2008 Pontiac G8 pricing announced, V-8 to start under $30k

Pontiac's upcoming rear-drive 2008 Pontiac G8 sedan will start at $27,595 for a V-6 powered model and $29,995 for a V-8 powered GT model, the General Motors division announced today without going into further details of the pricing scheme such as optional equipment. The base pricing does not include destination charges.

The V-6 G8 is powered by a 3.6-liter engine that makes 261 horsepower and is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The high-performance GT version is powered by a 6.2-liter V-8 that makes 361 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, with a six-speed manual transmission becoming available shortly after the car goes on sale in the early months of next year.

My first car was a Grand prix and I hated it. I swore never to go back to pontiac but this car is Hot! The G series of cars look pretty cool.

89 Grand Prix Coupe. It died on me twice on the highway and the power steering went out. Scary moments when you want to steer the car to the breakdown lane lol.

1997-2003 GTPs were good cars too. 0-60 in under 7, 1/4 under 15, 30+mpg highway in the real world.

Hah! Another Aussie car to try and bail out Pontiac.

I like it though. They need to keep the Holden badge. They may sell more. Pontiac should position the Holden brand as a 'M' or AMG' wing of GM.

The car is made in Australia, the motor is made in American.

GM is one step ahead in this game, as their cars built on other shores truely are domestic for their respective markets, unlike Toyota here in the US. I believe the American consumer will embrace this in the coming years.

Well, if we are going to get nit picky, the V8 is actually produced in Mexico. I guess you could be talking about the V6. No idea where it is made, if it was the moon, it wouldn't bother me. Read on.

I know the V8 should be very good, but still, a 6.2 V8 and only 361hp. Do we really need an engine this big for a car like this? Couldn't they get the same numbers from a smaller engine?

Smaller isn't always better. This cars going to get 28-30 HWY MPG where all of the higher HP smaller V8's in smaller cars barely get 20. The higher HP Corvette gets 18 City 28 Hwy.

I love the new M3, but I don't think it gets as good of mileage as the 500 HP Z06 Corvette.

This Pontiac G8 is very very good. You can tuned the V8 to serios 430HP!!!
Note: The japanese Lexus IS-F has not the some competition but not for 30K Bucks!!!! Forget the Lexus IS-F it doesn`t have a six-speed manual transmission! A 8-speed automatic transmission is only for silly Lexus driver!

i agree, can you imagine what the tuners would be able to do with that engine, like a supercharger or something. i read edmunds review of the australian variant it sounds pretty good, GM is really turning around

I love the rawness of the G8, thats a car i know will have my heart pounding every time i press the pedal. Im dreaming of the sounds it makes with that huge v8

The CTS is great too, it just gets really expensive fully loaded. The 3.6 DI optioned out gets close to 50K. 20K less I can smoke any decent performing car out there.

Its going to be just like the Charger and Magnum which have awesome hi performance versions that no one wants. Every rental company and cheap asshole is going to buy the hell out of the V6s and drive down the coolness factor of this car to that of most any other domestic product. Every time I see a Magnum V6 with $5k worth of bling attached I thank God I didn't end up buying an SRT8. That would piss me off beyond belief. I would buy one in a second if GM would not allow fleet sales and would eliminate the V6. Call me vain but I have no interest in buying a rental car.

Charger and Magnum are produced in higher volume. I doubt GM would give G8s as fleet vehicles. They are built in Australia, so I don't think GM will import them to give to fleets. It doesn't look like that's the plan.

The G8 will simply have the same progress that the G6 and GTO did, which is not impressive at all.

The design of this car is outdated, smaller engines out there produce more power than this. Will be gas thirsty like the GTO. So I have no hopes in it to succeed.

A better move for GM was to bring the name Holden to the state, just like Ford did with Jaguar, but not to follow what Ford did to Jaguar though and ruin the car.

And how do you know this? Are you Pontiac's sales forecaster?

Neither the G6 (which wasn't outsourced from Holden- I don't know why you put it in here) nor the GTO were hyped like this car. The G8 is a volume seller, but it has high style, a great interior and a superb engine. It doesn't look as bland as the GTO. It will sell.
