Honda October Sales Up 3.4% But Acura Plummets 22% For The Month!

American Honda Motor Co, Inc, posted record October sales of 114,799 Honda and Acura vehicles, surpassing the previous October 2005 record of 110,895, the company announced today. Based on the daily selling rate*, October sales declined 0.2 percent due to one additional selling day compared to last year.

Year-to-date, American Honda sales increased 2.5 percent to 1,308,319. Honda Division year-to-date sales increased 4.3 percent to 1,158,707.

Honda Division posted record October sales of 101,913, up 3.4 percent compared to last year. October records for individual models included the Odyssey with sales of 14,451, up 24.4 percent, and the Fit, with sales of 4,868, up 67.3 percent for the month. Sales of the Accord increased 25.8 percent to 30,936. Sales of the Civic increased 7.3 percent to 23,809. Honda Division total car sales increased 19.8 percent to 59,921.

"Car sales are gaining momentum and response to the new Accord has been positive," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda. "Car sales are up for a variety of reasons, but the number one reason is that compelling products with inherent value generate consumer interest."

Acura Division posted sales of 12,886 with a new October record set for the RDX sport utility vehicle. Sales of the RDX increased 9.5 percent to 1,937. Sales of the MDX sport utility vehicle increased 5.4 percent to 4,855. Record Acura Division light-truck sales increased 6.5 percent to 6,792. October sales of the TL luxury performance sedan totaled 3,421; the TSX sports sedan totaled 2,308. *The daily selling rate (DSR) is calculated with 26 days for October 2007, versus 25 days for October 2006. Year-to-date, the DSR is calculated with 256 days for 2007, versus 255 days for 2006. All percentages reflect DSR.

Honda has to be the only car organization where its one company ends up beating up on its sister company. Toyota/Lexus/Scion dosent beat up on itself. Nissan/Infiniti dosent beat up on itself (though it treads a fine line with the G37 and the Z). So why do Honda and Acura always end up competing with one another sales. Obviously it can be tied to one car and one car alone...the Accord.

That car is the high end Honda line that could qualify for the Acura camp as well. I think Honda has done a disservice for not seperating the brands and platforms more succinctly.

These are not bad cars, quite the contrary, they are very good cars. However until Acura cars become RWD and AWD ONLY, Honda will continue to have issues between the two sister companies.

The problem I see as a consumer is, that the Acura models really aren't that different in the form of amenities compared to the Honda equivalent.

So why pay the additional?

When people shop the two brands they are notlooking at that. When the 3rd generation TL came out it was arguably the best car for the price in its class. The car models need updating which is coming next year. The truck division is doing fine and soon the TL will regain its status as the number 1 selling luxury car.
As far as other companies not trampling on their sister companies I disagree half of Nissans product are overpriced and in Infiniti price range. Shit there new super car cost more than any Infiniti. So what does that tell you?
It's all about substance and catching the market at the right time 04 - 06 was Acura's years. I still don't get the fuss though they sell more cars than Infiniti even on a bad month.

And I would be surprised if you couldn't get xenons on the new Accord.

houston, the thing is, all of the things you mentioned are superficial and won't make much of a difference to a high-end Accord vs. low-end TL buyer.

You also forgot numbers 5 and 6.

the problem with Acura is that its cars are FWD, they lack a halo car and they lack a V8.

As for their amenities I think they are fine. Their interiors are better I think than Infinitis and Lexus and so is their NAV system (one of the best in the business IMO).

Poor product planning and execution one after another.

RL - over-priced in MSRP - you can buy a '08 with $5k discount NOW! Smallest backseat for a top-of-line vehicle. Sluggish acceleration (heavy SH-AWD, poor 5-speed gearing)
MDX - too small. Smaller than the old one. Apparently, being sporty was the focus. It sells OK, but could have been better.
RDX - are they kidding. I4 Turbo at $35K?

I blame all of those on the CEO. No V8 is part of the problem, but Acura could have done better even with that limitation.

I agree about the RDX. For the CUV segment it's shooting for, it's way to expensive. I bought my wife a brand new CX-7 which is in the same size class and almost has everything the RDX has. Loaded with damn near everything on it, I didn't even come close to paying $30,000 let alone $35,000.

The CR-V, while nice and best-selling, doesn't do much for me.

Sad line up with only two redeeming models; MDX and TL, and the TL is showing it's age. I blame Honda, If they actually want Acura to succeed they need to create unique products for the line up and stop re-badging Hondas.

Honda either needs to quite production of Acura or else design them to be more appealing. Right now, Acuras are in between family cars and luxury cars. That's not a hot market. Acura needs to add more luxury features to their cars for them to sell.

I agree--under one condition. Their cars are not actually straddling this line; with all of their features, they are certainly full-on luxury cars. It's the POSITIONING that screws things up.

To me, Acura just always equates to "boring." I sometimes get a headache thinking about their cars, because they just don't have anything exciting--a lot of technology, yes, but nothing else. Lexus cars may not be sporty, but they are presented in such a way as to be very desirable. Acuras are just not the same. They have stagnated for 10 years.

It's hard to explain. Some compare Audi to Acura, saying that it's the Japanese version. That's somewhat correct, but definitely not fully. Audis are sexy. They are beautifully designed, and they look the part. The way they drive is superb, especially the higher-end models. Acuras look like Hondas. I love Hondas but I don't want to pay $40K for one.

I think Acuras are nice looking, but they just lack the luxury features such as SmartKey for all their cars instead of just the RL, ventilated seats, a higher number of powers in the seat, etc.
