Land Rover Discovery 3 named Britain’s most practical 4×4

always loved the classic designs of the land rovers. In today's world of mundane and generic design, they certainly stand out.

If practical means both gas-guzzling and over-weight then so be it!

We need a clean diesel in the US for the LR3. (I know the UK has a diesel that gets 30mpg but is it clean?)

All that torque from the diesel can surely haul this beast around, yet, it still wont have much of a sprint to it.

Alert the press, BRITAIN chose a LAND ROVER as the most practical SUV. No sh*t. Like they'd pick anything else. To them, Jaguar is the world luxury standard.

That joke aside, I think the LR3 is AWESOME. Practical? NO! 99% of the people who by them drive down 5th Avenue to buy Chanel (well, here in the states, may be different in the UK, but for the most part, I highly doubt it). There are many more 'practical' choices.

But if you want the best, most luxurious, most capable SUV, buy a Land Rover - any of them.

If you want practical and off road capable, get a stripped Wrangler.

I love the Range Rover... if it came with the TDV8 over here, and was reliable, it would be the perfect SUV.

The (former) wife made me buy a 2004 Range Rover, and it was the single worse automotive experience of the 27 vehicles I've owned in my life.

Note: I was never fond of the rear end that looks as though there's something weighing it down... UGLY BOX!

The LR3 is a great car, but as others have said, it has terrible reliability (they all do).

And it's not like they had much of a choice there. It comes down to the LR2, LR3, RR Sport, RR and Defender. So they chose the one with seven seats.

too bad the hyundai suvs have more cupholders.

the whole poinr of the commercial was to say "our car is better, but the LR3 has more cupholders". Also, to everyone who commented: we've got an LR3 also and it was an early one so the little niggles were there as in any car, but after that, no faults at all. also, we get 13 MPG!!! The TDV6 doesn't have many filters and its really inefficient for a diesel, but it would be nice if the TDV8 was sold in CA with bluetec in the LR3, but lose the name. Discovery 3 sounds so much better than LR3.

I have a '06 LR3 HSE and it is great truck. It is versatile, good power (combined 17 MPG! over 40 miles a day commute), lots of luxury, very safe and can go anywhere. Sure, I'd love to see Land Rover bring over diesels as an option. Don't worry, I think they will in a year or two.

I purchased an '05 nearly 3 years ago, and after 40k miles and no problems, I think it's a great truck. We had owned 2 Discos previously, and they were awful. But the LR3 has been as reliable as any vehicle we've ever owned, and it is entirely practical, as we use it for hauling. Highway mileage is consistently 17mpg, as reported above. If the TDV8 ever makes it to the States, I'd give it a go.

If I ever own one I hope to have the same experience. I've heard horror stories about the '05s
