Will the Lexus LF-A tear the GT2 and GT-R to shreads?
The king is dead, long live the king! Lexus’ long-awaited LF-A has unofficially smashed the lap record at Germany’s Nürburgring, with a time of seven minutes, 24 seconds.

That beats Porsche’s new GT2 by a second and makes the Lexus the King of the ’Ring. Company insiders have revealed that a 4.8-litre V10 – co-developed with Yamaha – powered the record-breaking test mule. It revs to 9,000rpm and pumps out 552bhp. Combined with a highly aerodynamic body, it should enable the LF-A to hit 210mph.

Wait a minute.

Remember my post of GT-R running 7:15 at Nurburgring? It's sourced from the same magazine AUTO EXPRESS.

Now, eventually GT-R runs officially at 7:38, so maybe we should add some 20 seconds to 7:24 and you'll get 7:44, which I think will be more likely for an NA RWD weighing probably at 3,500 lb(I guess).

This verifies what I clocked at the Nurburgring 4 1/2 months ago as I posted on this site. I'm employed as an auto engineer with a competing company and 4 of us were at the track when this Lexus/Toyota(?) was testing. As I posted in August the times we recorded the LF-A in several sectors of the track were the fastest all of us had ever witnessed. We knew it was a high-powered V10, but what really surprised us was the incredible handling in fast bends. I stated at the time it was faster than the Porsche GT3 RS, but from today's report it seems it's faster than even the Porsche GT2. I am impressed!

toyota/lexus is doing it rite, they are killing 2 bids with one stone. producing a supercar whilst learning the advanced aspects of headflow/porting/etc from Yamaha. they will no doubt take this as a elarning class to build on. and i'm sure Yamaha has no issues with it being that they assisted in producing the expected beast this is sought to be.

This Flylow character sounds like an idiot. I'm sorry, but putting down Ferrari and Renault?

Ferrari and Renault both have a very successful Formula 1 history. They also have produced very innovative cars with global appeal. You can slam Renault, Citroen and Peugeot all you want, but the fact remains that the French have equally contributed a great share of innovations and technology to the automotive world - moreso than Toyota, which simply build affordable and reliable cars but never even ventured into daring designs or technology.

And WRC is not "true racing" as you defined it. WRC is about strategy, endurance and handling mainly. Speed is not really of importance. Heck, a 1950s Mercedes 190D (Diesel) won the South Africa Rally in the late 1950s beating out faster competitors. "True racing", as is generally considered by the purists, pertains to Formula 1, Le Mans, Mille Miglia, Carrera Panamericana etc.

Toyota hasn't done well in any of these. They have not even participated in them with the exception of F1 and Le Mans. Lexus? What motorsport heritage does Lexus have? None.

IF this time is true (which I doubt), then expect it to be slower once they put in all the electronics and luxuries that they will obviously put in.
I'm speculating (as is everyone as we know nothing about this car) that it didn't have proper seats, airbags, safety stuff, carpets, sound/heat insulation and all the electronic fripperies that we have come to expect.
I expect the real LF-A to have perhaps a bit less hp (500-520) rev to about 8500 (still pretty good), and not be quite as fast as this.

One thing confuses me - where will this car fit? Surely it makes more sense to walk before they run and position it as at the most a 911 turbo fighter?? Isn't an Enzo/Lambo-fighter a bit of a grand start?? Would people pay that much for a Lexus? It seems to me that they have gotten ahead of themselves...

I agree with all your points flylow but, I'm gonna have to stop you at one point!

"spending a few billion $ to sell 300 supercars a year is just for fun. if it means they lose money, they don't care."

Toyota may be the richest company but, don't think that they will spend few billion dollars "just for fun". That is NOT their business model! Their core principal is to eliminate waste (muda) from any manufacturing process to any design to any business strategy so, with that being said, they will never take a risk that's going to cost them billions of dollars even if they're the richest. Trust me, I've spent countless hours working at Toyota doing these things.

Cmon! You really have to bring up the risk taking of hybrid technology?

To an outsider it seems like a risk "just for fun" but, if you were an insider you'd know how much research/development/market scouting went into developing the hybrid. The hybrid project was not "just for fun", it was a calculated risk based on very detailed research on the needs. The LF-A may not provide the need for improving technology. Hybrid was a technological improvement and that's why they are implementing it in so many of their models. The LF-A is not considered a technological improvement as the hybrid, and hence, the risk factor is TOTALLY different for the two. Therefore, the hybrid project was not "just for fun" by spending billions of dollars. You need to look at the kind of project it is.

I'm not saying that the LF-A will not sell because I think it will. And I'm sure Lexus has done their homework on the LF-A to support its production capabilities. But, trust me, Toyota/Lexus will not just spend billions of dollars just for fun, it just isn't part of their business model.

^^^ I think what he's trying to point out is the distribution of the company. You can't argue with him by pointing out the distribution of the race of people within a company!

By that logic you can also argue about the design of Aston Martin's V8 Vantage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aston_Martin_V8_Vantage_%282005%29

1. What constitutes a true factory team, as opposed to a "false" factory team?

2. If Toyota is indeed, in your words, a true factory team, that would make it even more pathetic, would it not? Having factory resource but not doing anything.

I just want you to think about that... I'm not knocking on Toyota, I'm just saying that your comments make Toyota look bad.

i will say a great job done

but, I would love to see it post the same time with normal tires, passing emission requirements, having a full interior with all of the luxury, and all other things.

So far specs show nothing that would make it seconds faster than cars with more horepower and less weight.

PRODUCTION GT2 makes 530hp, 505lb ft.

a PROTOTYPE LFA which lexus won't confirm productioon of makes a SPECULATIVE 552hp.

which one is a fact? and which one is just a rumour?

As always, we have the usual suspects hating. When there's news about the R8 or any European supercar all the haters have nothing to say but praise. When the GT-R or LF-A is mentioned they all come out in droves saying the same pointless and ignorant comments, trying to downplay other companies' achievements. It takes a small person...

Yes, Toyota has won so "many important races".

NOT

The list of Toyota victories in motorsport is largely populated by insignificant races in Asia where they compete against locally tuned Honda's or Daihatsu's (thrown in for sarcasm). Nothing exciting or impressive about that. I've lived in Asia, I've seen these races upclose and let me tell you, nobody has ever heard of the "Bacolod Toyota Street Challenge". Mention LeMans and you instantly have the attention of a true enthusiast.

BMW on the other hand has won many important races where it counts. The same applies to Mercedes and Porsche, both of which were the dominating force in German motorsports followed by Audi.

Personally, I don't give a hoot about heritage and the time a company has spent in races. What counts is current innovation, future plans, and business strategy. If you want to talk about heritage than look at Koenigsegg.

Just because other companies have done it for years don't mean that new starters can't get a chance. And automotive technology has lagged so far behind compared to other industry, its not even funny.

Its simple. Toyota doesnt compare to porsche in racing. I do not know why you guys need to explain anything. Its just fact. I don't know how many races Toyota participates in, but Porsche has won over 43,000 races. Thats a FACT! Compare Toyota's racing to BMW, Audi, Merc, whatever, but not Porsche. Porsche is in a league of their own...

Dude, why are you always bringing up achievements of different countries? I was talking about the ENTIRE automotive industry, which includes EVERYBODY! NOT BY A PARTICULAR COUNTRY!

And the links you provided are ALL useless because they don't have anything in significance to the subject.

I can give you one solid comparison and you can start doing your search on it, if you want! Compare the achievements in computer industry vs. automotive. OR compare aerospace vs. automotive, just to name a few. The automotive is improving now but, up until now, there was nothing exciting.

MidEngine, you still don't get it do you?

I know US is big in computer and aerospace. But, I'm not trying to compare achievements of individual countries! I don't CARE which country excels in what field. I'm comparing INDUSTRIES. NOT countries who have more Nobel laureates than others'. My point was that the rate of growth in automotive has been less than other industries! Which is IRRELEVANT to any country!

MidEngine: "How much racing heritage (numbers of championships and wins) do these cars have? None. That's what p*sses me off. The hype for cars that have never won anything unlike Porsche's 911 that has been winning championships for decades."

Just because a car doesn't have a history yet doesn't mean anything. The Porsche 911 when it was first released didn't have a history yet either. Every historic and legendary car was new at some point, too.

"It revs to 9,000rpm and pumps out 552bhp. Combined with a highly aerodynamic body, it should enable the LF-A to hit 210mph"

(so it won't be hard to imagine that) all these will make it ATLEAST 1 second faster to 0-60 than the IS-F. That's 3.2 second which makes LF-A quicker than the GT-R (3.3sec till now).

Plus a design which is better than the GTR with Lexus lever of Interiors and quality.

Awesome job Lexus.

The car was not homologated at the moment, isn't it? I'm not sure that the final vehicle with emission controls can do it. Let's wait for the final serial model, I have doubt of the performance. It happened lot of case that the prototypes performance is outstanding, but the final model with catalyc converters, with comfort equipments (airco, audio, power seats...) performance was far away from the ideal.

Hey, Lexus Admirer, lets pick something other than motorsports to talk about, because you know nothing about it.

Lemme give you a few lessons on motorsports:

1. Porsche was in F1 in the 1980s, ie before you were born, and they won 2 constructors' champion. I don't know what you call success, but I think that winning titles constitutes success.

2. According to you, F1 is supreme and Le Mans is way behind, so why do you care if Toyota was successful in Le Mans or not? So you want to say Toyota is successful in a meaningless sport, but cannot do anything in the real "pennicle" of Motorsport? Good one...

3. how old are you? Motorsports existed for 100 years. If you think results from the past 10 years are all that constitutes motorsports, then you are sadly misinformed.

The LFA is just going to be way more expensive than the GTR or probably even the 991 GT2. I think i will like the GTR the best, even if the LFA beats it's record, because GTR is buyable (within a good pricing range), whereas the LFA - i can just look at it, but can never buy it - and something that is within my reach lights up my sense of excitement more than something that i can not get. And besides The GTR is a dream machine, only if i can round up enough money for a good downpayment.

I knew it will the fastest. After throwing those test equipments away, I bet it could be even faster. Lexus basically tries to bring out street legal F1 machine with its signature reliability and luxury.

More anticipated is the green hybrid super car.
