Fresh New Look for 2008 Jaguar X-Type

Jaguar’s S-TYPE replacement, the new XF, hits the road from early next year, and so the X-TYPE has undergone minor reconstructive surgery to keep the car up to pace with its big brother’s fresh new family face - keeping it savoury for the 2008 model year. The new-generation X-Type hosts new features both inside and out, including the introduction of an automatic transmission mated to its 2.2-litre diesel unit.

With a total of over 500 components having received significant revisions in the new car, the X-TYPE ‘retains all the original car’s strengths, and adds some new ones of its own’. Namely, the model range now boasts the mating of a six-speed automatic transmission (featuring the one-touch control of Jaguar Sequential Shift) with the firm’s existing high-performance 2.2-litre diesel engine.

The introduction of the 2.2-litre diesel automatic version is a first for Jaguar, much like the addition of an estate model to the brand in 2004. The new mating produces ‘an exceptional blend of performance and refinement’ with combined fuel consumption figures of 41 mpg (compared to the manual’s 47 mpg) and performance remaining good. The 0-60 mph time increases marginly from 8.7 seconds in the manual to 9.5 in the automatic. Top speed decreases from 134 to 129 mph, while CO2 figures increase from 159 to 184 g/km.

Being Autospies, his X-Type re-fresh is bound to bet negative comments on its age, how it looks, how the competition is so far ahead of it, its based on the Mondeo etc. etc.

However, I've always thought the X-type was a decent car, nice to drive and striking in the looks department.

And I must say, I like the changes they've made. At first I thought the grille was a bit odd, but it's pure Jaguar and quite handsome actually.

Well there, probably the only positive comment you are likely to see on this page.

My Grandmother and Father own Jaguar X Types. While I love the wood used in these cars, I absolutely hate how it drives and feels. This new version actually makes the car less elegant.

Agreed...

Looks have never been an issue with the X-type, it (to many) looks exactly as a compact Jaguar should - taunt, tight and feline.

But the over-all driving experience could be better, as could the NHV.

this jaguars biggest problem is the car that it is based on, everyone sees this car as just a ford, its nice looking, nice interior, and it looks like a jaguar, but people just look at it as a ford

Interesting, I had to do a double take because the front actually looks more like the XJ now (which is a good thing). The only thing I didn't like about the X-Type when I drove it was it felt much smaller and cramped than a 3-series, and I didn't like that.

I understand Jaguar wants to keep a 4 car line-up and as such they are unlikely to do away with this abomination until such time as that additional vehicle is ready, but really hurry it up. It will be interesting to see what evolves.

Given Jaguar's sales structure, it is the antithesis of sensible to build a replacement for this car, and entirely understandable why they want to move up market. That is what the portfolio models are hinting toward. I would imagine that we will see more of such things from Jaguar.

Possibly, but I'm not understanding where this vehicle was such a dismal failure.

My local Jaguar dealer has had very little difficulty at all moving these sexy lil' run-abouts.

(I just sold my XJ8/PV this summer so I was there quite often)

Granted most of the one's I see are driven by semi-affluent elderly females or fashion conscious trust-fund babies.

Why have they taken the leaper off the hood? It flushes down any last trace of Jaguar DNA from the X-Type.

Why are they taking leapers off of all of the cars? The XJ still needs it.
