I'm thinking minimal impact on the U.S. market but I hope they sell them real cheap in Canada where foreign and domestic manufacturers are still ripping us off with unjustified high prices even though our dollar is at par with the U.S. dollar. These rip-off artists need to be taught a real lesson in fair commercial practices.

If they come into the US market priced at or under the Ford Ranger....You have NO IDEA how much BUTT they are going to kick.

How old is the design of the Ranger..1983?

(Ford says that 2009 is the last year for the Ranger..None too soon..Ford Australia did a Re-design 2 or 3 years ago...will we get it here?)

I have seen marketing studies, that show that there is a LARGE market for a "mini truck". Since what was once "mini" is now more like "mid size"

One thing for sure, what ever Mahindra brings to market...will have a better "ride & drive" than the Ranger (Heck, their TRACTORS have a better ride & drive!)

Second of all, can you tell me why the Indian economy is growing so fast and why foreign imports are going there? If they are, why shouldn't the Indian auto companies stand a chance against them?

Third of all, Tata bought Jaguar and LR for 2 billion $$$! which is not cheap and those companies are struggling. So I think that Tata can turn them into a profit if they are willing to buy them at that price. Who says jaguar and LR have new technologies? They (at least jaguar) have had the same freaking models for the last 10 years I think!

Fourth of all, Tata and the other Indian companies have been around for a while and they have been a lot more reliable than the European and American cars. So I think that they DO have imagination, research & development, and concept of quality standards.

Fifth of all, spell IMAGINATION correctly!

What I thought was interesting is that they are developing a diesel just for the US market. Meaning it will pass strict US emissions. It will be the only small truck with an available diesel. Now that is a good nitch. Lets see if they learned from yugo and make it road worthy :)

Mahindra will have some stiff competition form Tata. Since the economy and education in India is booming and as per wikipedia its nominal per capita GDP has just surpassed Kenya and Nigeria and it’s almost on par with Zimbabwe, also the literacy rate has dramatically increased and its almost at 72% for men and 44% for women. As a result India’s Tata Corporation is expanding and came up with a new aggressive sales strategy called ATP aka Animal Trade-in Program. Where you can trade in your donkey or goat and receive a 12000 rupee discount for a donkey and 10000 rupee discount for a goat towards a new Tata. This translates on average to about $250 in savings towards the car which will cost about 120000 rupees or $3000. By 2013 Tata expects 80000000 of these marvels of Indian engineering on India’s roads. In the mean time Tata is hoping to acquire Jaguar to bolster its name and steal western technology so they can start selling their $3000 Tata’s world wide by 2015. Mahindra wants to do the same with trucks.

They are best described as shitty cars. Designed and made for people who were before on motorcycles and family/cargo carrying small minivans.

Chineese are much better (which even failed to pass some safety tests). Now just imagine exactly what will be Indian car's standars.

but i wish them good luck. Lately they have partenerd with some european brands like Tata--Mercedes and Mahindra--Renault....etc. Hopefully they'll be able to compete in 20 years time whereas chinese in 10 years.

First of all you can never compare a 3rd world country like India with 1.2 billion people to much smaller quality obsessed countries like Japan or Korea that alone makes you stupid. India's economy is growing due to its massive uncontrolled population growth and greedy western corporations which are investing billions of dollars to increase their profits for cheap labor and extremely low safety and environmental standards. What they get in return is Indians coping their products, then down the road selling them back to the west with even less quality and costs. Like the Chinese have done successfully in recent years. Due to the massive population and western investments some of these companies have enough purchasing power to buy struggling western companies like Jaguar to bolster their image and to steal their technology so they can sell outside of India where the money is. All western countries with much smaller populations then India built up their economies by inventing and selling most of their products to themselves without any significant outside investments following strict safety laws, regulations and environmental standards at the same time paying a fair wage to their workers. India doesn’t care about any of these and its getting billions of dollars in investments from the greedy western corporations. Also India dose not invent they copy everything they can get their hands on. Regarding math, science and engineering India’s only success comes from the elite 2% of the population living or educated in the west. Please prove me wrong because I cannot think of any sophisticated product or any automotive contributions produced with high quality manufacturing invented and built in India.

Dream on Mahinda and Mahindra, who on earth is going to buy the whacky looking SUV that they are going to bring to US, other than those weird Indians, who are just so patriotic that they'll even buy a cheaper quality product just because it is from India. But to all westerners, India is developing fast, and especially the upper class has a lifestyle that even millionaires in US can not afford. And please do not disrespect or disregard the Indians, because Indians are capable of greatness, they just need more opportunities, a bit more time for transition, and a bit more political reform, do not underestimate India, because they certainly got brainiest young students of the world, they just need to improve in higher level education and need to create more opportunities, so their brains don't go to foreign for jobs, and pretty soon India will become the greatest nation on plane. But as for Indian cars, i still have my reservations.

Don't sugar coat things and get with reality, most of India’s wealth is its population and ties to England by being it colony at one point, funny how it wasn't the other way since India is much bigger then England. Anyway, if you take a poor African county like Ethiopia and multiply its population to equal that of India you will also get a rich country as a whole with some science and industry successes. As per Dugit's comment "no one thought Germany would become the automobile empire after WWI." WOW don't you know Germany was an automotive empire before WWI Germany built the first internal combustion automobile and invented the combustion engine as we know today well before WWI. Please tell me what India invented and not that some Indian company is making software for some f1 team. Germany is a country with 80 million people and is the richest country in Europe also Germany won a total of 98 Nobel prizes compared to India's total of 11 with a population of 1.2 billion and from what I understand some of them were not even true Indian citizens. As per pschera01's comment you basically proved my point above. Just so you know steel has been made in 3rd world countries for thousands of years and India's steel industry will boom due to huge environmental hurdles in the west.
By the way I don’t have anything against Indians as a race there are lots of very successful highly educated Indians in this world. I just don’t like countries that get wealthy at the expense of jobs in the west and the environment

True per capita Luxemburg is the richest country in the world but as a whole Germany is the richest country in Europe. Luxembourg only has a population of about 500,000 people and together with Ireland they have invented more then India has which has 260 times their population.

If everyone is through NATION bashing, I would like to add that "Diesel Power Magazine" reported about six months ago that Mahindra announced they would bring a pickup and SUV to North America with both gasoline and DIESEL POWERED options. I wonder why the diesel option wasn't mentioned in this article. There are lots of gas-guzzler small pickups already here. A fuel-efficient diesel; now that is news!

If they bring a modern, reliable, 4-cylinder diesel pickup to America; I don't care what free nation builds the dang thing. I'll buy it and run biodiesel as a renewable, alternative fuel.

Holy $hit guys...lets now make this a Race War!!! Indians and Americans are just as hard working. I think it is interesting to see different Auto makes from around the World and see them try to break into the US market (most lucrative). The up side is that consumers will have a larger variety of vehicles to choose from. The down side is mostly for the auto makers having to much competition and losing their overall market share.

America and India have nothing in common. India is more like a poor China and well behind the Chinese in most industries. Indians selling knockoff crappy vehicles in the west will only benefit India, hurt the environment and take western jobs. With India's economy booming and such a small percentage of the 1.2 billion people owning cars. Tata and Mahindra should get control of their own market first, then once they improve their quality and compete on equal environmental, safety and wage terms they can start selling here. Talking about hard work, most Indians hate hard physical labor. That would explain the one silver medal India won in the last summer Olympics. I also never see any Indian immigrants working in construction or do any physical labor for that matter. An Indian guy also told me Indians like sales jobs where they can earn a quick buck by ripping people off. Like in Manhattan, where mostly Indian electronics salesman sell $200 Best Buy items for sometimes more then $600. Go see it for yourself. Indians also like security guard or cab driving jobs which may be dangerous, but you sit on your ass all day so it’s not physical. When I was in collage I worked in landscaping to pay for school, it paid well but it was very physical. I'm still waiting on that massive list of Indian inventions, and automotive contributions made in India and not by westernized Indian immigrants living in the west. ZZZZZZZzzzzzz.....
