2010 Jaguar XJ to get XF ‘coupe-like’ styling and 300hp

I believe that this design language will translate very well onto a larger platform...

The XJ needs to get rid of all that unsafe glare-causing fake wood that is plastered all over its dash. I was disappointed in the Jag showroom last week when I tried to get into the rear seat of the LWB version called Van den Plas. I could not do it without banging my head on the roof. My wife ended up test driving the X-type. She liked the size but complained bitterly about glare from the shiny fake wood. I like the Audi Quattro AWD system that I have on the A6 better than the system on the X-type. Jaguar is too secretive about the design details of its AWD system. What are they hiding?

Please Jaguar if you are reading this, for the love of god, please don't screw the XJ up. Here is a quick way to tell if you are- if it looks like the XF- you're screwing it up. I have read multiple times that it will maintain distinctive styling so I am not so worried about that.

The other thing that MUST go is that horrendous back window form on the XF- everyone knows what I am talking about and it is so un-Jaguar. I expect something more beautiful on the XJ- more akin to the XKs windows in form.

The XF looks fine, far from spectacular. I think the coupe-look sedan thing is about to be overdone. The XF looks a lot better to me than the CLS Mercedes but one coupe-look sedan in the line-up is plenty. Lexus has fallen into the Audi look-alike trap where all the sedans look too much alike. Jaguar, Mercedes and BMW have avoided that and I think if Jaguar were to make the XJ look similiar to the XF it would be the end for Jaguar which would be a shame.

To say that the XJ will be more "coupe-like" is just to say that it will be returning to the porportions it had for 35 years of its 40 year life- the proportions before the 2004 redesign.

It is no secret that the CLS was designed to be a "Jag-fighter". Jaguar's have had those same proportions for 40 years- since the first XJ. Mercedes didn't invent anything beyond the word "four-door coupe" with the CLS (excepting the car itself) which I assure you you will never find anyone at Jaguar using that phrase- it is rather idiotic.

very true, and that seems to be something alot of people forget or dont know....the CLS was created specifically to fight Jaguar, when Ford took them over and there was word they were going to expand the lineup Mercedes considered the prestigous marque a threat to them so they created the CLS to fight the Jaguar line....Mercedes has said that several times

Yes but not in a V6. The V8's will start at 5.0 ltr's and about 380 hp and 500hp for the superchaged.

If the next XJ is anything close to beieng as good as the new XF, it will be a superb car. I wonder what will replace the X-Type? Hopefully a two seat sports car maybe!!!

What Jaguar sedan has ever looked like the CLS other than the XF? What XJ had a fast-back roofline? Mercedes wanted to "copy" Jaguar with the CLS? To me the CLS does not like anything else thank god. The CLS is ugly. Mercedes sold 551 CLS's last month, big whoopie! By the time Porsche has the Panamera, and Audi and BMW bring there coupe-like sedans out I think the market will just not respond. Frankly I prefer the current XJ styling to the XF and all the other wannabees to the CLS. To me the CLS is an overpriced sedan without the practicallity of an E-Class, all for style? Count me out of that camp.

Look at the Jaguar MKII, and then look at the Mercedes-Benz CLS. Even an '80s XJ!

I think we may see the new XJ next year. First, we have seen the XF this year, and it is a 2009 model. So if the gap remains the same, we shall see the new XJ next year as a 2010 model.

What really makes me think that it would be particularly appropriate is that next year is the XJ's 40th anniversary.

It has to be one of the longest continuously sold models- I can't actually think of any that have been around that long. But what do I know, maybe someone could provide some perspective in this matter.

So people are still complaining about XFs design. Well from what i have read so far, the car actually looks much better in the flesh than in pics. And the angles from which Jaguar press pics have been shot, i would say that these pics are misleading. I think that the XF has a fantastic design character, and will sell like hotcakes, from the amount of people advancing their money for the car bodes well for jaguar. And I think even I will want an XJ that is bit more classical than the XF. In that segment people want something out of the ordinary and jaguar designs have certainly not been on the ordinary side for all these days. A bit more visual drama, a bit more classic touches, a bit more sensual styling should give the XJ the looks, but it should also be modern. Pretty tough task but i think jaguar should be up to it.
