What vehicle were you the happiest to get rid of?

I wouldn't call it a nightmare... but quite easily the most mediocre car I have ever had was my '95 Acura TL. I had replaced my Vigor with it- and they were like night and day. The TL was utterly characterless. No fun to drive, boring interior, equally boring exterior. And I was stuck with it for a five-year lease! HELL!

Then I replaced it with my '00 A6 2.7T... that was the revelation.

I swear the first few Acuras were the best the brand ever sold here. The first Legend was awesome in its day.

BLAH BLAH BLAH, the same story every time meanwhile in 95 Audi's were busy catching on fire. LOL

1995 mazda millenia and 2000 mazda millenia s.These cars are a nightmare ,will never buy mazda ever in my life what i replaced in the 95 ,front suspension 2 distributors,check engine light almost every other day,o2 sensor ,radiator, water pump , ac unit

mikey... if I owned two Acuras and then moved on to bigger and better things, you should be able to realize that I'm simply not biased against their cars. But they're incompetent! The new MDX is great, I'll give them that. But the rest of their models are just sad, especially the RL. They really should bring back the RSX.

The RL is sad? The only way its sad its how few they sell. Otherwise its one of the most under appreciated cars on the market.

One of my engineers was so happy when his Acura got totalled off in an accident.
It had to go back to the dealer for rust repairs before it was a year old! Extremely poor build quality (that was 15 years ago)

If you own an Envoy XL, why did you post a pic of a non-XL Envoy?

As for the XL, my mother owns one. She has over 70,000 miles on it and has had zero problems with it. It doesn't drive the best, but unsafe, not even close.

It's not HIS car any more, so does it matter? He USED to own it, and just looked up a picture of the Envoy on the Web.

Did you have reliability problems, or was it just overall dissatisfaction?

Same question as S4. All I ever hear about Land Rover is reliability problems. But I'd love to get the Range Rover Sport based on looks alone. I love that car.

It was more just little things going wrong constantly:

1. Rear Spring Issues (Suspension Problems Galore)

2. Dash Board rattles/Electric Issues.

3. Generally Crappy Build Quality.

We only kept it for 20 months, I just could take any more.

I heard the '03s were a nightmare...and very slow until they upgraded to the Jag engines...shame, its an awesome truck when it wants to work.

1997 Mazda 626 - had it for 2 years - It had a great color scheme(white & beige 2 tone).

The hood felt like it was made out of industrial grade steel; must have weighed atleast 30lbs. I bought it at 14k miles and only put about 30k miles extra. I had to replace about 6 cv boots; the radiator hoses twice; the windows rolled down at a snail pace; the final blow was when the O2 sensor, maf sensor, and a cam sensor died all within one week....I had to pay $1,200 dollars to fix the junker; and it sounded like a nascar afterwards.

2004 Nissan Maxima SL.

Initially was a sporty sedan with great characters. But over few months I realize it had huge flaws. Dash board rattled, glove box was repaired. Passenger seat rattled. Lumber support broke in driver's seat. 1 Headlight blew out. Front shocks replaced at 15,000 miles. Rear suspension began to sag around 30,000. Wipers stopped working in middle of winter storm. Heating system broke down in the next winter.

Overall, POS.

Now, I own a 2006 GS300 AWD. Amazing car.

The GS is an incredible vehicle. I test drove a GS and seriously considered getting it. I got an LS instead, but I love the GS. I hope to get one someday.

Mine was a 2000 Range Rover which I bought knew.

The climate control system refused to operate properly. The engine, however, never had any problems. The air suspension would "bow down" while sitting at traffic lights sometimes.

Basically the climate control issues lead to moisture in the cabin which lead to a moldy smell and I am too OCD to have it smell like anything other than leather.

I'm a sick person and still want one just like it though....as a second car.

I've never been happy to get rid of a car. I always learned from my brother's and sister's mistakes when they would buy cars. In fact, I've only owned one Honda and two Lexus' and have loved all of them. The worst car I can remember is my sister's 1989 Mitsubishi Mirage. That was a horrid, horrid car. Good crap, that thing was slower than a bicycle and lasted about 1/4 as long. I remember how relieved she was when she unloaded that pile of crap. Well, an illegal alien stole it, but she got insurance for it and all was good.

Well, he lived by us, stole it and stupidly parked it in his driveway. We told him to give it back or we would call the cops. A few hours later, he was gone and the cops said they had no information on him which means he was illegal.

The day I let go of my Daewoo and upgraded to my Kia was the happiest day of my life. Now I aspire to upgrade to a Corolla real soon. Saw a great deal on a pre-owned '98 model, no leather but I'll make do...

Yep, you're all correct about the Corolla. No complaints really but I was definitely happy to trade in my '96 Corolla for my B6 S4. That Corolla...got me thru high school and college. No problems, just no fun..not that it was meant for that.

2000 Lincoln LS V8. I actually really liked the styling and the performance at the time. I think it was 7.5 seconds to 60. Not bad, but would be considered a little sluggish today. The rear window motor broke 3 times. Then at like 45000 miles there was a minor transmission problem. But it was a lease and I was happy to give it back. Oh yea, it was trash in the winter. I remember almost getting stuck in the middle of an intersection, and not making it up the driveway a couple times. Other than that I could say I've been pretty lucky with my cars.

I bought a '98 Honda CRV for my significant other once. What a piece of $h*t! It broke down and left us stranded twice. It was so under powered, it couldnt keep speed up a hill, the driving position was horrible, window wipers missed half the windshield and the transmission was always hunting. That car was our first and last Honda. That car made me fully understand how a bad experience with a brand can turn you off for life and why some people talk bad about my favorite brands. I tell everyone I know how bad my CRV was and my experience with honda when we talk about buying new vehicles.

I had a minor accident a year ago, and had to rent a chevy malibu, that has was one unsafe vehicle, when i needed the breaks it would lock the left front wheel and it would steer into that direction, the suspension was awful, the interior was ugly, and i was very very happy that this would only last a couple of days until i got my car back.....

2001 A6 2.7T

Was in the shop every couple weeks. Biggest POS Ive ever owned.

Glad to you hear you guys didnt get any gremlins on your 2.7T's, but mine was complete nightmare. EVERYTHING fell apart on mine, tons of engine problems, 2 blown transmissions, rotors and brakes were toast every 6,000 miles, headlights and tailights going out constantly, heated seats never worked, buttons on steering wheel were PEELING off, the list goes on and on. Everytime I got the car back from service, something else would go wrong. It was singlehandedly the worst ownership experience Ive ever had.

I went from my least-favorite car (Acura TL) to an A6 2.7T, also, and loved it. Not a single problem other than a faulty headlight washer cap.

1994 Ford Taurus, 130,000 miles on it, got it working from a dealer, but after 6 months it started:
-engine rebuilt=2(twice)
-transmission rebuilt=3
-head gasket=1
-alternator=2
-battery=1
-brakes&rotors=1
-ac&heater=2
-tire=1

Maybe the problem was not as much in the car as in the mechanics that "solved" the issues; I mean, the trans and engine rebuilds several times in less than one year only gets me to HATE mecanics. I had some sort of warranty (paid extra to get it from dealer) and things work out nicely, I didn't get charged for any rebuilds, just the other stuff ... oil, brakes, cheaper stuff. Still, it caused a lot of time lost, towing and getting to work late (and taking the train for the next 1-2 weeks while in shop, every time when towed).

I had to visit 5 mechanics to find one (a russian guy) able to fix the heat in the car, I was freezing my ass at 0-10 degrees just cause every single mechanic told me there is nothing wrong(after checking the car), it's just not working, but they have no idea why. Guess what? It was just the switch/broken/$20 part. For $20 I had to drive whole winter with me and the windshield frozen.

A '96 Mercury Mystique (known as the Mistake, by the repair shops). That car always needed repairs prior to, during, and/or after a road trip. It was terrrible. I had to turn the A/C off when in drivethru restaurants because the car would vibrate nonstop and you could not only feel it, but you could see the dashboard rattling. I could write a book about the problems I had with that car...Oh yeah, it had a nice paint job.

Almost forgot, problem areas with that mystique that eventually had between 78,000 and 123,000miles on it while it was mine:

_rebuilt transmission
_replaced torque converter(separate from trans. rebuild)
_replaced oxygen sensors multiple times.
-replaced valve cover gasket
-engine was replaced right after I got the car
-CV joints went bad
-underbody splash guard fell off car

Well, that's all I can remember right now.

2001 Isuzu Trooper.

Not single problem with it. Decent gas mileage for an SUV. Very, very off-road capable (tested it to the limits) this is beyond just the 'Jeep of Japan'!

So, why did I rejoice when I dumped it? (Only after 5 months of ownership):

-Never had an SUV, missed driving a sport sedan
-It was manual...ugh...like driving an International Flat-Bed
-BUTT UGLY..wish it looked like a Land Rover.

Seems like all the issues you had with your vehicle were a direct result of simply buying a vehicle you didn't want in the 1st place.

We all make mistakes.

with out a doubt the 2000 Nissan X-Terra.

In 48,000 miles
- two set of brake rotors and one caliper not cover under warranty.
- new transmission (30 days after warranty expired)
- new AC compressor
- two sets of tires
- new shocks

Other disappointing rides have been:

2002 Lexus RX - more electrical problems than I can count. Left us twice on the side of the road.

2000 Lexus LS - Mechanically sound as a rock, but the leather was wearing out in a year, and the paint started fade and peel after 3 years.

I learned my lesson with Japanese cars we now get rid of them in less than 36 months.

Example of how different an experience can be - my wife's '02 RX has been going strong for almost 6 years without a single issue.

That's why you hate on Lexus 009...or did you just make that up? Kidding...

The RX was always a problem child from the first week
The LS was fine but after 3 years people wanted to know what happened to it because it showed so much age. The odd thing was it was garage kept as well.

Definitely the 1985 Pontiac 6000 SUX (I mean STE) that I bought in law school after my previous car - an '82 Camaro - died. In the span of 6 months, on a car with less than 35,000 miles on it, the oil pump needed to be replaced, the electrical system shorted out and, finally, the transmission started to go. The only good news is that I bought it from a dealer who was a friend of my parents and he took it back for what I paid for it, less reasonable depreciation. That was in 1988 and I've never purchased an American car since . Oh, and the Camaro was definitely the second worst - almost as unreliable (the only time I've ever had an accelerator pedal fall off), but at least I looked good driving it!

In '82, no. But living in Michigan, it's surprising I didn't.

1994 Mitsubishi Galant

The worst car I've ever owned! I guess shouldn't have expected much, first year production car and a Mitsubishi!!

Anyway it was in the shop about 30 times for warranty repair in 32K miles. The tranny went bad at 23K miles, a couple of window motors went bad around the same time, the gauges would flicker constantly at night, the power antenna went bad on 3 occassions, both driver's side door upper door frames came deformed from the factory. By 20K miles both doors would squeak constantly due to this and dealership or Mitsubishi would not fix it!
And of top of all this the dealership service was below poor!

I swore I would never buy another Mitsubishi because of that experience.

Mine was a '90 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais S.

I bought it for $4900 when I was 17 (in 1995) from a Saturn dealership. My first car... It was a Quad4 bee-yatch!

In the 12 months that I owned it:

6 sets of front brake pads
1 set of front brake calipers
5 headlight bulbs
Trunk latch spring broke
New tires
Wheel alignment 3 times
2 fuel injector assemblies
Air-conditioning recharge
3 front passenger side wheel bearings

Luckily I had been smart enough to buy the extended warranty. All of the repairs (except the brake pads and the tires) were made for $50 each. Eventually they even refunded me the money for the pads because they realized it was a problem with the calipers and should have been fixed the first time.

I traded it in for a '94 Camaro Z28 to the same dealership. That was also crap. But I was 18 and it got me lots of trim. :)

The worst part was that they gave me $2500 in trade for the Calais and put it back on their lot for the same price I'd paid a year earlier.

I've had 12 sets of shoes on my Olds Calais in 5 weeks , just kidding , I never had that much work done on any of my cars since I had my licence ,all GM by the way

That's your fault buddy that is why I don't buy used cars unless it's with cash. It is obvious it was traded in for a reason and the sad thing is it's ususally the second hand buyer that gets stuck with the issues after the warranty is up.

1975 Chevy Monza. A subcompact with a 262 cubic inch V8. It was the 1st year of production and probably rushed into production as a result of the 1974 oil embargo and I got one of the very first.
What an absolute piece of shit that was. On our 1st trip out of town the engine actually came off its mounts and the fan blade went into the radiator.. It only got worse.

I had a 1981 Chevy Chevette that I got rid of for a 1982 200SX. I was so happy to get rid of the Chevette. I then got rid of the 200SX for my first brand new car (a day I regretted). I bought a 1995 Dodge Neon. 22 months later I traded it in for a 1997 Nissan Hardbody. The 200SX was the best car I have ever owned. The Hardbody was the second. After buying the Hardbody, I vowed never to buy anything but a Nissan since. That didn't last and I ended up trading the Nissan pickup in for a 2000 Tundra in 2002. I traded that in 2 years later for a 2004 Nissan Armada. I have bought a Maxima, Z and G35 since then. I will never buy anything but a Nissan again.

1995 Chrysler Town and Country...was ok until 50k miles

after that, never owned an American POS again. Been happy with Euro/Japanese brands.

although my Honda Odyssey has ahd some tranny issues, but between our negotiating with Honda of America, its warrantied until 150k miles. and its been thru 5 tranny's so far. other than that, i cant complain.

1996 Mustang GT, 4.6L, 5 speed...
Shit loads of torque, and that's about it. Interior made by Mattel, and the back seat was only good for people with no legs. It was loud, rode as if the rear axle was welded to the body. It handled like a NY city bus. The transmission and was better suited for a riding mower. Leather seats cracked after just few weeks....but boy - it got me a lot of white trash pussy...LOL

Surprisingly My 2004 Mazda RX8.Great car to drive,great handling. However I had 4 warranty claims and 2 recalls. It became a real pain after a while. My 06 Mini Cooper S has been much more reliable.

1993 Mazda MX-6.

Nice car. Looked good, great gas mileage, handled great for what it was.

But the damn paint quality was awful. I believe this was around the time of the switch to CFC paint, but it seemed like nothing could stop the roof from oxidizing.

The worst piece of shit ever... 2003 VW Jetta. The car was in the shop 16 times in 6 months for various problems including:
-Everytime a window was opened, it fell off the track into the door.
-The A/C condensation built up inside the system and grew mold.
-The mechanism that held the gas tank door shut kept breaking.
-The CD Changer chose whether to play the CD or not.

To top it off, the dealer NEVER admitted fault. Even when I tried to claim lemon status, VW had the regional manager of VW come to my dealer to inspect the car and he denied any of the faults were theirs. I hope they rot in hell.

My Mother had a 1990 SL500 (in about 2004), with low mileage, good condition, nice colour...we got rid of it after 3 weeks.

You would start it, drive off, and when you lifted off the accelerator, the engine died. Then the roof didn't work. Then neither did the windows. ANd it had no A/C.

Replaced it with a 1997 323 convertible which has been an absolute gem and still is (although one of the key blipper things has gone a bit mad).

My 89' Ford Probe. It was great performer since it was basically a Mazda 6 with a Ford logo on it but it had all kinds of electrical issues. I eventually traded that in for a 93' Isuzu Rodeo LS. Again, I loved that truck. But it had a bad transmission that three different mechanics could never get right. Eventually that trans gave up and that point so did I.

From that point on, I've learned to do much research on a car and its history. Even that can't completely help you since bad cars are born every minute, you just gotta be lucky and hope you don't get stuck with one.

The Ford Probe has nothing to do with the Mazda6.

A minor typo, the Probe shared its chassis and powertrain with the Mazda MX-6, not the 6.

1990 Honda Accord.

Worst vehicle by a longshot. Everything on it broke. When it rained, water dripped onto the passenger seat (or passenger) and the taillight assemblies filled with rainwater (and I had to get a hose to siphon the water out).

Not to mention horrible no-torque engine, non-existent brakes, and handling that was like a broken school bus.

My first car was a 1987 Honda Accord Lx-i. You could not kill this thing. Yes, water leaked thru the sunroof...the fuel injections were shot, the mufler fell off (and I just picked it up and put it in the trunk after giving up on the bunjee cord that was holding it up) and I couldnt shift out of 1st gear until I was going 20mph....but...it always started, and got me places, with 200k miles on it.

Drove really well though...

My current X5 4.8is is giving me pains with window regulators... Like every 6-8 months I've had to replace one of them.

And yes, it drives wonderfully...

Oh man, the 2007/08 BMW X5 4.8i is my favorite BMW to date. I love those things. I really want one.

is350, the current X5 4.8i and the last-gen X5 4.8is (which DaHarder owns) are two very different cars. It annoys me that they have the same engine size and people get them confused all the time- but the 4.8is was the "M" equivalent of the last-gen X5 and the 4.8i is simply the V8 model (replacing the 4.4i) for the current model.

The 4.8i is incredible. I think I'm going to get one for my wife.

Oh, I knew about the 4.8i and 4.8is, I was just stating my opinion on the X5. But seriously, my favorite SUV. Those are so attractive.

2001 Honda Civic...hated it, but for stupid reasons! Total rice racer and wanted a celica, cheap enough to soup up I figure. But parents figured a 4 door civic would be more "practical" so they bought me that instead. Plus 2001 was the start of that hideous design, wouldn't have minded a 2000, but parents didn't want to get me a used car. Totally HATED it!!! Pushed it hard as much as I could and just hoped it would die. Hated every minute of driving it. Kept it for a year and as soon as I had enough money traded it, no matter what my parents said!

Your parents forced you to drive a brand new car. Cry me a river.

Hands down, early 1990s Jetta. Really liked the looks of it. Bought it used and within a span of 3 months things started falling apart - problems with worn wheel bearings, gaskets, alternator, not to mention the dash was falling apart and the leather-wrapped shif knob was ripped at the seams.

I second that motion... My 1991 Jetta GLi had the looks and the pizazz. I spent 4k on it, my first car, put in over 3k on it in just one year in repairs. Too long ago to remember all the things that went wrong....

97 vw passat

'95 used acura integra - more an issue of being young and naive, and not getting it checked fully (found out much later that wire hangers were connecting the electrical system - apparently a mechanic paid to check out the vehicle had failed to find this)

'98 Lexus GS 300 - problems and maintenance beyond belief -

1. Had electrical problems with the rear taillight from day one, and after 6+ trips to the dealer, they could not fix it, and began charging $600 a pop to sort out the electrical system - to this day, still not fixed
2. Sunroof refused to shut ($1,000 to Lexus for some motor failure) at 50k miles
3. "Snow" mode turned on by itself, which did not allow acceleration or movement out of second gear (I cannot remember exactly, except that I was stuck with a car that did 0-60 in 7.5... minutes!), and did not disengage ($750+ to dealer) - problem at 60k miles or so
4. Radio bugged out/fried (the premium "Nakamichi" system) at around 60k miles..

I don't post very much Lexus-hate related stuff, but for a car that cost ~$50k in 1998 (a premium price at the time), I expected much better, and was severely disappointed (in addition to the crap driving dynamics of the GS)- will never, EVER get another Lexus as a few friends have mentioned electrical issues as well

Replace the transmission 5 times! Isn't there a point at which is it no longer worth it.

Hell to replace the transmission on my Jaguar 5 separate times would cost almost $50,000.00

At one point they thought it needed replaced and as I recall to do it would have cost $9,600.00 Luckily it only needed a $6 can of cleaner- and I have not had a problem with it since.

2000 Ferrari 360....hah..j/k! Never had any nightmares. I have to agree with M35 the early Acura Legends were nice. Classic looks. My worst experience was with a 1985 Toyota Corolla. Was a commuter and did not expect much. It would barely allow me to get from work and home before heating up in a puff of smoke. If I hit any traffic, would have to pull off the road...lol. Yes it was old.

2004 VW Touareg V8 (over $40,000 list back then)

Great power and handling BUT...

Blew camshaft oil plug with 40 miles on it on the way home from the new purchase - flatbedded back to dealer.

Various electrical problems constantly, error messages on the dashboard.

Had to have "stepper motor" replaced due to shudder in drivetrain.

Went for oil change and state inspection at 30,000 miles; dealer discovered it needed whole new front suspension to pass inspection (VW paid for it under warrantee so it was obviously not dealer trying to make unnecessary repairs).

Tried to trade it for an Audi, VW-Audi dealer wouldn't give even wholesale book value for it. Finally traded for BMW wagon (BMW dealer took it off my hands for wholesale value) and I was glad to see it go.

Aha, I knew it! Your Audi hate is deep-rooted! Well, that's an easy fix... go out and buy an RS4, and trade in your supposed "E39 M5."

1966 Lotus Elan (bought in 1972).
The greatest driving sports car on earth, BUT:
3 months out-of-service due to massive oil leaks.
Retractible headlights would go up-down, up-down when you click on the turn indicators (obvious short).
A broken throttle cable - to get home I threaded a string to the dual webers through the dashboard and I pulled the damn string to make the 5 miles to home..it actually worked!
Two of the front brake pads popped out when driving so very difficult to drive without brakes the 10 miles 'till home.
The car was so low that when I was in the right lane several cars never saw me and moved over and curbed me.
I sold the car after 1 year and have regretted it ever since. It would run circles around a Porsche 911 at the time on a curvy road driving it with only one hand on the steering wheel! Incredible handling, but it should since it weighed only 1400 lbs.

1999 ML430
I liked it - but not how much it eventually cost me.
It needed about 3 services a year, 1 of them a major service, and oftenly was in the middle of getting heaps of bumps and scratches. I traded it in for a 2002 735Li and was much happier. Though I would always take the opportunity to get the new ML500.

I never bought a bad car. I did had some problems with my 1994 BMW 730i (yes, the one with the V8) concerning the gearbox (an automatic): the torque converter jammed and blew up my gearbox. But I think it was a bit my fault, I constantly did burnouts and drove 200-220 kmh (which is about as fast as it can go)..

Great engine by the way, I wished BMW could bring back the small V8.

And my god it was beautiful and had the best interior EVER! The fit and finish is still unmatched today. Only Audi and some Mercs do better.

It is great, and the fit and finish is fantastic.
Couple of things - it's a high mileage, 1 owner car - he did a lot of long driving trips to Italy - and the leather in the back is quite worn.

First one replaced by a 4Runner V8 and second one by a 325Ci, stick. Both awesome.

My 1st wife came with an Austin Marina 4-door, complete with SU side-draft carbs and automatic transmission. What a lame excuse for a car! I tried to fix it to sell it, but couldn't repair things as fast as other features broke. It was a nightmare, but I eventually fixed everything, including body rust and re-painted it.
We celebrated the day we sold it for $1300.
I got her a '73 Volvo 145/245 to replace it, which turned out to be not much better mechanically (but very solid and comfortable)
