its good because these inputs are unrestricting , meaning you control what is being played through the speakers completely. its somewhat bad because it is more distracting for a driver.

I think BMW is going the right way with USB interface. The USB jack in my E60 is a must-have!

How does having a USB port benefit those who simply require a standard audio-in for say their COWON D2, Sansa View or MEIZU M6 DAP units?

The ONLY interface that should be universally adopted is a standard 1/8 inch audio in, all others force one to choose a specific DAP unit or DAP brand.

I'm all for a standard 1/8th in AUX plug in all cars. No need to mess with integration. However, I do feel this plug needs to be well placed. Places like glove boxes (inconvenient while driving) and sitting in the middle of the dash (cords hanging everywhere) just wont do. I find the best place, and hence where I installed mine in my car, is inside the armrest storage compartment. Easy driver access and hidden out of sight.

I mine was installed in the armrest from the factory. It's ok but sucks having this cord hanging out or having to open the armrest to change tracks. Talk about distracting.

It's all about the playlists!! To quote my favorite marketing genius ever, "set it and forget it"

Thanks AUDI for blessing us all with a feature that was in my 1995 Suzuki Cappuccino!

No kidding. That much "jack" for a car not to have an aux. jack. Pardon the pun.
