Toyota Says They Will Be Number One In 2008, Can They Do it?

Who knows, maybe they can. I think they have their priorities mixed up. Make money now while you can Toyota, before whats left of your quality image dwindles away slowly.

I think once you get this big, the difficulties of maintaining everything on an even keel are much more difficult.

They won't get any help from me until they start pricing the product fairly in Canada.

The market is changing rapidly, and Toyota's 'once sterling' reputation for quality/reliability is certainly not what it once was, leaving ample opportunity for many companies to 'knock them off their mantel'.

It appears in their quest for great sales numbers, they've lost focus (the aforementioned quality/reliability), and the damage done will not be forgotten (by the average consumer) anytime soon.

It's going to be an uphill battle...

Can Toyota be #1 in 2008? Of course they can!! As long as they keep getting help from US's big 3 (especially GM) by making the same crappy cars with different names they've been making for the past 25 years. Americans love to complain about people not buying domestics cars. Well, when quality and reliability improves on them, then I'll have one parked on my driveway. Meanwhile, I'll keep spending MY money on the ones that offer me so.

i think toyota's focus on volume is a big mistake.

growth at the expense of quality (combined with increasingly boring products) is a recipe for disaster. people buy toyota products SPECIFICALLY for reliability. and when that goes, there's not much left (especially with the biggest seller camry which is going up against superior products like the malibu and accord).

Who said they're compromising quality for profit? Yes, they've gone down in quality in the last few years. But, to claim that they are going to do the same is totally incorrect.

First, they have lower quality than others and they HAVE acknowledged their quality problems. Why do you think they decided to hold back on making more plants earlier this year? THIS IS WHY! You make a mistake, you identify it, and you fix it. They have seen it and are trying to fix it.

I think most here has forgotten what's put Toyota in this position in the first place: constantly delivering on quality. Yes, they've had slip-ups, and will probably have more, but overall, people still think of Toyota when you mention the word "quality," and for good reason. Most who have commented here so far are hyping up the "quality downhill" arguments a little too much without warrant, but with very transparent motives...

Its easy to live with your eyes closed. The rest of us havent missed any of many recent recalls :)

I love my mustang for many reasons, none of which youll understand. Its fun to drive. Pretty inexpensive to drive as well. Its a great design, its loud, and decently quick. It fits my personality well, which I cant say for anything toyota has ever made. They make road appliances. Lexus makes comfortable road appliances. While I dont hate them for it, Ill never drive one.
I can care less if they become #1, honestly. I dont have any bias be it German, Japanese, or American. I go with whatever is visually and vicerally pleasing.
My 300zx is a neat car, but the mustang is alot more fun to drive.
