Modern day Duesenberg is coming

A production version of the Duesenberg Torpedo Coupe pictured in this concept drawing was promised to be on the market by August of this year but, as the guys at Hemmings have spotted, the release date has now been pushed back to mid 2008. The modern day version of the American luxury classic is the creation of Duesenberg Custom Coach and Californian designer Jeff Teague and is said to feature an innovative new powertrain dubbed the Cylindrical Engine Model or CEM for short.

I have followed this story, and I must say that I am not so sure it is legitimate. I won’t go into more detail, as I can’t find the article I read about the group that was supposedly developing this CEM engine, but there seems to be something really odd going on with this whole thing. The reveal has been pushed back two or three times already.

Anyway, I really don’t like this idea. There has already been one failed attempt to resurrect Duesenberg, and I really don’t doubt that this may be another. To be quite frank about it probably nothing they create will even begin to compare with the originals.

It isn’t even priced like a Duesenberg – where it priced like a Duesenberg it would be twice as expensive as a Maybach- literally. A Maybach around latter parts of their functioning was $12,000- a Duesenberg (or certain types of Isotta Fraschini) where over $25,000 at the time. In modern terms purchasing a Duesenberg was equivalent to spending $1.3 - $1.8 million.

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see the resurrection of a true Duesenberg- this however is not one.

Looking at the Foose concept pics and knowing that the concept will be built on a donor CL500 platform makes me think "Maybach coupe". Why not?
