2007 Lexus LS 460 L - Long Term Update

Here in the third quarter, however, we've noticed the car showing its age, just a bit. "After getting out of a fresher example of the Lexus LS 460 L last weekend, I noticed that our door panels creak every time you start accelerating and brake," noted one staffer. "I guess 13,000 miles will do that to you, but you would figure that this Lexus flagship would stay tighter longer."

Our news editor didn't get much help from the cruise control: "I gave the active cruise control a workout, and I still would take Mercedes-Benz's Distronic Plus over this system," he said. "The Mercedes system slows down to 0, while the Lexus quits at speeds below 20 mph. Just when you're closing in on the car in front and slowing down, the system gives up and leaves it up to you to quickly mash the brakes to bring the car to a halt. As a result, I find the M-B system more inherently 'trustable,' because I can count on it all the way down to a stop, unless the stop is very severe. The M-B is the future-the Lexus isn't quite there yet."

so what does all this have to do with the fact that this long-term LS has some quality control issues?

I wouldn't trust the S550 to slow all the way down to a stop. That seems like a trivial thing to argue when the exact same "technology for lazy drivers" argument is used to call the self-parking feature useless. Self-parking is just as easily both "useless" yet "the future" as Distronic.

I will say that the issue of the door panels creaking should be looked into and addressed. VERY uncommon/unheard of in a Lexus, especially the LS. If that happens to my car, I know I will raise an eyebrow with the Lexus service department.

things i hate about these reviews is if they had dealer services concerning the issues to rectify the problem. they usually never state, this case for example.

if this was a concern for the driver, did they take the time to go to the dealer and have the issue addressed. we kno Lexus offers superb service and i don't see an issue in either fixing the prblem or replacing the door panel to satisfy the customer.

every vehicle on the road today has little bugs that makes the "machine" not 100%, but thats the reason the vehicles come with warranties, for minor situations like this.

as far as the cruise...i am a skeptic about cruise controls. i personally dont like it as it makes the driver less aware. so for that reason, i find the article useless in this aspect.

You think they made that up? Lexus is not perfect, deal with it.

Stick with Lexus. A brain-donor like you wouldn't appreciate and doesn't deserve the pleasure of driving a Mercedes-Benz.

Spotty reliability and rude, indifferent customer service. And yet people continue to buy Mercedes-Benz. They must make excellent cars. Lexus relies almost solely on their reputation for reliability and customer service - the cars themselves are almost an afterthought.

Lexus is like a fat ugly broad with a great personality. Benz is like the high-maintenence supermodel with the bad attitude. I know which one i want. Mercedes-Benz is automotive arrogance at it's very finest.

houston:

you've never owned a mercedes (and i doubt you know many people who do). so how would you know why people buy them?

here are a few reasons: many of them are great looking cars, they have incredible engines available, they have leading safety innovations since the 1950s (airbags, ABS, ESC, crumple zones, etc), they offer incredible blends of luxury and performance. these are the reasons people buy mercedes.

Douchebag Midengine posts selective quotes against the LS, Xero does the same against the S and gets deboosted.

As far as I'm concerned, both these cars are junk if the're creaking. My 1994 Infiniti G20 at ten years of age was solid as a rock. Oh wait, maybe I shouldnt have told you what kind of car it was, because now you know its Japanese.

Midengine and EL34, grow up and get a life. Your anti-competative sentiments mirrors that of Communism. Based on your biased stance, coincidence? I think not...

furthermore houston, your comparisons are apples to oranges.

apples to apples would require first comparing cars that provide EQUIVALENT performance, technology, comfort, etc---and once those variables are equalized---choosing the more reliable. giving up all of these things for a little more reliability is a bad value from my perspective.

Too bad to read about the lack of solidity and build quality after 13,000 miles in the Autoweek long-term test. Automobile just featured an article of a long term test of the LS as well and they were also disappointed that the car requires a trip to the dealer for service every 5,000 miles as part of the scheduled maint.

If the LS460 was available with AWD (NOT the LS600hL), I would force my wife to test drive it and I would know she'd be impressed. But the imperative is slightly lost with a RWD car... I love the 460 but I would be happier with her in something with AWD.

Autospies should not allow loser fanboys like this moron to post biased articles. Everybody knows what this stupid idiot's preferences lie. Of course there's always something negative one can dig up about a certain manufacturer. Heck, I can find twice as many negative articles about quality issues of crappy inferior manufacturers such as MB/BMW. Should I be allowed to post these on autoblogs as well?

This is one of those conversations that just makes me shake my head. There are several engineers on here who no doubt could talk intelligently on everything mathematical from Bessel functions and Eigenvectors to Fourier and Laplace transforms.

My take on your first source is that it is ALWAYS completely necessary to understand both the origin, entire derivation and assumptions of all equations the engineer uses. Otherwise, the equations are often applied incorrectly- it happens often.

That's strange, because in my area, Lexus service is the best, Acura is next, Audi is somewhere in the middle, and at two dealers that are fairly close to each other, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are the worst. There are, however, a BMW and a Mercedes dealer (both in the same chain) farther away that have better service.

"And that's probably the reason that they only sell well in North America"

What the fcuk are you talking about. They have been increasing sales in Europe every freaking year. Europe Lexus has a waiting list of people wanting to buy the 600h. You bitch about numbers and the lack thereof, well they have to make available those numbers first before people can buy them, and right now Lexus' goal is to sell small amounts in Europe. This actually makes them more exclusive than any other inferior German make.

Give me a break Mr. Flozel,

Lexus is hardly exclusive in Europe. Exclusive in Europe is also associated with heritage and achievements, none of which Lexus can claim they have in comparison to the European brands. Let's not forget that Toyota's massive cash reserves were responsible in the first place for getting Lexus where they are today. I wouldn't be surprised if Lexus sold cars at a loss early in their history simply to gain market share. Toyota could afford to do that anyway given their financial wealth.

Let me see... Lexus cars falling apart after a short period of time...is that really news?
It is common knowledge in the car enthusiast world that Japanese cars are falling apart after 1-2 years of use, that is one of reasons for which they are not so successful in Europe, of course coupled with the lack of class and the flat, boring driving experience. The Lexus fanatics on this site will never be able to change the cruel reality however hard they try. My advice... put your mind at peace and except the facts...German cars are simply BETTER.

Lexus has surpassed the Germans in technology? You mean the technology the Germans invented and Lexus simply copied and perfected, then claimed they "invented"? You're full of it, Flozel.

"The Mercedes system slows down to 0, while the Lexus quits at speeds below 20 mph. Just when you're closing in on the car in front and slowing down, the system gives up and leaves it up to you to quickly mash the brakes to bring the car to a halt. A friend of mine came over for dinner tonight, and he had traded in his A8L for an LS460 SWB last year. The car he had wanted was a demo S550 AMG, but complications with the dealer and the warranty brought him back to Lexus (he had an LS400 before the A8L). Now, he says the LS460 bores him and he would like to get out of the lease... that if his A8L had the reliability of the Lexus (his A8 was an '04, first year, lemon-lawed), he would definitely buy it again. He misses the car's performance and design.
