New Audi A4 Avant renderings

Now that the new Audi A4 has been launched we can look forward to the Avant wagon version being revealed in just under twelve month’s time. Audi will be going with a sportier profile than in previous versions, with the key difference being a less steeped tailgate and a sloping profile at the rear. The front of the car will undoubtedly share the same face as the sedan, while the character line along its flanks will stretch out to newly shaped taillights at the rear.

They're going to change the taillamps, but otherwise, I'm sure it will be very good-looking. I love the A6 Avant- that's a sexy wagon if there ever was one. The new A4 looks very promising as an Avant.

I think they look better than most, but not as good as the older ones.
And its not just that the newer models "look Japanese". But it comes down to why the Japanese cars don't look as good.
(or, given that the Lexus RX300 was a duplicate of the Benz ML320 to within 1" in every dimension, why did it look like a bug in comparison?)

The problem is the tiny glass area. The older Audis (and especially Benz) wagons had huge expanses of glass, although not as much as a Range Rover, which probably topped the "Functional, but Elegant" scale.
We know that much of Japanese design is by accountants, and even though glass is cheap, steel is still cheaper.

Many Japanese vehicles look hideous because of mis-proportioned mixes of slim glass with wide metal panels (look at the tail end of some Japanese mini-vans ... they're grotesque!)

But Japanese poor taste didn't bother me ... until the Germans started copying them. I think the '02 era S6 Avant was the top of wagon design and style, and haven't seen anything that looks better, let alone even as good.

Does anyone else feel that Audi design's efforts to follow current trends is not bringing as good of results as when they were setting the trends?

Japanese? You're entitled to your opinion, but I don't see it. First of all, the only Japanese wagons sold in North America are from Subaru and of course the tall wagons ("cute utes") which have very ungainly dimensions and horrid driving dynamics. Aside from a loaded Subaru, I have no idea what Japanese vehicle you could directly compare to an Audi A4 Avant.

And if sales are any indication, the B8 is another step in the right direction for Audi. There is no doubt that this is the best A4 yet.
