The best car interior for under $60K

Some of the things we look for in a great interior are:

1. Overall good looks
2. Functional and well laid out interface
3. Color and material choices
4. Quality of materials
5. Easy to understand switchgear and graphical icons
6. Ergonomic setup
7. Timeless and classic appeal

If those things are important to you then we're sure you'll agree it's hard to beat the interior of 2005 BMW Z4.

We love the classic but modern-not retro look they've accomplished.

Every switch is in the right place, the gauges look like a fine watch and anywhere you look inside the cabin is pleasing to the eye.

For all the GM designers who read our newsletter, if the new corvette had done a modern interpretation of the 63 corvette interior, it would have won our 2005 car of the year. We felt the new interior was the weakest point of the new Vette (a symptom of all GM cars).

Even though the Z4 has not been a big winner on the sales floor, we still like the BMW roadster and you can't beat the killer lease deals dealers are running on them.

personally, I much prefer the Audi TT interior. A far better choice than this cold feel BMW Cockroach-looking-mobile ...

While I very much like the Z4, and do rather like the interior, its dynamics, as noted in many UK magazines, are not up to the normal BMW standard. The large rims make for a very harsh ride, and the steering does not tell the driver much about what is happening at the wheels. Of course, the engine is as creamy as ever, and the gearbox slick and precise. Whereas the 05 SLK, as noted in the same magazines, has lost its predesessors rather inferior dynamics for a very balanced chassis, direct steering and compliant ride.

The SLK is now a car for real driving enthusiasts.
