New B8 Audi A4 driven by Autocar and it's very impressive

Autocar got its hands on a new B8 A4 3.2 FSI. Needless to say, they were very impressed with the car. Many people say it looks just like the current B7 form and, to an extent, they are correct. However, the little improvements that Audi has made over the B7 have created a vastly improved A4. So much improved, in fact, the Audi comes in near the top of the class which includes the BMW 3-series, Mercedes-Benz C-class and Lexus IS.

The car looks better than the slightly understyled A5 on the exterior. The wheel arches provide a distinct sporty character to the car and when combined with the 12 LEDs in the headlights, the car is clearly recognizable as an Audi, day or night.

The interior is obviously the best in class when compared to the cheap plastics found in the C-class and the spartan BMW look. The A4 gets the A5 and A6 dash with excellent ergonomics and materials.

The rear seatroom has grown tremendously thanks to Audi's increased wheelbase so rear passengers no longer feel trapped and most importantly......

this new Audi A4 exhibits extreme grip and resitance to understeer thereby making it a vastly improved driver's car over the B7 version.

When you combine aggresive exterior styling with unique LED running lights, a best in class interior with excellent materials, ergonomics and feel, increased rear-legroom for rear passengers, and vastly improved driving charactersitics such as the resistance to understeer and a competitive price when compared to the 3-series and C-class.....you have yourself a car that will sell in droves.

This B8 platform is the base for the A5, the new A4 as well as the upcoming Audi A6, A7 and A8 as well as Q5 platforms.

Audi has a very bright future directly ahead and when DSG is implemented in all models from the A3 where it is currently available up the line to the A4, TT, A5, A6, A7, A8, Audi will be on an even bigger roll.

This is just the formula Audi needs if it is to leapfrog Mercedes-Benz within the next 4 years in sales.

This is the first Audi implementation of the new 2.0 tdi with 140 hp. Same power as the old one, but with better emissions and MPG.

The 3.2 does 0-62 in 6.2 so 0-60 in about 6.
I looked at the B7's mpg and emissions - the new model has way better emissions (drops by about 30 g/km) better mpg (up by 4 UK mpg) and is still faster and more powerful!
How do they do that?

The review also says they're pretty certain that you should replace your E90s with this.

I assume you're kidding. It says the new A4 is good enough to warrant checking one out before automatically replacing your E46 with an E90. So either you're kidding, or you can't read.

Oh well I'm so sorry I misread next time I'll check everything with you before I post.

The article wasn't exactly a journalistic gem.
And if you think about it, saying "Don't automatically buy an E90" does seem to indicate that it's just as good if not better.

no, saying "don't automatically purchase an E90, at least check the Audi out" doesn't say it's better than an E90, imply it's better than an E90, or anything regarding the E90. What it says is "if you have an older BMW and would never have considered the Audi because it didn't drive like a BMW, at least check the new one out before you just buy an E90 because you might just like it enough to get one."

"Handsome, well-equipped and competitively priced against rivals, on first impressions the new A4 seems to be the most convincing reason yet not to make the default choice of buying a BMW 3-series."

This is close enough for me, JRob. I love the 3 Series coupe and would buy it over an A5, though not an S5. On the other hand, I'd take the new A4/S4/(upcoming) RS4 sedan over any 3 Series sedan. The looks just make it for me.

caltrans, you're missing the point. I'm not saying the Audi isn't great, I'm sure it is. What I said was the article isn't a comparison, and "check out the Audi before you automatically buy the E90" doesn't say either is better, just that they're both good enough to consider. It in NO WAY said "the review also says they're pretty certain that you should replace your E90s with this", which is what Rupert said. Nor did it say EITHER CAR was better than the other, or equal, or anything, because it WASN'T A COMPARISON TEST. All it said was "check them both out before you buy". I can't believe some of the things people get flamed for on here. Ruper says something completely asinine and I'm the one defending myself? Ridiculous. Remove the Audi-colored glasses for a second and reread what I and the article actually said, pretending that you're not biased towards Audi and not just defending another Audi guy.

The new A4 is now as roomy as the current E90, not quite as fast or even close and I should buy this over a 335xi for what reasons? oh the important subjective interior ...

On the other hand, I think it is good for Audi to build a nicer A4 model. Hopefully, it will allow for better competition between the models.

Over a 335xi of course not, but in Europea we still get the 330 which competes with this perfectly.

No my friend

You buy the S4 over the 335xi

The 3.2 A4 competes with the 330i/xi

Overall very good car, even though the MB has been my favorite - lights are the best thing about the exterior, but the interior, though very good, is getting TOO many buttons
GOOD CAR!!!

GermanNut The article doesn't mention anything about Audi having a better interior than BMW or Mercedes or about the "dynamic superiority" of the new Audi vs BMW or Mercedes. Better than the old Audi A4 doesn't mean "best in class". Next time post the real article instead of your ridiculous interpretation of it.

Wow, these pictures are incredible- it looks GORGEOUS. Just what I thought. The press pictures were utterly underwhelming... but it will look like it costs twice its price when you see it in person.

Obviously, the interior looks amazing, also. I like it more than the A5's because of its different use of trim.

I just can't get over how good it looks. And I don't think this one even has S-Line.
