Lexus has teething problems with IS-F design but there’s a reason

The new IS-F sedan has shown that engineers at Lexus can build performance cars that can go head-to-head with sport saloons from their German rivals, but convincing buyers that the new ‘F’ brand can equal the more established ‘M’ and ‘AMG’ marques is a much tougher challenge. There’s no doubting that the V8 rear-driver is a solid car. Unfortunately, most agree that its stock interior, awkward bodykit and bonnet bulge doesn’t meld to form a complete package.

Toyota’s design chief Wahei Hirai acknowledged that there are such complaints but said in defense that the goal with the IS-F was to create a feel for all F performance models rather than focus on the single IS-F.

Could everyone please drop the whole Hoffmeister kink nonsense?

A damn angle/slope of a line isn't exlusive to BMW just because they gave it a name. And I beleive whatever caveman was the first to draw that curve in the dirt is the real source of its origin.

If you do continue to bitch about, at least be fair and mention the numerous other cars with a similar rear-window slope. The new G sedan from Infiniti is but one example.

The Hoffmeister Kink

In 1965, BMW introduced 1965 2000C. The designer, Wilhelm Hoffmeister, is credited with first penning the little forward wedge at the base o f the C-pillar that has become a BMW design hallmark known as the "Hoffmeister kink." The same styling cue has not only adorned nearly every BMW since but also many a would-be Bimmer from other manufacturers. However, the copy-cat was not Lexus, nor Infiniti, etc .

The copier was Hoffmeister himself. Said kink on the rear quarter window was a feature on Dodge Dart and Polara models in 1960.

So maybe we should call it the “Exner Kink”?

there's a key point your missing. the hoffmeister kink has become a trademark of BMW cars since the 1960s. cars across the BMW lineup incorporate it. it's integral to their design.

And hybrids pollute in their own way. I'll let a genius like Nicad figure that out himself...

the 1-series and A2s are no more luxurious than corolla LEs or civics. camry LE/XLE and avalons are FAR more luxurious.

it's a fallacy to consider ALL bmws, audis, and smart cars (made by mb) as "luxury" cars, unless you happen to be a brand whore.

further, there ARE luxury toyotas, such as $60k Land Cruisers and $100k Centurys.

XYZZXYZZ - 11/8/2007 6:49:21 AM

hence, using terms like "luxury" and "trucks" (vs. sedans) DO NOT MAKE for accurate sales comparisons. they're just WEASEL WORDS to make bmw SEEM more popular than lexus.

there are considerable OVERLAPS in "luxury" between hi-dollar toyotas and entry level lexi. and even mid-level camrys can be more luxurious than entry models of so-called "luxury BRANDS."

the PROPER comparison is ALL vehicle sales of the major mfgrs, as in toyota+lexus, vw+audi+bentley+lambo. and bmw+mini+RR, mb+maybach+smart, gm including ALL divisions, etc.

on this simplified but ACCURATE accounting, No 1 worldwide is gm (for now). No 2 is toyota. ALL the others FALL IN BEHIND these companies in total sales.

BMWs are about providing a great driving experience first, traditional "luxury" second. all the cars are fun to drive. and the more expensive models add in luxury to that experience.

and, guess what, people are willing to pay huge premiums for a car that's a blast to drive. if you're getting caught up on the word luxury then replace it with prestige.

BMW, lexus, mercedes, etc...they're all prestige brands.

and BMW happens to be the best selling prestige car brand in the world. period.

if ANYONE is going to claim bragging rights for a brand being #1, total sales by this simplified accounting is the only VALID measure.

due to the nebulousness of defining "luxury" as i just pointed out.
even "prestige" is VERY hazy, and mostly just in the mind of the beholder. is EVERY audi more prestigious than a vw phaeton? is EVERY lexus more prestigious than a toyota century? can the driver of a 3-series honestly look down his nose at the owner of an LS460?

bottom line, we have to ALL just temper our enthusiams a bit, and put aside claims of superiority. it's not unlike styling. JUDGEMENTS in both areas are totally subjective and personal.

ANY car that works for its owner, is a good car.

the only totally OBJECTIVE and valid claims are performance figures --which MAY or MAY NOT be a big deal to 80+% of the buying audience, and sales figures --which ONLY reflect to what extent large numbers of buyers support (or don't) the offerings of Brand X, Model Y, or whatever.

again, ANY car that works for its OWNER, is a good car.
