*Fitted with Dynamic Package. ** Electronically-limited

For the first time in BMW’s history, an entire model range is turbocharged with the X6 offering a quartet of forced induction powerplants. The range flagship is an all-new twin-turbocharged V8 producing 408hp at 5,500rpm. The 4,395cc engine makes the BMW X6 xDrive50i the most powerful production X model BMW has ever produced. Its 600Nm of torque from 1,800rpm through to 4,500rpm propels the X6 from zero to 62mph in 5.4 seconds. Top speed has been electronically-limited to 155mph. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 22.6mpg.

To optimise packaging, the configuration of the new V8 engine is unique too. It is the first engine in the world to locate twin-turbochargers and a catalytic converter within the vee of the engine. The revolutionary new engine design allowed engineers to fit the twin-turbochargers needed for increased performance without having to reconfigure the double wishbone front suspension.

To complement the outstanding performance figures of the new 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged X6, it is joined by the X6 xDrive35i powered by the International Engine of the Year 2007 winner. The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine already available in the 1 and 3 Series now comes to the X6. Offering 306hp from its 2,979cc powerplant, the BMW X6 xDrive35i produces peak power at 5,800rpm. With peak torque of 400Nm from 1,300rpm through to 5,000rpm, it also offers the driver a seamless wave of acceleration from near idle.

This award-winning engineering results in a vehicle that can sprint from zero to 62mph in 6.7 seconds before going on to a top speed of 149mph. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 25.9mpg with CO2 emissions of 262g/km.

It is the diesel-powered cars that are predicted to be the biggest selling variants in the UK. The BMW X6 xDrive30d is powered by a single-turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine featuring third-generation common-rail fuel injection and producing 235hp at 4,000rpm. The 2,993cc unit achieves 520Nm of torque from 2,000rpm through to 2,750rpm. This helps deliver a zero to 62mph time of 8.0 seconds before going on to a top speed of 137mph (with the Dynamic Package fitted*). The BMW X6 xDrive30d still achieves 34.4mpg on the combined cycle. Emissions of just 217g/km CO2 ensure the car falls into the Band F Vehicle Excise Duty tier.

*Dynamic Package consists of unique 19-inch alloy wheels, Anthracite headlining, mesh lower front grilles in titanium colour, Nevada leather upholstery, fully electric seat adjustment, High-gloss Shadowline and Sports seats.

Blending high performance with class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions is also a trait of the BMW X6 xDrive35d. Powered by an award-winning twin-turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine with third generation common-rail technology, the X6 xDrive35d produces 286hp at 4,400rpm. Peak torque is 580Nm and this is attained from 1,750rpm through to 2,250rpm. The near instantaneous peak torque figure delivers swift acceleration in all situations. Zero to 62mph is achieved in 6.9 seconds before the vehicle continues on to a top speed of 147mph. Fuel consumption is equally impressive with the X6 xDrive35d returning 34.0mpg on the combined cycle and emitting 220g/km CO2 emissions – again making it a Band F Vehicle Excise Duty tier BMW.

EfficientDynamics:
The BMW X6 is aimed at the enthusiastic driver and, courtesy of BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology, its all round performance is enhanced by a number of intelligent features.

Brake Energy Regeneration, incorporating an Intelligent Alternator Control and an Absorbent Glass Mat battery to recycle previously lost energy, ensures unrivalled fuel consumption in the X6. This is achieved as the alternator reduces drag on the engine by only engaging when required to charge the battery. Normally a traditional alternator is constantly draining power from the engine. Additionally, the energy generated by the engine on over-run (under braking or descending a hill) was also previously wasted. Now this lost energy is used by the alternator to charge the battery.

Reduced rolling resistance tyres featuring special heat resistant, anti-distortion materials in the tread and sidewalls lower emissions and improve fuel efficiency on the X6. The Sports Activity Coupé comes with low friction transmission fluids for efficient running and active aerodynamics to regulate air flow to the engine. This enables the engine to always work at its optimum efficiency for the benefit of power and economy. Petrol-powered X6s also feature high-precision direct injection for the optimum in combustion characteristics.

Dynamic Performance Control:
Twinned with BMW’s benchmark xDrive four-wheel-drive system, Dynamic Performance Control makes its world debut on the BMW X6. Dynamic Performance Control works by spreading drive forces from side to side at the two rear wheels as required in a given situation.

Dynamic Performance Control is unique. It is the only system of its kind in the world able to provide its stabilising effect both under power and with the engine on overrun. The system works by detecting possible over- or understeer of the vehicle in, for example, a bend. When this occurs Dynamic Performance Control will vary the distribution of drive forces between the wheels for perfect stability, dynamic traction, and forward motion. This is achieved by transferring additional wheel speed to the outer rear wheel to push the car round the corner rather than applying brake force to the inner wheels as currently happens with traditional stability control systems.

In the process, Dynamic Performance Control improves driving stability at all speeds, not only ensuring maximum traction when pulling away and precise control when entering a bend, but also higher levels of lateral acceleration and optimum directional stability when accelerating out of the bend.

Design:
The BMW X6 is the third X model to be launched by BMW. The four-seat BMW X6 is aimed at a different customer to X3 and X5 owners, appealing to the driver who enjoys the command driving position, but one that also savours the characteristics of a sports car.

The exterior design of the X6 is a bold statement of that customer intent. From the front, large air intakes positioned on the outer reaches of the front bumper highlight the cooling requirements of the high-performance engine. The contour of the central air intake, in addition, visually widens the car for a more sporting appearance.

From the side, the unique design and proportions of the BMW X6 are striking. Its tapering roofline and long rear body overhang give the car a stretched coupé silhouette. To accentuate this, the roofline reaches its highest point directly behind the steering wheel tapering off to the rear to emphasise the dynamic wedge shape of the car. Flared wheel arches, standard 19-inch light-alloy wheels and a wide rear track all serve to underscore the vehicle’s sporting intent.

Equipment highlights:
All BMW X6s models come with a wealth of equipment as standard including 19-inch alloy wheels, Dynamic Performance Control, xDrive four-wheel-drive, Dynamic Stability Control+, xenon headlights, front and rear Park Distance Control, Sports suspension and a six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddles.

Inside, standard equipment highlights include part electric seat adjustment, 6.5-inch colour display screen with iDrive controller, two-zone climate control and ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear. The X6 xDrive50i comes as standard with a different style of 19-inch alloy wheel, self-levelling rear suspension, angular exhaust tailpipes, a redesigned kidney grille and side window surround, and Nevada leather upholstery.

Optional highlights of the X6 include BMW’s Adaptive Drive handling package, Active Steering, Head-up Display, Adaptive Headlights, High-beam Assistant, Reversing Camera and four-zone climate control.

The BMW X6 launches in May, 2008 with the X6 xDrive30d, xDrive35i and xDrive35d. The X6 xDrive50i goes on sale later in the year. Prices for this model will be announced nearer the time.

I'm the opposite. I have a strong dislike for BMW for various reasons but I really like the X6 as a practical luxury vehicle for winter driving.

I know many may disagree, but I a feeling that between this and the 1 series, BMW could have a couple of flops on their hands. I am sure they will drive great, as the 1 series has already proven. But I do think they made a real mistake with pricing on 1, ans styling on this. we'll see what happens. I dont know, I do really like BMW's but part of me is hoping the Golden Child of auto industry journalists screws up a bit.

how so...the 1-series weighs less, probably costs less to manufacture, and offers the same engines as the 3 series...but comes in equal or higher?

very little to do with the US dollar in my opinion, it's more of a poor excuse everyone's using to relate to the price.

they know the 1-series will sell, especially the 128i to younger drivers, as their parents will most liekly purchase as a first vehicle...or even themselves purchasing as a new car. they are stretching the profits...

the 1-series should start no more than a 23-25k and end no higher than 35k...if it couldn't fall between that range, standard equipment and options need to be reassesed.

the m-package only comes with the 135i...i can understand a hike with that. but the 128? it comes with leatherette, leather is $1500, there is no sport suspension. its a base model with pwr windows/locks/mirrors a/c and radio for $29,500, including the destination charge.

i'm sorry, but you say it is expected for luxury brand, but where is the luxury? no leather/wood/etc. and the famous sports suspension isn't even their for you to claim it's worth the shit and giggles because it will drive like a BMW should.

to get the 128 into luxury, you're looking upward of $32-33k...and that's really disappointing!

and here's the kicker, a fully loaded 135i is going to cost you around $45k...build one on BMWusa.com if you don't believe me.

with leather and the sports suspension, the 135i jumps to 40k...ridiculous!

The X6 is a really sharp vehicle. In regards to the 1-series price, how is it over the top. A mini Cooper S fully equipped is over $32k and that is not even without the works package, and it still sells like hot cakes. Try going to a mini dealer and finding them discount it more than $500. I just priced out a Audi A3 3.2S line with Nav, bluetooth, cold weather, titanium pack and it came out to $42,450 MSRP. It is alot slower than the 135 but people say the 135 is too much money. The 135 priced out loaded is $44,340 with similar equipment to the Audi. That is alot of car for the money. The fact that Dinan offers a software upgrade to bum Hp to over 350 and torque to over 400, only $2k more without any warranty implications is incredible.

We already have alot of orders for the 1-series. Especially the 128, which will sell like hot cakes. BMW will be limiting availabilty of the 1-series, which will keep the demand high.

fast:

personally, it's not much offered outside the motor.

the 135i doesnt appeal in looks, that's one issue, then there is the driving capablity. the 135 is a beast, when going straight...but as compared in a previous test (against the TT/GTI)it loses its "heritage" in driving when the twisties come about.

to me, so many are expecting this to be such a GREAT vehicle, but what besides the motor, is great about it?

maybe that's where the cost issue comes into play...if you're paying 45k for this vehicle, i assume you would believe this is a GREAT vehicle becuase of its cost.

far from it in my opinion!

"to get the 128 into luxury, you're looking upward of $32-33k...and that's really disappointing!"

But it's pretty obvious that that would happen. It's where the market is going. You can't get a 328i for $32K these days. It just doesn't happen. That's where the 1 Series comes in--it fills the slot where the 3 Series was ten years ago.

BTW: a 335i can go over $50K. STILL more than the 135i.

I would personally buy a 335i over a 135i, but I can see why someone would want a 1 instead.

You've posted this before, but that is WRONG. It's simply incorrect. Every OTHER review has loved the 1er for its incredible handling, agility and balance. Go drive one yourself before you make silly assumptions.

this is what Bangle wanted to do with his imagination, was it not? he had all go on this design and new "class/segment"

it's neither a car nor suv but an SAV...sports activity coupe. they better be entering this thing into some rally's or it really serves no purpose... afterall, it is a sports activity coupe!

How much is a similarly equipped X5 in the UK, for reference?

I'm puzzled at how much the X6 will cost here. Probably ~$65K for the 4.0TT, $55K for the 3.0TT.

Well if we take the base, 3.0 diesel in an X5, which comes with: 18 inch wheels, part electric seats, cloth upholstery, single Cd player, park distance control, 5 seats, and not much else, it costs 40525 pounds, on the road (includes tax).
A base, 3.0d X6, which has 19 inch wheels, and the same equipment as the X5 except less space and 4 seats will cost 41955 pounds.
1400 pounds more for less space and an inch-bigger wheels?

Interestingly, the X6 is less economical (by 0.5 mpg), only 0.1 second quicker to 60, and has the same Co2 emissions. So much for it being much lighter.

For comparison, a 530d touring costs 37000 pounds, does 0-62 in 7 seconds, gets 41 mpg (7 more than X5/X6), has CO2 emissons of just 180, and has exactly the same equipment. It will also handle better and has a larger boot.
Why do people pay 3000 pounds more for AWD they never use?

All BMWs bar M-models (and possibly V8s) and the 7 series have cloth as standard.
Merc and Audi offer leather as standard on their SUVs, BMW is just very stingy.

Nobody buys cloth though, i don't know why they have it. I think all X5s will have leather, option or not.

only m & m sport cars below the 5 series come with cloth std. That means 1/3/x3 & 5 m-sport comes with cloth std. 5/x5 come with leatherette and 7 comes with leather std. m/m sports come with cloth (nice cloth imho) becuase it provide better lateral grip than leather/leatherette.

get ur facts straight rupert

I like it!! I am a BMW fan boy, I admit it. I am not real old school like some people though. A lot of people are pissed that they changed the styling from 1992!!
This vehicle is going to be limited and segmented to males that earn $200k plus a year. I dont like people in my cars, so I dont care how many people this fits. The car pricing is going to be like 6 series coupe pricing. Range Rover is coming out with a coupe range rover. They just beat them to the punch.
As for the 1 series pricing. BMW is not making a volume car here people. The base price is understandable, but some of the packages are a little high, I admit. I priced out a VW the other day and it was $33,000!! I think that is rediculous for any VW. I mean, wranglers get up to $35,000. Every car is getting expensive, not just the 1 series.
