this isnt great news...for being an economical car, i expect more.

if my daily driven celica avgs. 26-27 mpg city from a 2.2L 5spd motor. i expect a lower displacement, more economical vehicle to come in at least 30mpg.

its not bad numbers, just falls short IMO. a friend of my has a yaris that avgs 34mpg ona bad day, and close to 50mpg hwy.

aim higher!

Not impressive at all. The current, well-aged corolla gets over 40 highway, and has more space, and its more reliable.

If you look at the autospies articles on the new Corolla, it advertised a HWY rating of 34mpg for the base model and 30mpg for the larger motor. Remeber, the EPA changed the ratings. I am sure someone will get personal results higher than 34mpg with this Aveo5.

EPA estimates for vehicles in this class...

Aveo - 24/34
Yaris - 34/40
Fit - 28/34
Versa - 26/31
xD - 27/33

being a new vehicle thats supposed to compete with other "economic" vehicles, it sure doesnt pack the punch it needs gain in sales.

results: D+ for being even below the average!

r15,
With all due respect, the Aveo5 gets 26/34. The Yaris gets 29/36 respecively (most efficient version).

shredmo:

fine by me...still the Aveo is under the top 4 rite now. and this being a vehicle to acquire sales with its fuel efficiency.

in this segment, for a buyer, it comes down to who can provide the most amount for the money. the aveo falls short when the numbers given.

r15,
Nearly your whole MPG list was flawed, after further review. When trying to persuade someone with numbers, accuracy is important, unless you are trying to BS.
Aveo-26/34
Yaris-29/36
Fit-28/34
Versa 27/33 (CVT, but the best mpg version, 26/33 for the 6mt)
xD-26/33

The Aveo is right in the middle of the pack, with little room either way. I don't consider the Yaris in the same class, but I will give that nod to you.

IMO, it is the nicest looking of the bunch. If you put a nice set of wheels on the Fit, then it would possibly be the best looker. Personally, I'd buy the Honda over any of them based on track record, but the Aveo looks appealing.

How is the Yaris not in this class?

sorry but these numbers were provided by Edmunds.com, i am unfortunate to actually test the numbers on these vehicles myself...so I must rely on a reputable source, hence Edmund's.

and please explaint to me how the Yaris isnt considered in this class...the Aveo, from specs revealed falls short.

The Yaris is available in the US only as a 2 door hatch or a four door sedan. All of these are 4 door upright hatches. Europe gets the four door hatch version of the Yaris, which IMO, competes in this class.

Terribly unoriginal. The "5" suffix trend was started by Mazda, years ago... but now Kia and Chevy are doing it. Weird.

As for the fuel efficiency? Terrible. You can get 600mi on a tank of gas... in an A8L 4.2TDI.
