Originally Porsche wanted to launch the Cayenne hybrid SUV alongside the Audi Q7 hybrid which is set to arrive in 2008. Porsche had planned to launch the car right before the Audi Q7 hybrid hit the roads in order not to get overlooked. But now it seems Porsche executives are unsure about the sales prospects for a Porsche hybrid, pushing back launch dates.

Porsche invented the hybrid.

"In 1901, while employed at Lohner Coach Factory, Ferdinand Porsche designed the "Mixte", a series-hybrid vehicle based off his earlier "System Lohner-Porsche" electric carriage. The Mixte broke several Austrian speed records, and also won the Exelberg Rally in 1901 with Porsche himself driving. The Mixte used a gasoline engine powering a generator, which in turn powered electric hub motors, with a small battery pack for reliability. It had a range of 50 km, a top speed of 50 km/h and a power of 5.22 kW during 20 minutes."

The Cayenne Hybrid should not exist. If the RX400h serves as any indication, it does have great sales prospects, but the diehard Porsche fan base would be further insulted. Those 911 buyers are a tough bunch to please; once they're hooked on Porsche sports cars, they can't go to anything else, but at the same time they want to make sure their favorite company remains exclusive and unique.
