Audi R8 vs. Porsche 911 GT3 vs. BMW M3 in WindingRoad

WindingRoad tests the Audi R8, Porsche 911 GT3 and BMW M3. Although there was no "winner" of this test, being that the cars are so different in their purpose, it is a fabulous article nonetheless.

The guys at WindingRoad clearly mention how the Porsche 911 GT3 is by far the most unforgiving, raw, hard, and built for track use car out of the three. They say the GT3 is as stable as the Audi R8 at very high speeds, but it requires the driver's full attention and awareness. Clearly, the GT3 is by far the best car Porsche builds at the moment and that would include all 911 variants right up to the GT2. The car is lighter than the 911 Turbo, almost as fast in acceleration and it will carve up the Nurburgring faster than the 911 Turbo due to its better balanced chassis, and driver-oriented focus. Now the GT2 may have lapped the Ring in 7:32, but unless you are the driver in that amazing clip that we saw on Autospies with the GT2 running around the Ring, you might very well be dead due to your lack of ability to control the beast that is the GT2

The Audi R8 is praised for its amazing ability to deliver exactly what it was built to do. Built by Audi as an exotic sportscar that can be used everyday, the R8 combines truly exotic looks, sublime handling, excellent feedback and feel for the driver given the compromise of the everyday driveability factor, brilliant exhaust note, monster ceramic brakes and an interior that surrounds the driver in extremely high quality materials and clear ergonomics. The R8 feels easy to drive even at very high speeds and has been clocked at 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds by Motortrend magazine, squarely putting its acceleration in true everyday supercar territory.

The upcoming R8 with V10 promises to be a brilliant car with even greater performance.

Lastly, the BMW M3 is included in this test. Some might ask why considering it costs so much less than the $107,000 Porsche GT3 and $110K Audi R8. Well, the purpose of this test was to get the three hottest coupes from three of the hottest German manufacturers and the M3 would make that list. WindingRoad disagrees with the other magazines and publications that say the E92 M3 with V8 is a worse car than its E46 V6 predecessor. They say the M3 is more interesting, stronger and more capable than its previous version.

Obviously, the M3 is beat in acceleration quite easily by the R8 and GT3, but it still manages to give these much more expensive cars a decent run for their money.

If R10 TDI is a proper rear wheel drive, why can't AUDI release a RWD version for R8? That will save at least 250lb and further differentiate it from Lambo.

When everyone's got both RWD and AWD, AUDI stayed on the same path as ACURA does. AUDI is probably selling a lot better, but whenever I saw one, I cannot help but think of LEXUS ES.

The R10 is only RWD because Audi is not allowed to make it AWD, and making the R8 RWD would be like making a FWD M BMW or a FWD Ford Mustang.

"When everyone's got both RWD and AWD, AUDI stayed on the same path as ACURA does. "

Actually, it's Acura that's copying Audi. They're taking FWD cars and making them SH-AWD.

Audi is not making a RWD car- don't hold your breath.

well that has always been the M3's issue, people always compare it to the previous model, and it never seems as good as the previous model, or as hard edged until the next model comes out. the the second m3 when it was first released got the same thing the new has its not hard edged like the previous bla bla, when the e46 was released they said the same thing its to soft compared to the last one, now they are the same about current m3, it would seem that the M3 has never been what Mags thinks it should be.....yet each is so highly praised contradicton maybe?

The M3 is about half the price of the audi and the Porsche and held its own? How cool is that? I'm a Bimmer fan, and love these tests. I might trade my 550 in for the M3.
