 First Drive: 2008 Maserati GranTurismo
With the GranTurismo coupe, Maserati invites comparisons to the Mercedes-Benz CL550, BMW 6-series, and Jaguar XKR. But mention that the XKR costs some 26 grand less than the GranTurismo’s base price of $114,650, or that the Jaguar is almost 300 pounds lighter than the GranTurismo’s claimed 4150-pound curb weight, and the Maserati folks shrug it off with lots of hand gestures. The same thing happens if you mention that the similarly priced BMW M6 has 95 more horsepower and 44 more pound-feet of torque than the 405 horses and 339 pound-feet of torque that come from the GranTurismo’s 4.2-liter V-8. “Power is not our race,” they say.

On the other hand, the GranTurismo has something the BMW and the Jaguar don’t—two back seats with space for standard-sized humans. As does the Mercedes CL550, but the GranTurismo’s claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 5.1 seconds is 0.2 second quicker than what Mercedes estimates for the Benz.

The Maserati lacks the electronic gadgets available on the Benz, BMW, and Jaguar, but some people consider that a bonus. There are no massaging, adaptive, or cooled seats; no adaptive cruise control; no night vision; and no overly complicated infotainment system.

While this car looks better than the old car, who cares? This car is nothing special, the BMW and Jaguar are better looking and probibly alot more reliable. This car looks odd from almost every angle especially the rear. This car is a big yawn.

I disagree -- the GranTurismo has way more character. Wait until the next generation larger engine becomes available.

Well I must disagree with you on it's looks.I think the BMW 6 series coupe is very awkward with the Bangle tail design. In addition it's not any faster except in M6 designation. The Maserati also has a much nicer interior then either the BMW or Jaguar. In addition you can actually put 4 people in it where you could never do that in the Jag or BMW.In terms of price the BMW M6 is not too far away from the Maserati. It will beat it in a straight line but it is doubtful that it handles any better. The Jaguar has about the same performance as the Maserati.Your probably right on reliabilty but the Maser has it on exclusivity.

Yes, Jaguar really only designed the XK with four seats to keep insurance costs down. The same is true of the Lexus SC and Porsche 997--they don't want to be classified as "sports cars," because they have astronomical insurance.

This GT Maser is much shorter than the Quattroporte. If you want 4 seats, get a Quattroporte, otherwise get the GT and forget about anyone ever riding in the back seat.

Instant classic! Perfectly fits the name GT--sinuous style, luxurious interior with real space, smooth ride, awesome V8. Love it.

Pure beauty!

lyonboy must be crazy... How exactly can you say that any BMW right now is better looking (or special?!) than this GT??? The angles are odd? Coming from a "lyonboy"!

Nothing short of gorgeous!

I am almost POSITIVE EL34 will buy this car to join his collection of Ferraris, BMWs, M-Bs, Lambos, Porsches, and Audis!

LOL. You're kidding, right?.com

You should see the Maserati configurator for the GranTurismo. It's much more advanced than the Build-your-Quattroporte, and it looks absolutely stunning from every angle... probably the best BYO I've ever seen.

I have not seen this maser in person but it has to be a dramatic improvement to be as attractive as the BMW or Jag. Yes the BMW has a couple of awkward angles and the Jag is not particularly innovative but this Maser is UGLY from the back, awkward from the side and only slightly attractive from the front. To me this car is nothing special. If a back seat is so important buy a CL.

You're wrong. It's as simple as that. Wait until it comes out. When I first saw it in the auto show pictures, I didn't think it was anything special, either. I was wrong.

Jaguar XKR is the benchmark in this class, it's better looking and has supreme performance. The new 2008 XK is even more perfectly engineered...

Spoken like a true Salesman

Benchmark indeed .1980's style extendable radio antenna//Same 4.2L Engine from over 4 years ago // Cheap Aluminium Look Plastic Center Console// Spoiler on boot lid to satisfy Euro 3rd Brake Lights height requirements creates lift at over 130mph at front of vehicle thus reducing grip up front.
