But please tell me that Mazda doesn't intend on allowing (the very nice... but aging) Mazda3 platform to soldier on until 2018...

Who do they think they are, the U.S. Ford Focus... LOL!

2018 will likely be 2 more generations away. Expect an all new model in 2009 or 2010 at the latest, and another one in 2014/2015. The current Gen is in its 5th model year (counting 2008 models). This is an awesome opportunity for those who really want it.
