Forget 7-series sales being down, the real problem car at BMW is?

Dear 001,

Forget about 7 Series sales slumping.

Look at the Z4!

They sold 317 last month versus 1520 in November 2003.

Ouch! That car is seriously hurting in the market - and it's relatively new.

And that's with all the giveaway leases to BMW dealer salespeople and dealer service loaner cars thrown in to the sales figures!

Look for some drastic measures coming to address this problem shortly.

Isn't an engine upgrade (from the E90 3 Series)on the way? Also, I have driven all the BMW's in the current lineup and the Z4 has the best handling feel (and a great tranny). But I guess Eric is right about the roadster market. Oh - and BMW dealerships do have nice service if you are a friendly customer - I see quite many demanding crybabies when my car is in service!

The Z4 is a hodgepodge of design elements. I noticed in the dealer lot that Z4s not equipped with fog lights have a blank spot covered with a plain black plastic piece. This is unaccaptable in a car costing 40 large. I could go on, from the retarded cut lines from the front fenders up to the doors, the confused rear end treatment, the clusterbleep taillights, etc, etc. This is unfortunate because the car is a blast to drive.

The sales numbers for both BMW and M-B were posted last week. The Z4 has been on a downward slide for a few months.

Open your eyes, be creative, don't let Toyota make you think cars all need to look horribly rational. The Z4 is a very impressive car to look at, a low, wide stance, menacing flanks, an extremely modern and stunningly original design.

Not to contradict myself, but there is more than a hint of AC Cobra in the Z4, the way the door shape drops downwards, bisecting the wide rear arches. It is subtle, but highly effective.

Buy a Miata if you wish, but don't expect any admiring glances.
