BMW M DCT dual-clutch to debut in M3 sedan

BMW will use the launch of its upcoming M3 Sedan to introduce its first dual-clutch gearbox. The company is expected to show the sedan and touring versions at an upcoming American motor show, which leaves Los Angeles and Detroit in the running. The new dual-clutch gearbox called “M DCT” will get seven forward gears, however a 6-speed manual transmission will also be available.

A huge step forward for BMW. I've driven the Audi A3 and this trans is so good that it will propel BMW a few notches higher than the competition.

Yes, I have an A3 and wonder constantly why it isn't used ACROSS THE LINEUP! It would make the new RS6 accelerate from 0-60mph in under 3.5 seconds!

BTW- I understand that there are problems with it handling the torque, but what's taking them so long in developing the seven-speed system?

I thought the problem was that the current DSG Audi and VW use can only be used with transversly mounted engines, maybe I'm wrong.

im pretty sure the dct will be offered in 09 while the 08s will initially only be offered in manual.

Only when its measured up against the Audi DSG benchmark will I have an opinion. BMW clearly had a looser with the SMG, for that matter there was not a single OEM that has anything close to Audi's DSG. Now many are working hard to catch up or copy Audi's technology. I want to see a comparo, but I do not expect BMW to improve upon the DSG.

for your information AUDI is NOT the inventor of the Dual Clutch Transmission, It happened to be the first to use it and it named Its version DSG....You look stupid making such statements

You're right, but they were the first to successfully implement it- similar to Toyota's hybrid technology. Everyone sees its advantages and are rushing to put out their own variations.
