Spy Shots: 600hp BMW M5 twin-turbo spotted again

Probably a cost saving measure I imagine. The M6 and M5 share the same engine and the M3's engine basically is an 8 cyl offset of the V10.

It's easier to add turbos and external plumbing rather than upping the displacment of an already high revving tight tolarance engine like the ones in the M's.

Cant wait to see it though. I hope they fix the front facade...I agree it looks strange.

Now BMW finally have a car that almost could competes with the AMG SL65/CL65/S65.

I, for one, drive in the real-world, where I appreciate performance for what it does to keep my vehicles in control/out of harms way.

I agree, Just think if these cars had the power of their predecessors 10 years back, combined with todays technology in the engines, fuel economy ratings would be great. Hell ir a 270 hp nissan altima can hit 30 mpg on the highway, think of what an older maxima with 200hp would do with this technology on top of being much lighter. My little 85 325e is only about 121, althought I have a chip intake and exhaust so I give it about 135hp, as it is a low reving engine, and the chip bumps the rev limiter to 5,300 rpm. any way the car is quite quick, much more so than the numbers would suggest, and it will smoke all of those smaller more powerful cars its size. Why, because all cars now days are fat overweight pigs. they need to go on a diet, then they wouldn't need 270 hp to do what a 200hp car did some years back. Take for example the Ford f150. 300hp and slow. about 9 seconds 0-60 while the older 245hp lightning would do it in 7 seconds.

I-10 between San Antonio and El Paso. I don't even see what the point is in having speed limits out there....there's nothing but desert all around you for most of that stretch; you're lucky to find a gas station. They supposedly increased the speed limit out there to 80mph.

Funny, I recall many stating that the Japanese resorted to turbo-charging because they didn't know how to properly design larger displacement engines, and now that BMW is doing it all's well...

what are you talking about, and why....that doesnt even make sense the v6 in the g37 is very much the size of a small v8, and produces the power of one, why would anyone say something like that about japanese engines, wow how illogical

The one I belong to scoffs at BMW owners and calls them 'Big W's' (Big W**kers).

You only see Porsche, Bentley and Maserati in the heated car parks.

This one time a white M5 owner pulled up and we asked him why he didn't buy a Maserati instead.

He looked embarrased and said 'Yeah, that would be nice, but I couldn't quite stretch to one"

I replied: "Looks like it, every new-money douche has a M5"

Needless to say we never saw him again.

Come to think of it, it's quite sad how we at the club are so petty that we openly judge and discriminate against seemingly nice people just because their cars are lower on the prestige scale.

Ha-ha......BMW chasing just little old VW's 580HP RS6.......playing catch up.

The RS6 is apparently underrated (it has more than 600hp--that's what I've heard), so BMW will have a hard time playing catch-up if they're really doing this to copy the RS6.

amazinBimmer, of course, when the RS6 comes out with a 600hp RS6, it's a piece of crap that can't do anything. But when BMW--the God of Gods--copies them shortly after with a twin-turbo M5, it's the best sedan ever to come into existence. And we don't even know if it exists yet! How do we know it's not the next-gen M5 (on the real next-gen platform) undergoing testing?

While I am not completely convinced that there will be a turbo-charged M car, I can see the reason, the new M3 V8 and M5/6 V10 are both high strung, high revving engines but you need to be in the upper RPM range for the engines to shine. I don't think anyone would argue the fact that both engines could use a little more low end torque to satisfy the American market where you will rarely get to explore the 8K plus redline in the upper gears. Turbo charging is a quick fix for this as there will/should be gobs of torque with a couple of blowers, just look at the N54 in the 335. Many disagree with me, but the E39 M5 was just about perfect IMO, gobs of low end torque, great handling and a beautiful body.

The E39 was an amazing car. The E60... seems a bit much. I would still buy one, though. It just doesn't make sense for me; I'd want my sedan (winter car) to be AWD, so that gives me the S6 and RS4. I would want my convertible to be RWD.

Those two vents left and right of the license plate are fake, obviously a photoshop job. Notice the drivers side so-called scoop actually cuts into the crease while the one on the left does not cros the crease. Looks like a fabricated story to me, although I wouldn't be surprised to see the M3/5/6 gain some power to keep up eith the competition and have an edge.

I hope the new M5 isn't turbocharged. Audi has been turbocharging their cars for years- and it's a signature. I love the new RS6. But I don't want BMW to do the same to the M5, simply because it doesn't need it. The "M" philosophy is not power, power, power, but weight, weight, weight. Or at least it should be! Why don't they just lower the weight of the current model and keep the same engine?!

Let me add: that is true engineering. It's what Audi did with the new A4 and TT, and they don't really need new engines. It's the little things like this that just make me think BMW is losing it. This car will be a rocket... but it won't be much fun. That's how I see it. I'd rather have an RS6, because it is unabashedly turbocharged and makes the most of it. This car seems like an afterthought... because it is!

One more thing- how long do you think it takes BMW to bolt on a pair of turbochargers? People have known that the RS6 would be twin-turbocharged for at least a year now, so of course BMW is responding to it.

I would NOT take any maserati over the M5. The maseratis are way overated. I would take a Jaguar XK type R over any maserati. The M5 is so much more of a street legal race car than a maserati. No BMW's at the country club, that is right! My grandpas country club is full of cadillacs! Lots of old people taking it slow. No porsches either!

The new breed of Maserati's are NOT over-rated.

I'd have one just for the styling and the engine note.
