Just How Much Would You Pay For A New Nissan GT-R?
Think the $70,000 asking price is a great deal for the upcoming Nissan GT-R?

Well the Spies think it may be, but only if you can get it for somewhere near that price.

With only 1500 examples planned for the entire US market, there are reports surfacing that the GT-R will command up a $15,000 premium at the dealer level.

Now setting the collectability aside for the moment, that changes the landscape quite a bit and we aren’t just sure how the value to performance per dollar would then equate. Is it still the value it was when we first saw the MSRP?

Of course only the consumer can tell us. So the question now beckons us to ask. Just how much would you pay to own a new GT-R?

I don't know where they got that number but I just don't understand how the GT-R can get from 0-60 in just 3.5 seconds. Although it does have 480 HP and AWD, this car still ways 3800 lbs. and thats a lot to lug around. The lambo gallardo has around 500 hp and weighs around 3200 lbs and is rated w/0-60 of 4 seconds. I was at the LA autoshow and i asked the speaker about the stats and he also said that the figures weren't exactly true. He estimated that it would more realistically be around 4 seconds which is more believable but still hard to accept.

And by that time, I am sure there will be plenty of aftermarket parts available for me to make it go even faster.

Your first car will be a GT-R?
You must be joking...insurance, maintenance (think because it's a Nissan it will be cheap to maintain? Wrong), fuel (in 3 years I'm guessing fuel prices will be higher), initial cost (It will be worth way more than a 1/3 of its price in 3 years, more like 60%), and the highly likely factor that you will die...a 0-60 in 3.5, 480 hp, 192 mph, twin turbo AWD hypercar as your first car...right.
That's really not a good idea. Please do the sensible thing every other rich kid does (I'm guessing you're rich judging by your expectations of your first car) and buy a 3 series or whatever. If you do for some mad reason get bought (you're not using your own money are you) this thing then I beg you, please, please, please take as many advanced driving courses as you can...480hp in the hands of a novice is not a good idea...
I'm a new driver, and let me tell you, everything is fast enough, and you will be very surprised to find out just how quickly "slow" cars get up to speed...hell my car does 0-60 in 11.5 and I suddenly find myself going way faster than I intended.

I agree! And, IMO, it doesn't MATTER what a car's roots are as long as the END PRODUCT is the one that shines! The GT-R, whether the badge on its hood was a Nissan one or not, is an amazing vehicle! That's like saying the M3, RS4, IS-F, C63 are all pieces of crap because they're based on "entry-level" sedans! Does anybody really care about that? NO. You are such an IGNORANT...How do you know this is an amazing vehicle? A guy like you who's obviously clueless when it comes to cars thinks Nissan suddenly became a super-car maker. It doesn't matter what roots a car has? Are you that clueless? People buy Porsche because Porsche gives the guarantee of excellence with their name. What guarantee a Nissan gives? That you can go fast in a quarter mile? You are a fool...nothing more.
And your infantile comparison with the M3 or AMG cars??? Are you comparing luxury makers with Nissan. M3 or AMG cars are based on an entry LUXURY vehicles but they are almost entirely redesigned from ground up to became the performance sedans that wear those badges(M and AMG). Are you comparing that with what Nissan builds? How pathetic is that?

The world's most expensive rice-rocket. Sorry I know it's a ridiculously fast car, and the styling is not up to par with what others may like. But I can see that headline popping up all over soon enough.

I was shocked to see this thing well over 65k. I would have put it at 50-55. For 60k plus, I'll take an IS-F, M3, S4, AMG. They all may not be as fast (some are), but I would feel better about myself at the end of the day paying for a luxury nameplate instead of a Nissan. It's a good company, don't get me wrong, but something that costs as much as your luxury brand vehicles (a la MX45) should not be in your everyday consumer brand, regardless of where it started overseas.

CynicalCynical - 11/21/2007 2:29:38 PM

I think that it should be in the 60k range, in order to compete with the M3s of the world - superior performance, with a similar price - that way, many potential buyers might have a real conundrum (style vs. raw performance?). Any real automotive "enthusiast" would go the raw performance route. However, the purchasing decision is not and should not just be about performance if the vehicle is a daily driver.

The GT-R doesn't, or should I say, the M3, RS4, and C63 do not compete in the same class as the GT-R, how did those cars get into this thread?

CynicalCynical - 11/21/2007 3:38:40 PM
+1 Boost
I think the M3s/RS4s got in this thread because of relative price parity - a buyer in the $60k-$70k range has three good options with the M3/RS4/C63 (I figure the re-designed RS4 may be a little bit higher given its price relative to M3 historically, but let's leave that out for now). The GT-R complicates things a bit, because for a few $k more, you get performance on the level of a 911 Turbo. Now, I understand that the M3/RS4/C63 are not 100% performance tuned (there has to be some aspect of daily drive-ability for lack of a better term), but I think that a buyer in the segment would at least consider, if only briefly, the GT-R due to its performance aspirations. That's why I think that the GT-R would present a viable choice if it were slightly lower priced, a la Lexus (although in this case, the GT-R performs better, whereby a Lexus gives you 80% of the performance for 80% of the price). The fact is, Nissan will have a hard time garnering buyers in that price range due to its nameplate, unless it absolutely blows the doors off its competition. If you offer it at $60k, you have a comparably priced (if not better priced) vehicle that severely outperforms competitors in the segment, drawing more of the performance-oriented crowd away from a segment that really only had 3 real options.

It was never meant to compete with a Porsche or any beautiful car out there on looks, the key execution of this car's looks were for it to look mechanical and industrial. Anybody who does not know this knows nothing about the GTR!

so if everyone else here are idiots and not you....how hypocritcal is for you to say the car was desighned to look industrial, and not beautiful....and call the people who think the car is ugly idiots......that is not logical...styling is subjective....as far as the price of thsi car it should be a 70-85,000 car, not anything over that. its interior appears to be nicer than the "base" 911, and im sure at such a low volume it will be less common than the corvette. It isnt an evo or sti, or an M3, or RS4 for several reasons. Those cars are all simply faster versions of another car, this car isnt that its ....a completely new car other than the engine which it shares with the G37, if this car was simply infiniti's answer to the M, or AMG and was based on the G37 and was a hyped g37 i would say 70 grand was way to much. but up to 85 grand doesnt sound ourageous for this car, even a bargain at that price hell the rs4 runs up to over 70 grand, the convertible is 80+ and cant touch this car neither can any of the cars that the RS4 competes with. in short 70-85,000 is a great price for this car

What your paying for is the the extensive R&D. Regardless of the nameplate, anything that achieves the kind of performance that has initially been reported is extraordinary. Even the best performance bargin to date, the Z06, can't match these figures for relatively the same price. I for one would never allow a nameplate to dictate how expensive or inexpensive a car should be. Instead, I would allow the merits of the car do that. Otherwise, I think it would be "snobish".

Anyways I am sure that Nissan is trying to directly compete with the Corvette and Porsche niche'. This may be a reason the base Vette increased power to 430BHP because it saw this car coming. This will be a good high-end sports car by what I have read. I still find it hard to believe it clocks 3.5 in 0-60. I also may warm up to the exterior when I see it in person.

As for dealer markups...you better believe it unless it gets word directly from Nissan to sell at sticker. I expect this car to sell at $75-80K. Mostly due to the exclusivity than actually worth.

If you had bought a NSX in 1991 for $55K. You can still sell it today for $20K easily with (<100K miles) after 16 years!!! Some sports car with followers depreciates very very slowly.

It is incredible that some of the so called car enthusiasts here can praise so much this Nissan for doing nothing more than what an EVO FQ400 does already for less money. How can somebody compare this econoboxes with incredible cars like Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini is mind blowing. I thought most of the people here are actually car enthusiast but judging after the comments posted here by the Japanese car fanbois it doesn't look like that's the case. These people are are so clueless about cars that they make any dialog impossible.

Friends, the quality of a car is NOT determined by the number of horsepower. A Nissan 350z has 300 hp, a Mustang GT has 300 hp yet a 250 HP VW R32 is a better car than both the Nissan and Mustang put together. The same things goes for the GT-R which is nothing more than what 350Z is in its price range, a cheap, tuner type of car capable of offering the type of performance you crave mostly in high-school, the same type of performance the 17 years old craved when they got their Evo. I'm not implying that they are bad cars since they they have created their own segment, all I'm saying is that people should understand the difference between a cheaply built econobox created so it can satisfy the need for speed, and technology marvels like Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini created to satisfy the human need for , excellence, creative genius and ultimate driving experience. You want the biggest amount of horsepower for your money you get a Z06 or a GT-R, you want a dream car that offers the complete driving experience for $70K, you get a Porsche 911.

I don't think that the premium will stop at $15K, especially in the car crazy western states, in 2000 Toyota dealers in Phoenix were getting $10K over sticker for the Sequoia. Here is a car that dealers were receiving 10 per month of, and you couldn't touch one for sticker for 18 months after the release.

$15K is a conservative estimate.

I would pay $90K-100K. As if the 911 Turbo wasn't enough of a bargain (faster than an LP640 or a 599 GTB for 1/3 the cost!), the GT-R measures up just as well in performance, and it will be incredible. Definitely worth it. I don't care about the badge, but the car.

Why not $130K like the Turbo? Well, it doesn't look quite as good, it's nowhere near as nice on the inside and you don't get the same owner's experience.

Otherwise, bring it on.

Note... for $100K, I'd probably get an R8 anyway (which I still might do--we'll see!), but that's what the GT-R is worth, and something tells me it won't sell for much less than that.

If the market bears 100K then Nissan should price it as such. Don't disappoint the potential buyers at 70K if Nissan knows that realistically each car will fetch 100K. This is deceptive marketing. 1500 buyers will be gouged by the dealers.

A lot of companies make fast cars. It is very difficult for me to see a buyer on the market for a 911 Turbo or a Maser stop by the local Nissan store.

Still, they will certainly sell the first thousand or so cars above MSRP. The resale value of these firsts will get hammered though. Can you imagine a used GT-R sold next to the used ex-rental Altima ?

I don't understand what people are thinking. You can't pay 80 thousand for a brand new skyline which has performance figures which dwarf those of its other similarly priced competitors from Europe?
Why can't people just get along and look at the big picture before commenting "Merkur look better than this toyota"... it just shows how ignorant and backwards you are, you can't even read nor can you recognize design if it hit you in the face at 300mph.

Don't forget that this is the first Skyline to be sold globally, and people have long been importing the Icon into the the States for prices exceeding those which many of you are saying is too much. People who have been waiting for this car to come to the states for SO long will buy it, and there will be a shortage of them very soon, like it or not.

As far as design goes, I'm not totally sure if I've fallen completely in love with it, nor have I fallen in love with the interior, but it's growing on me. When I first saw the concept I abhorred the GTR, now I'm starting to like it -- and contemplating buying one, especially in black :)
Whoever compared this to the FQ-400, that's also irritating, that car was limited to a run of 100 cars, limited to the UK....how is that fair to the rest of the world? So no, this concept has not been introduced to us yet.

Too much? Too little? Whatever it is, it's stirring up the automotive community, look at its hits compared to the rest of the topics spoken over, the last time I saw the number it was up to 167. Good publicity or not, this car is going to shake up the standards of what we think is acceptable as a 'fast car.'

I see things like, Infiniti should have released it as well... Please. That just makes you sound ignorant; The GTR is and should always be known as the NISSAN SKYLINE GTR. No matter what name they release it under. Infiniti was only CREATED because America didn't allow such a selection of imported vehicles in, so the Japanese companies had to make Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti, to appease legislations.

If they released the GTR under Infinti, all the enthusiasts who Actually appreciate and understand the GTR, the enthusiasts who recognize cars R32-34 as Legends, know that if it came as an infinti, it would have diminished the appreciation and image of the car.

If not, you'll have enthusiasts rebadging the car as a Nissan.

Ugly? Don't like it? Too bad..chances are, if you're on the highway, or hilly turns, or wherever you race, and you decide to pick a fight with this one.... you're going to lose. Not only is it fast in a straight line, it's fast in the twisties...and All of you can see its 7:38 nurburgring laptime if you don't believe me.

IMHO $90K for this car will be a bit much, as no Skyline has reached that price, then again, no skyline has ever been this fast from the factory...That's another point to remember, folks -- these are factory specs. Ive heard rumors that this thing will be hard to customize, as Nissan have

( Less than 3 weeks ) I still think 1500 units for U.S. will be gone in 2 weeks. Volume/demand ratio is urealistic. I have to wonder if this volume number for the U.S. is artifically kept low. wow alot of hatred in this thread, to me that means Nissan has definitely done something right here. As Ripper113 said, people were buying R33 and R34 GTRs from a company that imported them from Japan and they were paying close to 100k for those cars. I cannot imagine someone saying ~70K is too much for a car with an engine that is hand build in its entirety by a single engineer and a dual clutch tranny designed specifically for it. As for looks, the GTR was not designed to look trendy, it was designed to stand out and thats exactly what it does you might love it or hate it, but you will not be able to ignore it. This is exactly what Nissan was going for. Nissan will sell every copy that they offer here in the states, there is no doubt about it and some will pay far more than MSRP for them. Like it or not, this is a supercar and there is nothing short of a Z06 that will touch it in a straight line or the twisties for less than 100,000 and many in that price range will see the GTR's ugly rear end both in a straight line and around a track which is where this car was created to be. My only regret will be seeing this car at a dragstrip where it will still do quite well instead of on a racetrack or road course where it will be nearly untouchable.

Kudos to Nissan, if they hate you, then you have definitely done something right with the GTR. I cannot wait for my midlife crisis.......

"wow alot of hatred in this thread, to me that means Nissan has definitely done something right here"

Is not hate ..is pity and no, Nissan didn't get anything right like usual. Kudos to them for trying though...

They should price it at 100K like a "super car" should. Stop the deception!

Who would buy a 100k econobox?

....good luck getting it at MSRP.

Either the dealer will rip you off themselves with outrageous markups or being rap3 by the people who actually got one and sell it on ebay.

We as buyers by paying excess above MSRP prepetuate the gouging behavior by the dealers.

The fact that this forum is filled with a bunch of ignorant S.O.Bes just crack me up every time I read their postings. They don't have to know about what GTR really is -in fact, they could care less about it. Just as long as it's Japanese, it will never be as good as its Teutonic counterparts.

I really like the number 201.

In fact, my marketing plan for sellers has a 201 things I do to get their home sold.

And very soon I will buy a brand new Ferrari F430 Spyder and drive it at 201mph.

I did stand next to this car for 10 minutes while it slowly moved in a 360 in front of me. It is by far the most eye catching mix of muscle car and modern tech I have seen lately. It looks easier than a Porsche as far as daily goes.

Except it isnt a Porsche, and Everyone (especially your wife) is a label whore.

At the end of the day, this car DOES NOT compete with the likes of Lambo, Porsche and Ferrari. From a performance point of view, yes...no one can deny that, the figures are there. However, status, respect and price wise. NEVER.

People when considering the likes of Lambo and Ferrari will indeed visit and test drive cars from both showrooms. They WILL NEVER go into a Nissan dealership for the GT-R. It tends to be younger, racer types with less money to spend, yet still want the performance.

Exactly! How can people believe that a boy racer car like the GT-R that has performance figures comparable with cars that cost a lot more actually matches them in driving experience too. Is like saying that a Dodge SRT8 is as good as an Audi S8 because they have comparable performance figures. Wake up people! You need a lot more than numbers to create a super-car.

Absolutely True!

You gotta have a German or Italian name and an insanely cost of money. And don't forget the cup holder to a be supercar.

And there is nothing wrong with Datsun. It has ton of racing history. Here's one.

"Datsun Roadsters were raced to ten National SCCA Championships over a 20 year period. The first of these Champions, Jean LePlant and Paul Jaremko who secured Datsun's first win in SCCA competition, than later again at the wheel of a 1500 and Bob Sharp who collected Nissan's first National Championship.."

Those who diss Datsun are no carfans. Good luck trying to see those million dollar homes.

If you were going to risk going to prison over stealing a car, at least make it a worthwhile one.
