnight.

Hyundai, I think the reason the IS-F threads (and Lexus threads in general) generate so much bashing is because of the people in it, not the car itself. If there were not so many opposing views, we would not have 240 posts.

They are trying to convince each other that THEIR views are the only right views- similar to religion. It's interesting, and if provoked, I get into it, too. But I don't want to.

Seriously. This car is so vile and tacky, I wouldn't even allow my domestic servants to pull up the the gates of my East Hampton compound or my Upper West Side penthouse driving such a garish car. Ugh!!!!

It seriously it nasty and if I look at that over-done with hideousness, plebeian, trash vehicle one more time I will just gouge my eyes out.

Who is Lexus in the hideous, low-class race with? Are they trying to battle the ugliness within their own brand because they clearly have no style or a sense of fashion.

That's all.

I would personally bar my Nepalese cleaner from driving up to my 2 million dollar house in London's best suburb or to my villa in Spain in one of these frightfully common cars, it would lower my house price!

None of my rich and educated friends have Lexus because we all drive around floating on our own hot air, terribly comfortable and organic as well.

Now excuse me, I have tea with Princess Anne and Camilla Parker-Bowles at 5, must dash.

Toodle-pip!

And if I were ever to pull up alongside that hideous Lexus whilst driving in traffic I will personally sue that driver for emotional distress.

Something so nasty in this day of age coming from a brand trying to compete with the modern, fluid and stylish designs of the new Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi should be barred from the motor way.

Bloody hell.

I use "whilst". Were you do go back and look at some of my older posts I have absolutely no doubt that you would find it there.

Of course, I have other eccentricities which my friends love to point out to me. Never ask me the time apparently. Yesterday I was derided for saying 2:53 was "eight past three quarters after 2" I am very visual and give correspondingly visual answers as that is just how my brain processes information.

His response to all of this was "We need to get you a digital watch"

Once while stopping near the valet station at the mall briefly before leaving, a man asked me what time it was- I was looking at my watch. My response slipped out at "A third of a quarter past a half 'till two" His look would have undoubtedly been the same had I answered him in Aramaic. Of course, I realized this and just told him: 1:35

It stands for "FUJI SPEEDWAY" where the car was tested. It can and will compete with BMW,AUDI,and Mercedes.Just rembember all of these cars are ultra low production.Everybody will sell every copy they import.I can't belive anyone wouldn't want to own any of these cars they are all great. Its like having a blonde redhead and a brunette they all feel different but are all fun to drive.

Ultra low production? This is a Toyota. This is a car I might buy for my teenage son. Don't think for a moment that this is an exclusive exotic. This is a starter car for a middle income American or a teenager. A Ferrari 599 is an ultra low production exotic that would be worth owning, but a Lexus?

You must have cow manure for your brains boy.Two thousand copies a year or so is ultra low production. If you bought this car for your son he would wreck it the first day.Just about everyone on this site doesn't have the driving skills to handle the power of these cars.I didn't use the word exotic anywhere in my post, but I'm sure performance will be close to the ferrari at a fraction of the cost.
