Detroit 3 Demand Japan Be Labeled A Currency Manipulator
The Detroit 3 are launching a campaign to have Japan labeled a currency manipulator and to end what they say is an unfair subsidy for Japanese automakers.

The Detroit 3 claim that the artificially undervalued yen provides a $4,000 to $12,000 bonus for each vehicle imported from Japan. Competitors use the advantage to keep prices low or to fund additional product development, the Detroit automakers say.

They have made similar arguments in the past.

But there are some new developments, top economists from the Detroit 3 told reporters here today.

They say the dollar has been going down against other freely traded currencies but not against the yen — proof, they say, that the markets know Japan would intervene if the yen appreciated too much.

Yes, but you overtax Japanese cars and still losing ground. I hate to say this but is because our proudcts needs to be improved. Cadillac is the only one going in the correct direction.

Yonder you are correct. Have you all forgotten that tarriffs exist? American cars are much cheaper by comparison, so are replacement parts. Its the product that sucks. That's why they are losing.

The U.S. auto manufacturers are highly subsidised by the U.S. government/local governments with tax breaks, etc. The Japanese government is highly protectionist though. Then again, the U.S. highly subsidises agriculture causing farmers to over produce (because they get paid anyway) and then dumping the extra supply on foreign markets at a cheap price to where locals, who are already poor, then have no work because they can't compete with the prices; i.e. Haiti, Niger, etc.

The Japanese have been doing this for decades. It irks me when uninformed people praise the Japanese for offering "affordable cars for less money". If they only knew...

It's called unfair competition. I'm surprised this subject is treated so laxly by the economic community.

Bill, take an economics class. Japan's economy is struggling and has been for decades. The fact that US Auto makers use this as an excuse is like the kid who complains he isnt as good at basketball because his parents cant afford the new Jordan's.

Some here only cry foul when others are not fair to US, but enjoy the benefit when US is unfair to other countries. The whole world is unfair. WTO (World Trade Organization) is supposed to make it a fair game.
So don't cry. Appeal your case in WTO, not on internet.

The Honda motocycle company tried claiming marketshare with less than honerable ways to flood the market with Gold Wings and other heavy weight motorcyles years ago . They did suceed, for awhile . Those things were like door knobs , all over the place . They did manage to knock over the Triumph Motorcycle Company with help from Yamaha ,at least for awhile,anyway . But now look who's on top , Harley Davidson !!!A true American icon. I hope history repeats itself with the American "OWNED" auto companys reclaiming market share
