Which SUV is the biggest threat to the BMW X5?

Was your guess the Cayenne?

The FX?

Well this may surprise you...

Almost 19% of the people who ended up buying the Volvo XC90, were also considering the X5. They ended up choosing it over the X5.

(see slide below)

And that's without a V8 version available...until now.

The Spies predict this market will get hotter than ever over the next few years.

And whoever figures out and produces an SUV that combines handsome looks and drive of the BMW, the safety and utility of the XC90, the interior build quality of the VW Touareg and the flash of the FX, will win this coveted segment.

We'll put our opening chip bid on the upcoming Q7 from Audi.

Your generalization ignores the fact that an "automobile enthusiast" will never -- that's right, never -- buy a volvo. Fact is, those who buy Volvo do so because of the so-called safety reputation or because their wives like them!I have had Volvos and whatever you can or cannot say about them, they are b-o-r-i-n-g. Now my Audis on the other hand...

Saab SUV V8 is coming.
Volvo XC90 5/6 cyl is weak and engine jumpy. V8 may be fine. At Anaheim Auto show they were lining up to drive them!
X5 and X3 drive like a truck .. too stiff for me.
Cayenne is nice but even the V8 is too slow for me .. turbo is just over priced.
Tourag has it all, except the VW Badge on the outside.
Lexus GX/LX also feels like a truck.. it is a 4 runner, right? 400h looks like a winner, but looks are too "girly".
Murano is nice looking but cheaply made and weak engine. Make a luxury version, V8, might be nice.
Some one will get an "urban" SUV right some day, I hope.

The XC90 is a nice vehicle. I'm sure it will satisify many family's tooling around the neighborhood with grandma & the kids. But if you are looking for true class, styling, excellent handeling, moderate off road capability you should be driving the BMW 4.4 X5. You will not be dissappointed.

With all due rsepect to BMW, the X5 is not the safest SUV on the market. It was when it was launched, but the Volkswagen Touareg is marginally safer. According to euroNCAP, both get 5 stars, but the VW gets a higher percentage rating.

The X5 is still a safe car to ride in, but not the safest.
