The real catch is that the Volt can't keep up with rapid acceleration after rapid acceleration after rapid acceleration without depleting the energy stored in its batteries.

Besides cost… these cars at the end of their lives will be part of 1 of several hundred massive battery dumpsites. Is it a green car? Yeah, sure it is… for now. Same goes for all those hybrid and electric cars we have been buying for years… Electric sounds like the cool way to go since it looks clean. Hydrogen and Diesel need to be our focus.

Hydrogen is the future - diesel is in the same boat with hybrids, etc.

And why make this car so big? Looks full size...they should make it comparable to an Accord - I mean - the Malibu.

Punch in "air car" on Google! This is far superior to all other teck! After watching this all debates will be over! Although any of these technologies could recharge the air car.

Rupert - you are wrong, that's only one method.
hydrogen can be converted to mechanical energy (torque) in one of two methods: electrochemical conversion in a fuel-cell or combustion :

In combustion, the hydrogen is burned in engines in fundamentally the same method as traditional gasoline cars.

In fuel-cell conversion, the hydrogen is reacted with oxygen to produce water and electricity, the latter of which is used to power an electric traction motor.

Hydrogen can also be produced from water by electrolysis. If the electricity used for the electrolysis is produced using renewable energy or nuclear power, the production of the hydrogen would (in principle) result in no net carbon dioxide emissions.

I was about to say what M35MT said. People dismiss hydrogen so quickly because they figure the only way to produce it in larger quantity is to increase the volume using current production techniques. The challenge with hydrogen is not building a car to use it (BMW already showed us how possible that is) but building the system by which to produce it. Imagine a tidal or nuclear energy plant who's sole purpose is to produce hydrogen way out on some island in the middle of nowhere. Zero carbon, zero danger, limitless supply. That's the hydrogen future.

Fully agree with Airliner but I recognize that eventually we will end up with a hydrogen economy once cheap conversion of solar energy into electricity is achieved. We have plenty of water to convert into hydrogen and oxygen with electrolysis but we need cheap and clean electricity to do it. The world also needs to control its population or we will kill ourselves fighting over scarce resources and living space.

What makes someone think that this vehicle looks large?

It's actually only a bit larger than the Cobalt if I remember correctly...

The wheels just placed at the very extremes of the vehicle, giving it a very accommodating wheelbase, as well as a muscular stance.

Exerokool, back to the air car being the cleanest power, An air powered car can be recharged with any fuel! Electrical,gas,diesel,hydrogen...Or just go to the gas station and fill it with air for a few hundres miles! WOW!

You still have to have energy input to the air compressor at the gas station. If the primary energy source is not green and efficient what do you gain?

Cost? Most people can afford a $30K car. It is the battery warranty you have to look at. That will make or break the Volt. So far I can live with 8-9sec 0-60 for electric. The design makes the car look big in pics but it is a mid size auto. Very cool.

Airliner...batteries will be recycled and not just dumped into land fills. True that hydrogen needs to arrive sooner than later.

too bad the engineers said 8.5-9 seconds is more reasonable

It really seems to be a shame that there currently isn't expected to be a model of this car that has any performance.
