It won't matter if this vehicle has 600hp, it is still a Toyota/Lexus. It is not going to "destroy" anyone. (based on looks alone that is definitely not going to happen)

It's appeal will be limited by the market for high performance Luxury autos where MB,BMW,Audi,Porsche et al have a proven record of delivering great autos that have stood the test of time and become collectors favorites.

The Germans (BMW and Merc and Audi)are bound by a gentlemans agreement to limit to 155 mph set quite a few years ago.

Lexus is not part of that agreement so they can limit to whatever speed is the max if they want.

why does the S65 have a 158mph top speed? Because it's limited. Without the governor it would go over 200mph, and so would the M5 and M6.

A bit premature for the IS-F to claim it is the best? If I were a betting person it might hit 170 downhill with a tailwind.

About the Mercedes S65 AMG having a Top Speed of 158 mph. I don't think 3 mph is that big of an issue to waste bandwidth on.

The IS-F is still a major step forward for a company typically delivers 85% of the performance for 70% of the price.

If that formula still holds true then value conscience enthusiast will still embrace the appeal. After all close enough for 70% of the price has alway rung true for some and Lexus built it's foundation on that philosophy.

Only now with the IS-F and LF-A can they break free from Walmart philosophy.

Before you keep making dim-witted comments about exceptions to the gentleman's agreement, let me give you some FACTS:

• High-performance models, such as the S65 AMG and the new BMW M6, have sometimes slipped by the agreement. You can order any AMG car without a limiter. The Audi R8, on the other hand, doesn't come with one and can go up to about 190mph.

• Porsche is not in the agreement. It's ONLY Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

• The limiter has nothing to do with the actual top speed. For all we know, the RS4 and M3 can easily go past 180mph.

I guess they have to go a European supplier (ie. brembo) to put real brakes on a toyota.

I think it sucks so far! Has everyone forgotten that at the end of the US open in tennis the president of Lexus NA said the HP is 400??? I have said this multiple times and yet everyone asks what the HP will be. Email Rodger Federer and ask him how his IS-F is. Lexus is a marketing company, not a car company.

So? The Engine in the M5 has 4 oil pumps, two of these are at the sides of the oil sump to pick up oil from the outer cylinder head on each respective side and pump it back into the sump once cornering loads exceed 0.6 g

I can't imagine it being too special since its function is not different from other scavanger pumps. That is marketing speak for making something as mundane as that and trying to spruce it up.

Honestly though, while Lexus makes a well built car, I rarely see them at the top of any comparison test other than price. But price is an important part of the equation the Germans seem to miss.

After all how often do you really need a 200 mph sedan that goes 0-60 in 4.2 second. When you can have a 170mph one that goes 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. Remember we only can drive 80 mph here legally and only in some states.

Lexus had told us nothing but 0-60 under 4.9, Max speed 168mph, 5 liter V-8 with more than 400 hp and more than 350 ft/lb torque for about 4-5 months now?

M3, C63 AMG came out and they still aren't telling us any more informations. I guess we'll have to wait longer for the engineers to finalize their outputs to "outperform" the Germans.

The car itself represents itself. Pretty impressed with the direction IS-F is heading. The website, with the blue fire and all, is an overkill. We understand it's gonna be fast and comet fast with blue fiery tail. We got that.

Honestly, having ULEV II emissions means nothing on this type of car. It will still get 14mpg. It's still bad for the environment and will be seen as such- so are the RS4, M3 and C63 AMG.

Nice site. It is there for people who may have heard about this vehicle, and want to see what it looks like. The "enthusiasts" on this site already know what it looks like, but always want to comment on a Lexus whether good or bad.
The number of comments so far just goes to show that Lexus is really on the move, and a true threat to the dominance of European "uber" sedans as the vehicle of choice for future buyers.

saw the isf yesterday and its clear through this website that lexus changed some details on the production car. car will sell for sure. i was told to expect 5000 units a year. not understanding all the hate for a machine. but who knows! people hate success of others?

It's not just the tailpipes. It's the unsightly hood, the strangely placed side inlets and the oversized front intakes. AND the stacked exhausts.

They took a gorgeous small sedan (IS350) and ruined it. I could say this over and over, and all you'd retort with is how ugly the new M3 is or how Mercedes uses a 6.2L V8 and can "only" make 450hp. I'm still waiting for you to admit that this car is just not attractive. More than anything else, it's the hood that really ruins it. If they had actually put some engineering effort into it-like Audi-and hadn't changed the body (changing the engine instead), it could be sexy. But it's not.

Listen carefully, BMW boys, M3 what? Absolutely no comparison by the sound alone.

Here's some Audi, BMW and Mercedes bashing from me:

• Why is the A6 so boring? I love the S6/RS6, but the A6 (especially the 3.2) is utterly unimpressive. NEW ENGINE and DSG, please! Lose some weight, and get a styling refresh!

• The 7 Series desperately needs to be redesigned. There's no reason not to get an XJ, LS, S or A8 over it unless you are freakishly obsessed with BMW. The S-Class handles better AND is more comfortable; the A8 looks WAY better inside and out and is critically acclaimed; the LS is far more luxurious, stylish and advanced; the XJ actually is more BMW-like in its handling and reflexes. And the only one of the above that's more money is the S-Class-- it's worth it.

• And that Mercedes M-Class... it's competent, I guess. But like the A6, competent just isn't enough. It's so boring. Also like the A6, the only ones I like are the high-performance versions: ML63 AMG and ML550.

I visited the Lexus IS-F on the IAA in Frankfurt/Germany. From the cheap quality I was not surprised. The door Panel are as usual produced cheap plastic with Toyota from much. The decoration screens are only foils thus no genuine materials. The V8 engine get a bad tuned Toyota engine. The wheels/tires don`t have a good contact to the road. I don`t believe that a Lexus IS-F is on german motorways/Autobahn to be good driven with dry or wet road surely. Who of you lexus fans drove already times faster than 90mls? On german motorway/Autobahn is to be allowed to drive no without driver training faster than 100mls. The Lexus IS-F is suited evenly only for traffic light burn outs not more. I don`t would drive more than 75mls with this car it`s too dangerously. 165mls top speed is only marketing for the USA. Technical I see a lot large problems for the V8 engine, 8-speed automatic transmission, tire(linglong) and the brake. These construction units explode. Toyota can`t develop a manual transmission, since those is too unstable the car. Also starting from 90mls the front hood, flaps. fenders and the bumpers will flutter off.
In the end: The car is absolutely too expensive. The Lexus IS-F is for Lexus and Toyota a gold pit. Highly overprice the always cheap japanese Yen for a cheap Lexus car.

Can we just end this discussion already? Its not like the car is in showrooms now, for all we know this could be just some fantasy that the Toyota corporation is just dreaming of. "More than this, More than that". Calm down Toyota and do what you do best, make cheep soft bouncy pregnant/bloated underpowerd family cars with dull eye finesse styling.

The IS-F looks like a Honda Civic lovers wet-dream. Lexus appears to be catering to the ghetto crowd. I'm 100% sure that any self respecting Adult wouldn't get caught dead in that car. Look at the hood. The hood goes on, and on, and on for ever. And the side profile looks ungainly. But hey, whatever floats people boats. I can't see that car making any impression.

nicad, different strokes for different folks. I don't think any of us can say with confidence whether we'd pick the IS-F over the others are not. The lack of figures is really beginning to annoy me. If it had great power and acceleration, I would be eager to drive it. If it didn't, and was below-average for the class, I wouldn't be impressed.

I must say that in black, it looks pretty sweet. I still think the RS4 with the Titanium Package is the coolest-looking small sedan ever to hit the streets, but the IS-F makes a case for itself in darker colors (NOT the purple-blue). It looks good in white, too. Lexus is amazing at doing white.

Okay, before I keep rambling... I still can't say which I'd choose. I will try to drive the IS-F when it comes out, and report back.

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the (REPREHENSIBLE) Toyota/Lexus people.....

Check the new pictures of the silver IS-F on the Lexus website..the back plate says MCH 435. This may be an indicator of the true HP for the USA model.

Im getting really sick of idiots making fools of themselves on this site. I am a huge Lexus fan, ive owned them for years and now work for them and they are fantastic cars.but....

1. i wish they'd either shut up and release the car or tell us all the stats to give everyone something to talk/bitch about
