Autobahn Speed Limit? German Chancellor Says Not On Her Watch!
German Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted Sunday that her government would not try to introduce a speed limit on the nation's freeways, despite a proposal from her coalition's junior party.

Members of the center-left Social Democratic Party, who along with Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union make up the governing coalition, backed a proposal over the weekend to introduce a general speed limit of 130 kph (80 mph) on Germany's famed freeways, the autobahn.

Asked in an interview to be aired Monday on state-run ZDF television station what she thought of the proposal, Merkel flatly rejected it saying, "It won't happen with me."

It's also the green party of Germany that's pushing for speed limits. The funny thing is that I recall reading about experiments that show that the introduction of a general speed limit will only lower emissions by something like 3% if I remember correctly. That's essentially nothing or no big difference.

Instead of watching TV where they interview this woman and ask her ( she has no idea about islam other than she has to wear a scarf ) and then she complains about not wanting to wear it! How about you actually come to a muslim country, U.A.E is an example, and ask about it? It just gives a sense of protection to the woman, and keeps away men. If you think thats bad, you should check the rape stories happening everyday in the U.S, maybe that would actually explain to you why it protects them.

A woman in islam is protected and well treated by the whole community. She has the right to study, work etc and no one would talk to her about it. She also has the right to inherit money. Her husband is NOT allowed to harm her, in any kind of way. Plus her husband has to spend on her. Is that what some of you call opressing women?

What really pisses me off is that cars contribute a fraction of the greenhouse gases that all the Chinese coal-fired power plants do. What we need is more clean nuclear power.

Too bad many of the readers here know so little about nuclear power. Nuclear waste can be reprocessed for conversion to more energy. The only danger lies in the leaky containers of nuclear waste stored on power plant property because the greenies were opposed to storing the stuff encased in glass within safe containers deep underground at the Yukka Mountain site.

Nuclear power is clean power while fossil fuels pollute the atmosphere. And, for all you peaceniks out there, don't forget that the ongoing decommissioning of nuclear weapons makes fissile material available for nuclear power plants -- that's good isn't it?

Yeah we raced a TGV in France...and won...

If you don't know a TGV is a really fast train and beating it means doing over 125 mph.

In Britain the official speed limit is 70 but most people do 80 or 90. 100 is quite possible as well, do it a lot.

I've seen a traffic engineering survey (cant recall where or what it was called) that said something to the notion that 90% of traffic on the autobahn travels at an average of 80mph regardless of whether a speed limit is posted or not. The MUTCD here in the states similarly designs speed limits around the flow of traffic, citing that the speed limit is to be in the 85th percentile of cars speeds traveling on that road. The problem of course is that those measurements are taken over a period of time which does not reflect traffic speed changes (rush hour). And so the speed limit is dubiously low on all roads and hence become a fantastic revenue generator. I can see that this is the case here. In the United States, traffic citations fleece nearly $40 billion from American pockets each year. Germany has, like every other country, found a road safety farce by which money can be made.

THE REASON WHY THERE IS A BIG PUSH FOR THIS IS BECAUSE OF PRESSURE FROM THE UNITED STATES THIS IS WHY MOST OF THE COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD DOES NOT LIKE US IT IS NOT JUST BECAUSE OF THE WAR IN IRAQ BUT BECAUSE WE TELL OTHER COUNTRIES HOW TO RUN THEIR AFAIRS NOW WE ARE TELLING OTHER COUNTRIES WHARE TO SET THEIR SPEED LIMITS WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE THIS GETTING REDICULIOUS WE SHOULD MIND OUR OWN BUSINESS ANR LEAVE OTHER COUNTRIES TO MAKE THEIR OWN LAWS.
