Audi A5 3.0 TDI V6 averages 37 mpg in test!

Why? Why? Why??? Is everyone just waiting for one person to make the first move and then we'll see a flood of diesels, or are they just so "once bitten, twice shy" about the diesel backlash of the 70s/80s.

They really are spending too much time putting a toe in the water rather than jumping it. (Okay, that was one too many cliches)

The 70's/80's diesels you refer to are strictly a GM fiasco. GM dieselized engines that were originally designed as gas engines instead of designing a proper diesel engine from scratch. Furthermore, diesels of that era did not benefit from today's high pressure common rail injection and other recent improvements aimed at cleaning up the exhaust and improving efficiency.
My guess is that, if Mercedes started selling its Vision C220 Bluetech in North America today, they could get full MSRP for every one of them for the first year or two.

TheSailor makes sense. I have a gasoline engine with coil over plug ignition and I had two ignition coils crap out in as many weeks -- this would have been impossible with a diesel.

This engine will be available in the states in the following vehicles:

Q7 (first)
A4 (second)
A5
Q5
A6

Don't expect them all at the same time but should be in that order.

Audi would definitely get a repeat order from me if the A5 arrives with a diesel by next spring.

congrats to Audi...germans do know their motors when it comes to diesels. No one one has answer tot hem on that aspect.

Hopefully they dont tarnish the appeal of the A5 by offering crappy options with this technology.

But it's slower. The 335d, which this car competes with, gets slightly lower mileage. They have very similar performance, but I can't remember the exact times.

Oh and BTW, for anyone who's wondering, the article clarifies that these are US figures. That's incredible. I would buy this over an S5 any day of the week.

Well... maybe not quite. But I would *probably* buy it over the S5.

They're not calling it Bluemotion--that's VW. But anyway, the Bluetec Audis will probably be developed for coming generations or mid-cycle updates.

What's the beef? Why do you have to be down on diesels when they're so obviously superior to gasoline engines? All it takes is a particulate filter.

I saw the Touareg with the 3.0TDI today.
(as well as the Dakar TDI and a new Jetta with the Passat's 2.0 TDI that's coming to the US soon)

I want an A6 with the V6 TDI, but I guess that's not coming..........
