Mercedes C-class gets new Universal Media Interface

Mercedes-Benz will be equipping European and U.S. delivered C-class models early next year with its Universal Media Interface (UMI), designed for connecting mobile entertainment and communication devices such as a cell phone or MP3 music player. Inside the glovebox of cars equipped with the UMI are a USB port, SD card-reader and integrated navigation system.

To activate the various multimedia functions, all the driver has to do is press the ‘AUX’ button on the car radio.

Interesting. I wonder how many manufactures they had to work with in order to get their control sets. Also how will it handles newer devices since there is not a universal communication standard for interfacing with the electronics.

The new SYNC System in the 2008 Ford Focus seems more advanced/better integrated.

Additionally, these claims of, "Once connected with the mobile devices, the driver can then use the system to scroll through a MP3 player’s songlist" isn't even possible unless said player is equipped with a compatible dock connector, none of which are currently standardized industry wide.

Looks like yet another system bowing down to the Cupertino Monopoly.

But the thing is, SYNC is the Focus's only selling point. The C-Class stands for much more--this will only be "another" feature among the plentiful luxuries you can get in this handsome new car.
