GM’s global sales up 4%, edges closer to Toyota

GM said today its global sales rose 4 percent to a record 2.38 million cars and trucks in the third quarter of 2007. GM said that its sales in Europe rose 15 percent while Latin America, Africa and the Middle East saw a 22 percent increase. GM sales in the Asia Pacific region rose 16 percent.

... and that's with their current line-up.

Once the Malibu hits, their U.S. sales should increase dramatically, as a truly believe that many Americans want to buy a nice/handsome/well-equipped domestic vehicle, but the 'pickings' have just been so few.

With the very nice (though somewhat pricey when optioned) Aura, and now the (the more value conscious) Malibu, they now have more than a fighting chance at getting those that will shy away from Toyota (reliability rep - tarnished), and Honda (the new Accord has been referred to as quite unattractive/ugly by more than a few shoppers I know).

You can't forget the Altima, Mazda6 and Passat, though... it's still tough in this class.

GM needs to prove to the public that the Malibu has just-as-good build quality and reliability as the Camry and Accord, or else the Malibu will end up just like the Ford Fusion and Pontiac G6, which were also supposed to demolish the Camry and Accord.

I think the new Malibu is not only significantly better than the G6 and Fusion, but is getting more press, as well.

Just remember sales doesn't always mean profits,but I wish GM well.
