VW Jetta TDI delayed until summer of ‘08

Bloody shame! This mans that the Tiguan diesel I want to buy will be delayed as well.

It's a shame indeed that we have government agencies who know nothing about cars giving diesels such a bad time. If it were not for the needless micromanagement of diesel emissions we would have dozens of models to choose from here in the states right now.

To follow that....

I am in the market for a high mileage commuter car right now and would love to buy a diesel VW. But I cant. I would love to buy a diesel Jeep Liberty. But I cant. I would love to....... on and on.

A diesel Mercedes is great, but $55k defeats the purpose of a high mileage econo-commuter.

Actually it is hard to do. The additional equipment and technology required to make diesels pass the new sniff tests around the world is quite complex and comprehensive.

If you look at the systems that both VW and Mercedes have had to develop to make these things pass in the US and Europe, they add a lot of weight and cost to the cars that also cut into performance and efficiency.

As the price tag for diesels in the US at least has already been pretty high as an option, this will only serve to make it more expensive. This is why it is hard to find a "cheap" diesel car.

Most automakers will offer the option only on their more expensive models. Jeep for example only offers the 3.0 diesel option on their most expensive version of the Cherokee, but not the base model.

In the end, sure the new diesels are cleaner. But the cost of that cleanliness may defeat the some extra fuel efficiency and economical appeal they had offered in the past.

Have you seen the sticker on the Jeep CRDs? They go for around $46k where I live, in Indiana....hemi's are only $33k. For $46k, you can get a used VW Touareg V10 TDI fully optioned, and it still won't run you that much.

How clean is your jeep again?

Hybrids still have carbon emissions.

AND, they still have EMISSIONS. You guys have the impression that hybrids have ZERO emissions. That's not true. They're still gas engined! They aren't electric cars!

Please your Jeep pumps out a pathetic 195 hp and only a weak 230 lb-ft of torque. A VW 2.0 Turbo is just as powerful as you 4.0 I6. The gasoline Touareg makes 280 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque and gets better fuel economy. Please come again. That's 44% more horsepower, 20% more torque and better fuel economy and way better emissions. Stop ignoring facts.

As for the diesel, it moves a vehicle that is 300-400 pounds heavier over the entire model line. Has 10% more horsepower, 63% more torque (that you need for towing/hauling/and off roading) and uses less energy and makes less C02. While producing less pollution in the near future.

Your Jeep is rated @ 2 from the EPA. The VW is rated @ 6. Stop the lies.

You think the Jeep GC 3.0CD is the best they have to offer today??? Well, #1, Mercedes doesn't make the best diesels. Those are from Audi and BMW. And #2, Mercedes doesn't even sell the 3.0 diesel here. Is it even still in production?
