Wait for the Subaru R1e, (available in Japan since 2003), 125 miles one charge range, top speed 62 mph.

Wow, 62 mph. But it probably takes 4.7 minutes to get to that speed. What fun. Isn't Tesla an '80's hair band?

So how much would it cost to recharge an electric car?

The cost depends on how much your local utility charges you for electricity and if you have a high (power density) efficiency or low (power density) efficiency battery system. With utilities the cost varies in peak use hours and low utilization hours.
Depending on what method is used to produce electricity it can cost 2 cents to 20 cents per kilowatt hour. High power density batteries (longer charger range) will cost less than 2 cents per mile.
Low power density batteries (shorter charge range) will cost less than 11 cents per mile. Gasoline vehicle assuming cost of $3.00 per gallon, yielding 20 miles/gallon with a 20 gallon tank will cost 15 cents per mile giving you a range of 400 miles for $60.00 full tank. In a Tesla Roadster will cost you less than $8.00, but gasoline vehicle will match it in places like Caracas, Venezuela and Lagos, Nigeria where gasoline cost less than 40 cent per gallon but since they also use crude cheaper oil to produce cheaper electricity the Tesla Roadster still comes out cheaper.

Yes. I agree [sarcasm]. It is so important for all Americans to continue to own cars that go at least forty mph over the maximum speed limit while using 22 million barrels of oil per day. So important in fact, that we should ignore all possible scenarios that could rid us of oil dependence. I mean--we're only talking about making nations richer every year that control the oil and increasingly wishing for our demise as we continue to demand from them to send us more of our share of their oil. If Russia, Venezuela, and Iran get together and hold back oil, we'll have more problems than our citizens dealing with going only fifty miles per hour. Increasingly, in case any one hasn't noticed, Russia, Venezuela, Iran, and other oil producers are becoming more anti-American, and we're increasingly dependent on their oil for our economic survival. And as this impending, possible scenario becomes ever closer to a reality, we continue to squabble over meaningless, American ideals to identify ourselves. Items such as 4-wd pickups, fast cars, crotch rocket motorcycles, and jet skis are seen as items that identify our American status. Personally, I don't see how these luxury items could be so important to our society that we risk total economic collapse in order to keep them!
